BOBBIN STRIPPER.
Application filed February 27, 1922. Serial No. 589,685.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELvIN L. STONE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lawrence in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Bobbin Strippers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to looms and more particularly to filling replenishing looms having a bobbin stripping attachment.
Where looms of the filling replenishing type are provided with a. feeler or indicating mechanism to call the change prior to complete exhaustion of the filling in the shuttle. the old filling carrier or bobbin is ejected from the shuttle while it contains some filling. and before the filling carrier or bobbin can again be employed or have filling wound thereon, the small mass of yarn remaining on the ejected filling carrier must be removed.
This is now ordinarily done either by unwinding the waste filling from the bobbin or carrier or by stripping it from the bobbin in a machine independent of the loom specially devised for that purpose.
One of the purposes of the present invention'is to provide a. filling replenishing loom with a bobbin stripping mechanism to which an ejected filling carrier is delivered when the filling in the shuttle is changed. In
carrying this feature of the invention into' effect the bobbin stripping mechanism is associated with the loom and is operated by a' part of the loom to cause relative movement of the bobbin stripping mechanism and an ejected filling carrier or bobbin to strip the mass of waste yarn longitudinally from the bobbin.
The bobbin stripping mechanism 1s associated with the loom so that when a bobbin is ejected from the shuttle it will be delivered to the bobbin stripping mechanism which may preferably be made operative only on call for replenishment of filling.
The various novel features of the invention and the new combination of parts will be made clear from the following description and accompanying drawings of one good form of the invention, it being understood that changes may be made in the parts without departing from the true spirit of the invention which is definitely described in the claims.

The loom frame 1 is of the usual construction and has mounted thereon the filling replenishing mechanism which is best shown by Fig. 8, wherein the stand 2 is shown as secured to the loom frame for the support of the magazine or rotary hopper 3 in which the filled bobbins 1 are supported for transfer to the shuttle when the filling is to be changed. Extending from the stand 2 is a stud or dead shaft 5 on which is mounted the transferrer 6 normally held in its inactive position by the usual spring 7. Extending downwardly from the hub portion of the transferrer is the arm 8 to the lower end of which is pivotally mounted a lug 9 and dog 10. Extending transversely of the loom is the transverse or rock shaft 11 which, as usual in this type of loom, is rocked by the feeler or detector mechanism when the fillng is substantially exhausted on a detect-' ing beat and the filling is to be replenished.
The transverse or rock shaft 11 is connected to the dog 10 by the usual train ofniecha nism for raising or operatively positlomng the dog to be engaged by a pnter 12 on the lay 13 when filling is to be changed, but since such train of mechanism may be of any usual and well known type and the details thereof form no special part of the present invention, a more extended illustration or description thereof is unnecessary.
The lay 13 has. the usual shuttle box 14 at the replenishing side provided with an opening 15 for the discharge of the bobbin to be ejected from the usual shuttle 16 when filling is changed. These parts may be of usual construction.
The bobbin stripping mechanism is associated with the loom in position to receive from the shuttle box the ejected filling carrier when the filling is changed and is operated to strip the waste mass of yarn from the bobbin by a moving part of the loom. In the form of the invention shown the bobbin stripping mechanism is normally inactive'and is called into operation only when the filling is changed.
Securedto the loom frame are the brackets 17 and 18 which form a convenient means of supporting the bobbin stripping mechanism in front of the lay or at the front of the loom and suitable braces 19 and 20 serve to give stability to the brackets. Mounted upon the loom frame in position to receive the ejected fillin carrier as it drops from the shuttle is a iopper 21 (Fig. 1) which may be secured to the frame of the loom by a bracket 22 or other convenient means. The hopper 21 has an opening 23 into which the ejected filling carrier passes when it is ejected from the shuttle.-
In the present instance the bobbin stripping mechanism is contrived to strip the mass of waste yarn from the bob-bin in a downward direction and the ejected bob bin is delivered to the stripping mechanism end first, and for this purpose the hopper 21 has a guide or chute 24 extending downwardly towards and communicating with the bobbin strip-per. Mounted on the upper bracket 17 is a head 25 having a central passage way for chute 24 which extends downwardly beyond the head as indicated in Fig. 2. Between the head 25 and the end portion 26 of the lower bracket 18 are guide rods 27 which serve to guide the stripper in its stripping movements.
