Application filed April 30, 1920. Serial No, 377,869.
To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, WESLEY W. WATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfax, in the county of ,Atchison and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional-' Pressure-Tank and Pipe-Line Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention'relatesv to joints, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved means for operatively' connecting boiler or pipe sections together, which will permit of the quick and easily assembling and dismemberlng of the sections. 4
vide an improved air and water tight joint which is especially adapted for pressure tanks and the like whi tate the handling and settingup thereof in houses already built. A further object of the invention is to provide an improved means for operatively connecting boiler or pipe sections together embodying means for drawing and holding the sections together and means for compressing and holding a a gasket in place around the joint; A still further object of the-invention is to provide an improved means for connecting sectional pressure tanks and together of the above character durable and eflicient in use, one that is sim-' ple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonableco,
- With these and other objectsin view,v the invention consists in the novel construction arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustratedin the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in
which drawings I Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation of a 'pairof boiler or pipe sections showing .the improved mansfor connecting the same together. v 'Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal ,section through the'same,
Figure 3 is a:- fragment tion through the same. 9
Referring to the drawings, in detail,
ary transverse secg ,,wi th/the sections A and B. Another object of the invention is to pro ch will permit of tanks being made in section and thus facilipipe lines which is wherein similar reference characters designate cor-responding parts throughout the several views'A and B indicate .a pair or" pipe or tank sections and C the improved pointfor connecting the same together.
The joint C includes formed integral with, welded, bolted, or secured on the outer surface of the section C adjacent to its inner end in any preferred a collar 5 which ismanner. The collar 5 is provided with an outwardly inclined extension 6, which protrudes beyond the inner edge of the section B and annular portion 7 which extends parallel v The formation *of the collar 5 provides an inclined inner surface 8 for a purpose which will be hereinafter more ful y described.
Directl in rear of the, collar-5 are a plu-. rality v o equi-distantly circumferentially spaced angle brackets 9, which are arranged in annular formation and are either formed integral with, welded, bolted or secured on terminates in a forwardly projecting said section in any preferred. manner and the brackets extends radially beyond the collar 5 as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. The sectiomA is also provided with a plurality of equi-distantly clrcumferentially spaced brackets 10 which are arranged in direct alignment-with the brackets 9 and portions of the brackets 10 extend radially beyond the collar 5 and the ex,- tended portions of the brackets 9 and 10 are provided with bores 11 and 12 for the,
reception of tie bolts-13 which are adapted to draw the sections A and gagement with each other. The incline 7 Inner surface 8 of'the collar 5 forms means for centering the sections while the same are being "assembled and. thus facilitates the B intotight en-- correct positionliigof one within the other.
The collar 5 overlaps the section A and re ceives an annular wedge shaped gasket 14' formed of rubber or the like which is shaped to conform to the configuration of the collar 5 and is adated to seat between the collar 5 and the section-A. v A g1and'ring 15 of annular formation is "slidably mounted 'on the section A' and is of such a thickness as to f the e'xtension 7 of "the collar and the section A i f 'The gland ringfll5fl is'provided at equidistantly spaced points snugly fit between v 'with radially e Q L magma tendingslotted lugs which are in direct departing from the spirit or scope of the alignment with the anglebrackets 9 and invention; but, 7 v 10 and the slotted portions ofthe lugs are I claim: I adapted to receive the tie bolts 13., The tie 1. In a joint, a pair of sections, means for 5 bolts 13 are of the ord nary or any prebringingthe adjacent terminals of the secferred construction and have fitted on the tions in, abutting relation, a collar carried shanks thereof the jam nuts 17 and 18- by one section and extended beyond said The nuts 17 are threaded on the opposite section and surrounding the other section, 'a r ends of the tie bolts and engage respectively gasket fitted in i said collar, a sliding ring .10 the angle brackets 9 and 10. The nuts 18 carried by, the last mentioned section are -are adapted to engage the outer surface of ranged to engage in said collar and to enthe slotted lugs 16 for a purpose which, gage said gasket, an adjustable means carwill be hereinafter more fully described: ried by the means for bringing the sections In assembling the pipe or tank sections into abutting engagement .for moving the 15 the section carrying the, collar 5 is placed in collar into forcible contact with the gasket. engagement with the end of the section 2. In a joint, a pair of sections, means for which is not provided with the collar 5-and bringing the adjacent terminals of the 'secthe jam nuts 18 are' loosened on the shank tions in abutting relation, a collar carried of the tie bolts 13 so as to permit the ready by the terminal of one, section having a 29 placing of thegland ring 15 between the portion thereof extended'beyond the" seccollar 5 and the pipe sections and in engage tion, .said extended portion including an ment with the (gasket 14. The jam nuts 17 inclined wall, and an outer annular wall ar- 7.0 'are then threa ed on the shanks of. the tie ranged in concentric relation with the other bolts so as to effectively draw the sections section, the inclined wall terminating in 25 into tight engagement with each other. alignment with the mentioned terminal of After the sectlons have been drawn 111170 the first section, a wedge shaped gasket tight engagerpent ,with each other the jam slidably carried by the other section, a slid- 76 nuts 18 are t readed on the shanks of the ing ring mounted upon the last mentionedtie rods, so as to force the gland ring in besection, and adjustable means carried by the 30 tween the collar 5 and the section and thus means forbringing the adjacent terminals tightly force the gasket 1 1 between the 001- of the sebtions in abutting relation, for
