Application filed september 23, 19241. Serial No. 5023705 fo all w zom it may concern:
Be it known that' ERL E. hoGnEW, a
Citizen o t the United States. "and a resi-- dent' of Lincoln, in the county oi' Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have 'invented certain new and useful I nprovements in Fold ing Tables, of which the following is a specification. v 3
'l hisinvention relates to tolding tahles especially adapted' tor use by automobile tourists and canipers.
An important Object is toprovide' a fold:
and which is'provided With no detachable' 'parts WhlCll are likely to become lost.
A further Object is to: provide a folding table Which occupies but a small amount of space When 'Olded, and Which is use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages vention Wlll he apparent during o' the following description.
ln the accompanying drawngs:
Figure 1 is a perspective of the table.
of the in the course Figure 2 is a perspective of the same folded.
Figure 3 is a plan view 'of the same partly folded.
Figure 4: is a vertical transverse sectional view through the table set up.
Figure 5 is a perspective of a holding link eInhodied in the inventon.
In the drawing the top of the table is Composed of an intermediate section 40 and outer sections ll and 42, the Outer sections being hinged to the interinediate section as indicated at 43 so that the sections may he v 'Olded together as illustrated in Figure 2 The sections 40, 41 and 42 are provided with downwardly directed fianges Which strengthen the table top and give the same a neat appearance. The downwardly extending flanges 44: of the intermediate Secdurahle intion 40 forna a supporting means for a, pair o:t"crossrods,!l5 one of Which isgarranged at each end'ot; the intermed ate section:
Titl reference to Figu res 1 and 3. it v'l'l be observed that the cross rods'l are spaced a slight distance from the ends of; the 'intermediate section and slidably support a slee ve 46 'to Which legs 47 'are pivotallyj con nected as indicated at &8. lVhen it is de-. sired' to fold .the table' the legs 47 hich are pivotally connected as indicated at 50 may be swung into the position illustrated in Figure 7 so that the 'sarne'niayfbe swung into Contact ith the under side -o-:fthe inftermediate section 40. xVhen thus; positioned' the legs l? are ai'ranged' in 'substanti'ally parallel relation and occupy hut small amount ofspace so thatthe sections 41 and 5 .2 may be swung upon 'the' legs to conceal the same. Thelegs 'lnay be'detachably con nected by means of anpair of holding rods SL permanently pvoted at one end to one of the legs of each pair and detachahly connected to the outer leg of each'pair hy means of la pin and slot connection; course at any time desired the rods may be s vun 'inlpar all'el relation to the legs ef? tovvhich the same are permanently pivo-te'd=.
ln 'Car ;ing out the invention, the legs 47 may be hraced by means of links permanently pivoted to the legs 47 as indicated at and having their upper end portions extenoed angularly as indicated at 55 and passed through' ap'ertures in 'the doWnWardly extending 'l'langes ll. are thus connected With the outer sections &ll and 42 the sections are ei'ectivel v hraced and the legs are also hraced to some' extent.
However When it is desired to close the ta-i ble it is merely'necessary to move the upper'portions of the links 53 outwardly so that the attaching members 55 will .he disengaged 'troin the flanges 44. The links Will now he swung into parallel relation to the links 47 to Which the same are attached..
When the links lOO " Bracing links :'56 are slidably extended through sleeves 57- pivotally connected to the side fianges l l of the intermediate section as indicated at 58., 'When in the position illustrated in Figure 5 the links 56 have their angularly extended lower end portions 59 extended through fastening devices 60 carried by the lower portions of the legs 5 7. The angularly extended end portions 59 are, however, detachablv extended through the tastenmg devices 60 so that at.
I any time desired bracing'links 56. may' disengage from the fastening devices. There is suflicientfriction between the an; gularly extended end portions 59 and the 'astening devices 60 to securely hold the lower, portions of the' links in engagement With the legs.
When it is desired to fold the table as illustrated in Figure 1 it s merely necessary to disconnect the lower portions of the .b'racing 'links 56 and swing the sleeyes '57 on the pivot members 58 Whereby the links 56 are 'swung into contact With the bottom or under: side of the ntermediate section in the manner illustrated in. Figure 3. This permits the remaining portion of the table to be completely foldcd so as to occupy but a small amount of space When being transported.
When it is de'sired to open the table for use the outer sections 41 and 42 are sWung into the position illustrated in Figure 7 and the 'legs 47 are' subsequently swung on the piVot point 50 so that the sleeves 46 are moved to the ends of the Cross rod 45. The
holding rods 51are now engaged With the --doWnWardly and 'engaged With the fastenlegs to hold the same in 'their extended position and the links 53 may now be connected to the outer sections 41 and &2. Finally the' bracing links 56 are swung ing. devices 60 of the legs 47. By reason of the construction described a table, constructed in accordance With this nvention is extremely light in Weight. The table may ture of much efi'ort.
Having thus described the ,invention What is claimed i'szx 1. A toldlng table comprising a top 1nemploying 'tools or Without thefexpendi clusive of a plurality of hingedly connected sections having their edges :formed With contlnuous flanges, cross rods'connected to one or said flanges, sleeves slidably and roand a second set of sleeves pivotally 'connected to one of said fianges and' slidably recelvlng said 'braclng links. 1 3. The construction set forth ln claim' 1 andbracin rods aivoted to said le 's and having angularly directed' terminal portions secured to the flanges and Certain ofsaid sections* v v v t. The construction set forth in claim l and bracing rods pivoted to said legs and having angularly directed terminal por:
tions secured to the fianges and bracing rods ;permanently 'pivoted to Certain of said legs and having their terminal portions formed With means for engaging certain of the other' legs.