Two of these guide rods are indicated but obviously any number of such guide rods may be employed to carry intoeffect their intended purpose and may be secured to the head 25 and to the end portion 26 of the lower bracket by suit-able nuts as shown. 7

The bobbin stripper 28 has a bobbin guiding portion 35 which, when the bobbin stripper is in its upper position (Fig. 5), the bobbin guiding portion 35 will be below the lower end of the chute24, the construction being such that the bobbin 36 when delivered to the bobbin stripper will be guided in its movement into proper position for the stripping operation.
Mounted upon the guide rods 27 at their lower portions is the cross head 27 normally supported in its raised position by springs 38, and extending upwardly from the cross head is the bobbin receiver 39, the upper end portion 40 of which is formed with a seat, preferably outflaring, to receive the lower end of the bobbin 36 and hold it in position as indicated in Fig. 5 for the action of the bobbin stripper; the relation of parts is such that when a bobbin which is to be stripped of its waste yarn 41 (Fig. 5) is positioned for action of the stripper the lower end of the bobbin will rest in the seat of the bobbin receiver while theupper end of the bob-bin will extend a slight distance into the lower end of the bobbin chute 24.
The bobbin stripper has connected thereto a rack 42 the teeth of which engage the teeth 43 of a segment 44 carried by an arm 45 pivotally supported on a stud or dead shaft 46 mounted on the loom frame. as for instance by the bracket 47 (Fig. 1). Extending from the hub portion 48 of the arm 45 is an arm 49 connected by a shaft 50 with the hub portion 51 of an actuator 52, the rear end portion of Which is fan-tailed at 53. As hereinbefore indicated it is preferable that the bobbin stripping mechanism be normally out of action and be called into operation when the filling is to be changed. The
tion being such that when the rock shaft is rocked'as usual on call for replenishment of filling the actuator 52 will have itsend portion 53 placed in the path of the hunter 54 so that as the lay beats up the segment 44 will be operatedto'cause the bobbin stripper to movedownwardly, in the present instance, and by means of the bobbin stripping jaws stri the mass of waste yarn 41 from the bob in previously positioned for the stripping operation.
In order that the bobbin stripper and associate parts may be returned to their normal position after the stripping ope-ration a spring 60 normally acts upon the arm45 to return it to initial position. In the pres ent instance the spring 60 has. one end connected with a stud 61 (Fig. 1) on bracket 17 and its other endconnected with a stud 62 on the arm 45.
From the construction thus far described it will be apparent that whefi a bobbin such as 36- (Fig. 5) hasbeen delivered to bobbin stripping position and the bobbin stripper is actuatedby the loom part, the stripping jaws 31 willbe moved downwardly from the end of the chute 24' and engage the mass of waste yarn- 11 on the bobbin andwill thereupon be moved downwardly to carry the mass of wast yarn longitudinally along the bobbin. The pushing force of'the stripping jaws 31 acting through the bobbin and waste mass of filling will depress the bobbin and the bobbin receiver 39 against the action of the springs 38, with the result that the upper end of the bobbin will be moved downwardlybeyond the lower end of the chute 24, so that after the mass of waste yarn has been re moved from the bobbin, the latter will-fall from its stripping position and out of the machine.
When the bobbin stripping jaws have moved the mass of waste yarn 41 to the lower end of the bobbin, it is desirable that their grip upon the yarn or bobbin may be released so that as the bobbin receiver 39 rises under the action of the springs 38 the bobbin may be thrown from the stripper. To this end each of the bobbin stripping jaws is provided with a projection 63 (Fig. 5) which engages'a trip. 64 conveniently mounted on ;or formed as .part of the bobbin receiver 39 (Fig. 7). The construction is such. that after the waste yarn has been pushed downwardly by the bobbin stripping jaws (Fig.
