in the county .ofAlbany and State of 'Nevv 5 York, have invented certa-in'newend useful Improvements in Safety Boiler Plugs] arid Methods of Installing :Samefof which the jfollowing is aspecification. v v
This inventionfrelates to an improved boiler plug and'method of installing saine and has as one of its principal objects to provide a plug Whi'ch ,eannot blow out,
provide.v a plug which Will project through vthe sheet of a boiler from theiinner side of said sheet and wherein means will be rovided for udjustably clempingithe plug into engagement With its seat.
A still further object of"theinvention is to provide'a plug Wherein' the 'eleniping means therefor will be yield'ably held against Working loose and vvherein" said? means will be so formed that; destruction or multilation or equipment vill be prm vented in tightening the clemping mea nsj And. the invention has its a still further ob j ect to; provide afconstruetion-wherein the plug-Will be ,anehored to the boiler sheet sothat theplug cannot become-accidentally 110st or cannot fall into the'boiler when the boiler is iuIi-dergoing repairs. o

As will be S6611 tl16"] )llll' is effectually secured to the back head so thatthelplug cannot be niislaid or lostwhile theboiler is undergoing repairs, nor can the plug tall downwardly'into' the boiler.
No'rinally securing the plug in position closing the opening 14 through the back v head is a clamping bolt 26 which, as shown in detail in Figure 5, is provided with a Tj-heacl 27. This T headis treely insertible through theslot '20 of the plug shankwhen.
by rotating the bolt a quarter turn, the head thereof willbe caused to engage within the recess 21 of the plug, Freely surrounding the bolt shank to overlie the plug shank is a resilient cupped washer 28 and threaded upo-nthe shank to coact with said washer is a nut 29. Thus, this nut may be adjusted for tightly clamping the plug within the opening 14 of the back head and binding the beveled seat 17 of the plug in engagement with the beveled seat 15 ofsaid head to provide-a closed joint therebetween. As the nut is adjusted, the washer 28 will, of
course, be sprung or flexed somewhat so that v the washer will be caused to resiliently bind against the nut therebeneath for frietionally locking the nut in adjusted position. In
this connection, attention is directed to the T fact that, has particularly shown in Figure 2, the thread upon the bolt shank stops at its inner end in spaced relation to the end face of the shank of the plug and at such point that should the nut be adjusted in-v wardly until the -washer is flexed into. en-
gagement with. the plug shank, the nut will have then reached the inner'end of the thread; Consequently, the nut cannot, then 1 be further adjusted inwardly to caus'einutilationiof the back head orplug. On the other. hand, after the nut has reached the inner end of its thread, further rotation of the :nut will 'serve only to rotate the plug or itwistthe bolt oil so that injury to the equipment will thus be effectually prevent ,60l
edf 'fiAt" its outer end the bolt shank is termed with-a reduced aperitured ear 3O 5 through which may be engaged a wire or tool for holdingthe' bolt while the washer- .28 and;nut;29 are assembled thereon.
In order that the device may be readily installed, the shank of the eye bolt 23 is, as shown in Figure 6, originally formedv with "a threaded portion 31 provided at its outer end withan' opening 32 and connected with the tapered portion ofthe shank by a reduced neck 38. A collaibr spacer 34 is provided as is also a washer 35 adapted to rest against"the collar while a nut 36 threaded to engage the, threaded portion 31 of the eye bolt shank is also employed. vIninstalling-the device the eye bolt having the chain and plug attached theret'ois' lowered within the water space of the boiler at the rear of the backhead unt-ilfthe eye bolt appears at the opening 1 1.. A. workman then seizes the eye bolt whena length of wire is engaged through the opening 32thereot and the free end of the wire directed outwardly through the eye bolt' opening in the back headij By then pulling upon the wire the shank of the eye bolt may be drawn through said opening, the bolt shank being prefer.
ably provided atits outer end with an ar- 5 row or other mark denoting the disposition of the eye at the inner-end of the bolt so that the bolt may be rotated and] the eye readily disposed vertically. The spacer is then arranged about the shank of the eye bolt and the washer positioned against said spacer when thenut 36 is applied to the threaded portion 31 of said shankv and adjusted inwardly thereon for forcibly drawing the tapered 7 portion of the eye,
bolt shank outwardly through the opening in binding engagement with the wall thereof tof form a closed between the eyebolt and the back head. The nutpwasher and spacer are: then removed when the weld 25 is formed, This done, the threaded portion (31 of the shank of the eye bolt is broken off at the neck The eye bolt will then support the plugsuspend j oint v ed 7 opposite the opening 14. through the back;
head so that the clamping bolt :26 may be readily engaged with the, plug for securing the plug in place. Inthis connectiorn'it is tobe observed that the plug:cannot, through carelessness, be secured -within theplug.
opening of the back head in such manner that blowing out of the plug will result, since the larger end of the plug; being-disposed" at the inner side'of the backfhead will-overcome this contingency. i 7
In Figure 7 of the drawings, I have illustrated slight; modification of the invention. In this figure, the back head lsf'indh cated at 37;. Formed through this;head is an opening 38 corresponding to the opening-1 14 as shownin connection withjthe preferred construction and provided atits inner end with "a beveled seat 39. Reinovahly'fitted through the opening is' a plug including an annular plug body 40' having a beveled seat:
'41 engaging" the seat 391 of; the b ack head. Rising from the inner endof the plug the preferred construction.
is a headed stud 4:2 with which is freelyengaged a chain 43 anchoring the plug as in The modified form of plug is particularly intended for use in any instance where the plug is toosinall to be cored out or recessed for receiving a clamping bolt as shown in connection with the preferred form of the invention. Instead, the plug is formed with an elongated shank 44: through which is a diametric slot and removably fitting through said slot is a wedge shaped ke 4:5. This key is secured against accidental loss bya length of chain 5L6 appropriately connected to the back head and preferably, a washer 47 is disposed between the key and the back head for spacing the key therefrom, As will be seen, the key will serve to effectually secure the plug in place and by advancing the key through the plug shank, the beveled seat 41 of the plug may be drawn into bindingengagement with the beveled seat 39 of the back head to provide a sealed joint therebetween.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed-as new is:
'1. The combination with a boiler sheet having a tapered opening thercthrough and being provided with a. second opening, of a plug closing the latter opening from the inner side of the sheet, an anchoring member having atapered shank fitting through said opening from the inner side of said sheet,
and connecting means between said member and the plug.
2. The combination with a boiler sheet having an opening therein, of a plug closing said opening from the inner side of the sheet and provided at its inner end with a stud, and means permanently anchoring the plug to the sheet and having swiveled con-' nection with said stud. i
3. The combination with a boiler sheet havingan opening therethrough, of a stationary anchoring member connected directly to the sheet and extending at the inner side thereof, a plug closing said opening from the inner side of the sheet, and flexible connecting means at the inner side of the sheet between the plug and said member.
4. The combination with a. vboiler sheet having spaced openings therethrough, of an anchoring member fitting through one of said openings and extending at the inner side of the sheet, a plug closingthe other of said openings from the inner side of the sheet, and flexible connecting means at the inner side of the sheet extending between said member and the plug.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
