noon onosnn AND cnncn.
Application filed March 22, 1922. Serial No. 545,751.
To all whom it'may" concern:
Be it knownthat I, PAUL C. Bronrnn, a citizen of the=United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new U and useful Improvements in Door Closers and Checks; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to improvements in door closers and-che'cks-ohe object of the invention being to so connect/the power closing means witha rotary member of'the door closing mechanism that constantly changing leverage incident to crank-and pitman connections shall be obviated and the constancy of the leverage bet-ween the power means and the rotarymember of the closing mechanism insured. i e
A further object is to connect the power closing means with a rotary member of the door closing mechanism in such manner that no dead centers at respective ends of the stroke of said power means will be encoun-J tered, and so that the uniformity of the closing power of the device from one end to the other of the stroke shall be enhanced.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of a door closer and check embodying my improvements; Figure 2 is a vicw in. section on the lines w-m and yy of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view, and Figure 4:
is a sectional view on the line 4-4L of Figure 2.
The casing of the device is represented at 1 and is provided with two cylinders 2 and 3 which may be integral with the casing 1 and with each other, The casing 1 is pro vided, approximately intermediate of the cylinders with a partition 4 having a central opening, the wall of which is threaded. for the accommodation of a bearing member 5 for a spindle 6. The bearing member 5 is formed with an annular shoulder 7 for the accommodation of one end of a sleeve or rotary member 8, the latter passing freely through an opening in the cap 1 of the S is enlarged internally for the accommoda- -t1cn of'roller bearings 9 disposed between said sleeve or rotary member and a portion of the bearing member 5. v
The spindle 6 has secured thereto an arm or lever 10 and the latter is connected by suitable connections such as indicated at 11,
with the door casing, eit being'understood that the casingl and parts carried thereby are connected with" the door.
The opposite end of the spindle 6 is provided'with a crank 12 connected, by means of a pitman 13 with a checking piston 1 1 in the cylinder A by-pass 15is provided for the passage of the liquid in the checking cylinder 3 from one side to the other of piston 14 and this by-pass is controlled by a valve 16.
The cylinder 2 (which may be termed the closing cylinder) is preferably considerably larger both in length and diameter than the cylinder 8 and at its outer end, it is provided with a removable head 2*. A member 17 is located within the cylinder 2 so as to be freely movable therein and serves as a support or'movable abutment for one end of a closing spring 18,the other end of which bears against the inner end of the cylinder. The movable abutment member 17 is flexibly connected with the rotary member 8 of the closing mechanism, by means of a chain 20, one end of which is suitably attached to said member and the other end to a lug 21 on the sleeve or rotary member 8 so that when the latter is turned in one direction, the chain will be wound thereon. Motion is imparted from the arm or lever 10 to the sleeve 8 through the medium of ratchet devices indicated at 22.
It will be seen that when the door is being opened, the sleeve or rotary member 8 will be turned in a direction to wind the chain 20 thereon and move the member 17 inwardly against the resistance of the spring 18, thus compressing the latter. When the door is permitted to move toward closing position, the spring 18, forcing the member 17 outwardly, will cause rotation of the sleeve or rotary member 8 in a direction to efi'ect the closing of the door.
With my improvements, I am enabled to overcome constantly changing leverage between the member 17 and the rotary member 8 and to avoid dead centers such as may occur in crank-and-pitman connections.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of the device without departing from the spirit of my'invention or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
' Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent, is r 1. In mechanism of the character described, the combination with a casing and a cylinder communicating therewith, of a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and pro ecting beyond the same for connection with door closing connections a member freely movable in said cylinder, a vspring in said cylinder tending normally to forcesaid member toward-the outer end of the cylinder, and a chain connected at one end with said member and at its other end to said sleeve so as to wind 011 the latter when the same is turned in one direction.
2. In mechanism of the character described, the combination of a casing, a closing cylinderand a checking cylinder communicating with the casing, of a bearing member 'secured in said casing, a sleeve or rotary member mounted on said bearing member and projecting through a part of the casing for connection with lever mechanism, a spindle passing through said bearing member and sleeve for connection at one end with said lever'mechanism, a crank at the other end of said spindle, a checking piston in the checking cylinder and connected with said crank, a member freely movable in the closing cylinder, a spring in the closing cylinder tending to force said .member toward the outer end thereof, and a chain connected at one end with said memher in the closing cylinder, and at the other end to said sleeve soas to'wind on the latter when the same is turned in one direction. In testimony whereof, I havesigned this specification in the ing witnesses. l p v I PAUL C. RICHTER. Witnesses: 9 .c I Y JJRED S; LOOKWOOD, CHAS. A. BERRY.