7) and the bobbin stripping j .tWS have been released therefrom, the bobbin receiver 39 will be impulsively raised and throw the bobbin from the machine cleaned of the mass of wasteyarn.
It may sometimesbe desirable to insure expulsion of the stripped bobbin from the machine and to this end the present invention contemplates in some cases the use of a kicker to kick the bobbin out'of the machine. As shown the kicker 65 is pivotally mounted at 66 on the stripper 2 8 and'h'as a flexible or spring portion 67 which is thrown into the dotted line position (Fi 6) or full lin position (Fig. 2) when the bobbinstripper app-roaches its extreme str ping position. The kicker 65 has an en portion 68 which, when the stripper approaches its lowermost position engags a stub or arm 69 which may be conveniently secured to or be formed as part of the bobbin receiver 39,
the effect being that when the bobbin is stripped of the waste yarn or the waste yarn is loosely about the small end of the bobbin' the kicker 65 will kick the bobbin 'sidewise out of the machine. I
Since filling replenishment takes place when the lay is in its front position after a call for change. of filling, the bobbin being discharged from the shuttle wou d not reach the stripping mechanism until after thelatter has performed its stripping operation, therefore the present invention provides means whereby while the stripper is operating upon the bobbin previously discharged from the shuttle, the incoming discharged bobbin will be held in the hopper or chute until the bobbin stripper resumes its original or initial position.
This feature of the invention is carried into effect by a step or gate movable into stopping or chute closing osition when the stripper is in operation. s shown the stop or gate comprises the sliding plates 70 and 71 mounted in a uideway or slotextending transversely o? the bobbin chute 24 and is held normally in closed position by springs 72 (Fig. 4).- Each plate is provided with'a down turned end 73 adapted to be engaged by a cam or lug 74 carried by the upper end' portions of the bobbin stripper jaws 31, so that as the bobbin stripper moves in its stripping operation the plates 70 and 71 close the chute 24 to the passage of the last ejected filling carried and when the bobbin stripper rises from stripping a pre- ,viously delivered bobbin, the plates 70 and 71 are moved outwardly to permit the last ejectedfilling. carrier to drop downwardly end first into bobbin stripping position.
' The invention provides means of successfully stripping bobbins of waste yarn thereon as they are delivered from the shuttle and.as a loom adjustment operated by a movingpart of the 100m so that after ejec- &
tion from the shuttle the bobbins are at once ready for receiving another supply of yarn.
Claims: I 1. A bobbin cleaning attachment for looms, including, in combination, a bobbin stripper mounted upon the loom frame below the lay, a bobbin guiding chute also supported below the lay between the shuttlebox and stripper and into which the bobbins are thrown when ejected from the shuttle for delivery to the bobbin stripper, and means for relatively moving the bobbin stripper and the bobbin to be stripped in a direction longitudinally of the bobbin for stripping the mass of yarn from the bobbin.
2. A bobbin cleaning attachment for looms, including, in combination, a bobbin stripper mounted upon the loom frame below the lay, a bobbin guiding chute also supported below the lay between the shuttlebox and stripper and into which the bobbins are thrown when ejected from the shuttle for delivery to the bobbin stripper, and means for moving the bobbin stripper relative to the lay and in a direction longitudinally of the bobbin for stripping the waste yarn from the bobbin.
3. A bobbin cleaning attachment for looms, comprising, in combination, a bobbin stripper, a bobbin guiding chute mounted in fixed position and having an opening to receive a bobbin ejected fromthe shuttle when the lay is in front position, and means rendered operative on call for replenishment of filling for causing the stripper to clean the waste yarn from a bobbin delivered to the stripper prior to the last replenishing operation.
