Application iled August 7, 1922.` Serial No. 580,086.v
This invention relates to valve grinding;
vmachines and particularly to that class of machines adapted tovgrind poppet valves.
The primary object ofmy invention is the provision of an improved valve lerindinnj machine wherein rotary motionl of-a shaft,
driven by either a hand crank or motor,l will be transformed into a combined oscillatory and reciproca-ting` motion which will lgive a proper action to the valve on its seat during; the grinding operation.
Other and further objects will be apparent from reading the speffification. n Referring to the drawing wherein embodiments ofmy invention are illustrated,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my `improved hand` operated grinder with the side plate removed to show the workings and showing' parts in section, i
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l but showing` the parts ina different position,
Figure 3 is a view showinpV an assembly of the working parts without the casing', illustrating' the operation of the parts,`
Figure l is a. sectional view on the line lf-fl of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a' sectional viewof my electrically driven valve grinding;r machine, i
Figure 6 is another sectional view ofzmy electrically driven valve grinding machine. Referring particularly to Figures 1 to 3, 15 designates'the main'body portion or housing. Extending above and out of. line with the center of the housing is a hollow hearing 'portion 16. ln line with the bearing portion 16. but below the housing 15 is a (bearing portion 17. Within the bearing portions and extending' through the housing 15 is the main shaft 18. On the lower end ofythis shaft 18 is an enlarged portion 19`embodyiup; a tool holder.` ln a slot in the tool holder isthe tool 2O which is secured in place by the screwV 21. 1'
Arranged about the bearing portion 'l'i' adjacent the bottom, is a standard 22 having,` legs Between the standard 22,' at. .its `upper end, and the bearing portion 17 is a sleeve 24: having a flange 25 at yits bottom which overhangs thev standard 22. the standard22 and about the Vsleeve 2li is a collar 26 which with the flange 2l forms a securing` means forjthe standard 22. The standard 22 fits the sleeve 24- loosely enough to permit free relative turning between these two elements.
By means of the setvscrews 27, which are threaded in the colla-r 26, and pass through the sleeve 241:, the heightof the standard 22 relative to the'housing 15 may be regulated. These set screws 2l' impin'ge against the bearing portion 17. On the upper end of the bearing portion 16 is' adjustably mounted `a handle member 28. "This handle member has an opening of such size asto receive the bearing member 16 and is adjustably held on thelatter by means of a set screw 29 which is threaded in the handle member 28. Between the upper yend of the inside of the handle member 28 andthe upper end of the shaft 18 is a spring- 30 which normally tends to force 'the shaft' downwardly. Inv operation, the valve tool20 engages a slot in the valve 31. lBelow the valve 31 is placed, during the "grinding operation, a *spring 82 which is weaker thanthe spring '30 so that thespringi BOcanovercome the spring kwhen released to actin a manner to be described. i
Within the housing' l5, and' adjacent the shaft 18, are four cam faces 83, 38', two on each side. f Extending through the shaft adjacent the cam faces is a projecting rod 34 which is arranged, relative to the cam faces, so that when'the shaft turns, the projectingr `ends of the rod 34 will ride' upon the cani therefrom. and in position to engage and move thev ends of `thefrod 34 up along the cam- 's 38,33@ The fingers 37 are arranged in a staggered relationtothe fingers on the opposite vside ofthe shaftl8 iro-order to pre- Ab ove
