Mounted on this sha-'jt 15 is a gear 16 having integral therewith a` winding spindle 17 extent ing along the sha-ft 15. Starting at a point on the shaft 15 near the tree end of the spindle 17 is a drivespindle or drive shaft 18 rotatably mounted on the shalt 15 and having integral herewith a spiral drive gear 19. Mounted about the spindles 17 and 18 aretwo spring drums 2O and/21 each open at the end adjacent the other,` and closed at the remote end. The remote end ofthe drum 20 is provided with a sleeve 22 which encircles the winding spindle 17 and acts as a bearing by means of which the drum 20 may rotate on the spindle 17.

Continued rotation 'ot the winding shaft 31 will result in a-continued tensioning of the springs 57 and 58 in this manner until both are fully wound. The ratchet 31 prevents reverse rotation of the `winding shaft and retains the springs in tensioned condition. Then the brake is removed from the 'turntable shaft 33 the spring 58 willA cause rotation ot the drive spindle 18 and the spiral gear 19 secured thereto, and after a certain amount ot rotation o'lftlie drive vspindle 18 under the action of spring- 58, this spring will he appreciably weaker than the springv and the latter will cause a rotation ot the entire spring `loarr'el 20-21 toequalize the sion in the two springs. The speed of the turntable shaft is governed by the governor in the usual manner.
The transmission which l have ydescribed above not only conveys power from the lib narrator drive shaft to the turntable shaft in a highly elicient manner but also operates quietly and substantiallyfnoiselessly. The suspension Which I have illustrated vgreatly facilitates adjustment of the frame in the cabinet to position the Winding shaft and turntable shaft properly with regard `to the apertures in the cabinet with which they are correlated. By the construction of spring spindle which I have herein illustrated l bring the extremity of 'the spring l securing rivet into the cylindrical periphery of the spindle and thus Wind` `my spring about a true cylinder and eliminate the usual distortion of the spring and the point of high curvature resulting` from this distortion. By `removing this Vpoint of high curvature, l greatly reduce the tendency of the spring to snap off and by `providing a substantially cylindrical periphery l secure substantially even tension in the' spring and eliminate the variations in tension due to the periodic variations in diameter which result from a securing means projecting from the spring spindle.
There are uses for my motor and advantages therein other than those which have been specically pointed out and there are embodiments and modifications other than those herein illustrated. These uses,`
advantages, embodiments, and modifications are all embraced in my invention, especially as they may be included in the appended claims.

A phonograph motor comprising a spring, a governor therefor, a Winding shaft for tensioning said spring, a drive shaft arranged to be driven by said spring, a turn table shaft disposed at substantially right angles to said drive shaft, a turn table carried thereby, an intermediate shaft disposed at a substantial angle to each of said shafts., a spiral gear on said drive shaft, a spiral gear on said intermediate shaft meshing therewith, a second spiral gear on said intermediate shaft, and a spiral gear on said turn table shaft meshing with second spiral gear. l

A phonograph motor comprising a spring, Winding means for tensioning said spring, a drive shaft arranged to be driven by said spring, a turn table shaft disposed at substantially right angles to said driving` shaft, an intermediate shaft disposed at an angle of substantially l5 degrees to each of said shafts, a sliding and .rolling connection transmitting rotation from said drive shaft to said intermediate shaft, and a sliding and rolling connection transmitting rotation from sain intermediate shaft to said turn table shaft.