4:. A bobbin cleaning attachment for looms, comprising, in combination, a bobbin uiding chute mounted on the loom frame below the shuttle-box and constructed and arranged to receive a bobbin ejected from the shuttle and deliver'it end first, a bobbin stripper below the chute to which the bobbin is delivered end first, and means for causing the stripper to strip the waste yarn from the bobbin.
5. In a loom, the combination of filling replenishing-mechanism, a bobbin guiding chute supported in fixed position below the shuttle-box and having an opening to receive an ejected bobbin and over which the shuttle-box is moved when the lay beats up, a bobbin stripper below the bobbin guiding chute to which the ejected bobbins are delivered, and means for moving the bobbin stripper in a direction longitudinally of a bobbin to clean waste yarn therefrom.
6. In a fillin replenishing loom, the combination of the%ay and shuttle-box, a bobbin guiding chute mounted in fixed position below the path of lay movement, a bobbin stripper below the path of the lay and to which bobbins are delivered from the bob-.

In a loom, the combination of the lay, filling replenishing mechanism, a bobbin stripper which is mounted in fixed position below the shuttle-box, a bobbin guiding shute supported between the shuttle-box and the stripper for directing bobbins ejected from the shuttle-box to the stripper, and means called into operative relation on replenishment of filling for causing the stripper to strip yarn from the bobbin which was delivered to it prior to the last replenishing operation.
9. In a loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism, a bobbin'stripper, a chute mounted in fixed position below the shuttle-box for directing a bobbin end first towards the bobbin stripper when it is ejected from the shuttle, waste yarn engaging members carried by the bobbin stripper, and means rendered operative on call for replenishment of filling for causing the engaging members to move the mass of waste yarn bodily towards the end of the bobbin.
10. In a loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism, a bobbin stripper having waste yarn engaging members, a bobbin receiving hopper having a chute for directing a bobbin end first towards the bobbin stripper as it is ejected from the shuttle when the filling is changed, and means actuated by a part of the loom for causing the waste yarn engaging members to strip the yarn from the bobbin,
11. A bobbin stripper, comprising, in combination, waste yarn engaging members, means for relatively moving the waste yarn engagingmembers and the bobbin containing a mass of waste yarn in a direction longitudinally of the bobbin to strip the mass of waste yarn from the bobbin, and a kicker for throwing the cleaned bobbin out of the striper. a

A bobbin stripper, comprising, in combination, Waste yarn engaging members, means for yieldingly acting upon the engaging members to cause them to yieldingly engage the bobbin, means for relatively moving the waste yarn engaging members and the bobbin containing amass of waste yarn a bobbin, end first, from'the shuttle-box to two end supports for the bobbin that the stripper, a support on which the end of the bobbin rests when in position for the operation of the stripper, y1eld1ng means for sustaining the support to permit it to yield as the stripper moves thewaste yarn from thebobbin, and means for operating the stripper. 14. In a bobbin cleanin attachment for looms, the combination 0 a hopper below the la for receiving bobbins as they are ejecte from the shuttle, a'bobbinstripper below the lay, a chute leading from the hopper for directing bobbins discharged from the shuttle to the bobbin stripper, bobbin end engaging supports for holding the bobbin at each end ready for the action of the stripper, and means operated by movement of the lay for causin the stripper to strip the waste yarn from t e bobbln.
15. In a bobbin cleaning attachment for looms, the combination of a hopper below the lay for receiving bobbins as they are ejected from the shuttle, a bobbin stri per below the lay, a chute leading from the 'op-. per for directin bobbins dlscharged from the shuttle toft e bobbin stripper, bobbin end engaging supports for holding the bobbin at each end ready for the action of the stripper, and means operated by movement of the lay for causing the stripper to strip the waste yarn from the bobbin, and means operated by the stripper for separating Ellie e latter may be discharged.

