Be it known that Janeen. Gowns citi- Wnsend, in the county-'Of Jefi'ersOn"and state of 'Washington, as invented certa new and useful Improvements in. Fire Kindlers, of which the following isa specification, reference being hadto the accompany ing drawings. I Y This invention relates to firef kindling means, and has for its object to -pr0vide means of this character. including all the necessary material for starting a fire.
Another object is toJprovide'lkindiling means offthis character .-;arranged in the form of a bundle, said bundle being capable of beingplaced upon theflgrate of the stove without disarranging the various inflammable materials within the bundle and without causing the material to come in'jcontact with the handsof the user.
Another object is ,atofl provide 1 kindling means of this, character, whereinpvariousr a.
strips composlngithe layer"7,but at the same sizes of kindling wood are used, said wood device'will instantly ignite when a match i is ap lied thereto. still further object of the invention is to provide a kindler of this ch'arcterineluding layers of inflammablematerial,each layer increasing in density from the bottom to the top of the bundle so that the lower layers will quickly burn, said rapidity decreasing as the more solid material is reached at the top of the bundle. I I A still further object of the invention is to provide a kindler of this'character comprising a plurality of layers of inflamma ble material, said layers being held in position and prevented from leaving the bundle by meansof a paper sheet which serves as a binder therefor, said paper sheet also preventing the hands of the user from becoming soiled when depositing the kindler with- Figure? isa sidefelevation. a,
side, of the sheet 5 and extendin longitudi nally thereof is alayerb'ofkindling wood, said woodbeing formed into relatively coarse or thick strips and disposed in 'par- Fi'gure2 is afra'gmentary side elevation and sect'ionaliview, and a I 'zen of the United States, residing at Port I I I I f Referring tolthe drawings, 5fldesignates a sheet of paper, which serves as a binderor portion of one allel relation toeach other. In the formation 'ofthefire kindler,- the 1a 'er' 6 is disposed at the bottoin'of the bun lebut when the kindler' is disposed in the stove, the layer 6 is positioned uppermost or forms the upper layer. Disposed upon the layer 6 and coinciding therewith-is a layer 7 of kindling woodQsaidwo'od being of a medium size, or
o a sizeismaller infldiam et'er or width than the wood composlng the layer 6.' In this way the space leftbetween the sticks composing the layerfi are filled by means ofthe narrow I 'terial forming'the layers;
Dispo'sed upon' the layer-7,: is was 8 (i bituminous 'matter such as asphaltum or] vegetable substance such as resin, the layer 8 coinciding with thelayer 7. This layer, of course responds very quickly to any fire applied to the kindler and thereby causes the layers 7 and 6 to readily ignite. The
After the layers have been positioned as above described, the side portions 10 of the sheet 5 are extended toward each other into engagement with the sides of the layers, longitudinally thereof. In this way, a substantial channel is formed by the sheet 5 which holds the various layers-in position, and pre vent escape of portions of said layers'when the same is subject to vibration, heat or like forces. A string 11 or like inflammable fastening means is passed'around the center or .end portions of the bundle, to firmly secure thepaper sheet in engagement with the side portions of the layers 6, 7 8 and 9 and the l bottom portion of the layer 6.
layers of the kindle'r, when the niatcl'i is ap plied, the layer S being iormcdot' material which ignitesvery rapidly, the layer will be quickly consumed and. thefire gradually increased in size, and its rapidity decreased by the density of the; layersitencounters so that when the fire reaches the layer 6, the same will be readily ignited and will burn a sufficient length oftiine' to permit the fuel deposited on the kindler to ignite fully. The paper sheet 5, of course will be consumed before the flame reaches the layer 6 so that the draught through thefuel is not, interferedwith f These kindlers may be made in any length desired, but preferably in lengths, capable of being readily applied to conventional sizes of stoves and, grates, av number of kindlers being disposed in a carton so that the user can procure a quantity at onetime, at the same tiine eliminating the necessity of providing a carton for each kindler.
From the foregoingit will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel form oi fire kindler which contains all of the ma terial necessary to rapidly and eiiiciently kindle a fire, the material While being inflammable, is of such a nature that it will not explode or cause damage, and as the layers increase in density as the flame spreads, the danger of fuel falling through the grate before the same is ignited is eliminated, as the layer 6 of co-arse kindling Wood Will support the fuel until the same is ignited. It is not necessary to use additional wood, as the material is so arranged that thefiame is not only large but is maintained a suflicient length of time to permit the fuel to re erly ignite. t i
What is claimed is t I A fire kindler comprising a bundle including asheet of paper, a layer of coarse sized kindling Wood disposed longitudinally of the intermediate portion of said sheet, a layer of medium sized kindling Wood disposed upon the coarse sized, kindling weed, a layer of asphaltum disposed upon the medium sized kindling Wood,,an'd a combined layer of fine sized kindling Wood and excelsior disposed upon said asphaltiim layer, and means for holding the side portionsof said paper sheet in engagement with each side portion of said layers, whereby the vbundle may be inverted to dispose the last mentioned layer onthe bottom' of the bundle Without disarranging the remaining layers.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflifi' my signature.