A bobbin cleaning attachment for looms, comprising in combination, a bobbin stripper below the lay, a 'iding chute for directing a bobbin disc arge from the shuttle to the bobbin stri per, a y1eld1ng support on which one on rests when in stripping. position, means for moving the yielding support as the strlpper moves the waste yarn towards the supported end ofthe bobbin and then freeing the supof the bobbin port from said means that the yielding support may move back to initial position.
18. A bobbin. cleaning attachment. for looms, comprising in combination, a bobbin stripper below the lay, agguiding chute for directing 'a bobbin discharged from the shuttle to the bobbin stripper, a yielding support on which one end of the bobbin rests when in stripping position, means for moving the yielding support as the stripper moves the waste yarn towards the supported end of the bobbin and then freeing the support from said means that the yielding support may move back to initial position, and a kicker for kicking the bobbin from its stri ping position.
19. 'A bob in stripper, comprising yielding jaws for engaging the bobbin, a bobbin receiver for receiving the bobbin fed to the stripper, means for causing the jaws of the stripper to strip the mass of waste yarn from the bobbin, and a kicker for kicking the cleaned bobbin from the bobbin stripper.

In a loom, the combination of the lay and shuttle-box having an opening for the discharge of a bobbin, a bobbin stripper to which the ejected bobbin is delivered, and a controller for delaying the delivery of the ejected bobbin to the stripper until a bobbin previously delivered thereto has been stripped. In a loom the combination of the lay and shuttle-box having anopening for the dischar e of a bobbin, a bobbin stripper to which t 'e ejected bobbin is delivered, and a controller'for delaying the delivery of the ejected bobbin to the stripper until a bobbin previously delivered thereto has been stripped, and means actuated through the stripper ,for operating the controller.
22. A bobbin stripper comprising yielding jaws for engaging the bobbin,.a bobbin receiver for receiving the bobbin fed to the stripper, a controller for delaying the delivery of a bobbin .to the stripper until a bobbin previously delivered thereto has been stripped, means for causing the jaws of the stripper to strip the mass of waste yarn from .the bobbin, and a kicker for kicking the cleaned bobbin from the bobbin stripper.
23. In a loom, the combination of the lay having a shuttle-box with an opening for the discharge of a bobbin from the shuttle, filling replenishing mechanism, a bobbin stripper positioned below the path of lay movement, a guiding chute for directing bobbins ejected from the shuttle towards the bobbin stripper, and means' actuated by frontward movement of the lay for causing the stripper to act upon a bobbin below the lay and strip the waste yarn therefrom. 24. In a loom, the combination of the lay having a shuttle-box with an opening for the discharge of a bobbin from the shuttle, filling replenishing mechanism, a bobbin stripper positioned below the path of lay movement, a hunter movable with the lay, an actuator the end of which is placed in position to be struck by the bunter upon call for replenishment of filling, and mechanism operated by the actuator when struck by the bunter as it n'ioves with the lay for moving the stripper to strip the waste yarn from the bobbin.
25. In a bobbin cleaning attachment for looms, the combination of the lay having a shuttle-box with an opening in its bottom for the discharge of a bobbin from the shuttle, a bobbin stripper positioned below the shuttle-box and relative to which the lay moves frontward and rearward, a chute for directing bobbins to the stripper as they pass through the bottom opening in the shuttlebox, a bunter movable with the lay and a train of'mechanism actuated by-the bunter for moving the stripper to strip the waste yarn from a bobbin.

In a ,bobbin cleaning attachment for looms, the combination of the lay having a shuttle-box with an opening in its bottom for the discharge of a bobbin from the shuttle, a bobbin stripper positioned below' the shuttle-box and relative to which the lay moves frontward and rearward, a hopper supported below the. shuttle-box and having a chute for directing bobbins to the stripper as they pass through the bottom opening in the shuttle-box, a hunter movable with the lay and a train of mechanism actuated by the. hunter for moving the stripper to strip the waste yarn from a bobbin.
