FILM-HANDLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 241., 1991?.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, CHARLES FRANCIS JENKINS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Film-Handling Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The object of this invention is to provide a very compact and convenient apparatus for delivering motion picture film to film feeding devices and rewinding it as it comes from said devices.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 shows in elevation the operating devices inclosed in a metal casing having its door opened to show the interior.
Fig. 2 shows the operating devices in plan and the casing in diametrical horizontal section.
In these figures, 1 represents a metal casing of octagonal form having one of its broader sides 2 hinged at 3 and forming a. door secured in closed position by a devicel. The broad side opposite the door is-provided with a bearing 5 for a centralHreel-y shaft 6 driven by a belt pulley 7 outside the" casing and having its hub frictionally held between disks 8, 9 which rotate with the shaft 6 so that the pulley may slip when relimit fixed by the operator in adjusting, by
means of nuts 10 upon the'shaft 6, the tension of a spring 11 which reacts against the nuts while pressing the disk member 8. Upon the shaft 6, which extends into a bearing 5 on the door, are mounted side by side, but at a slight distance apart, two film reels 12, 13, the former freely rotating on the shaft and the latter splined thereto at 14; but readily sliding thereon. Between the two reels lies an arm 15 hinged to the casing to swing, parallel to the reels, into and out of the space between them and having at its free end an enlargement 16 which nearly fills the normal space between the two reel hubs and thus prevents either from interfering with the movement of the other. The arm, the inward movement of which is limited by a screw 17, is normally held in place, with its enlarged end between the reel hubs,
by means of a'spring 18 which serves also to hold the arm out of the space between the reels when it has been swung outward on its pivot 19. The film 20 from the inner reel passes around suitable uides 21, 22, 23, and thence to the film feedlng devices and after leaving the latter it returns to the box where it is wound upon the reel 13 which is rotated b the shaft 6, itself actuated by the pulley For removing and replacing the reels the door is opened, the reel 13 is slipped off the endof the shaft, the arm 15 is swung outward, and the reel 12 is also slipped off the shaft, it being adapted to pass the spline 14 or other devices engaging the outer reel. A reverse operation obviously puts both reels in place.
The reels are thus both inclosed in a metallic casing made merely a little deeper than it need be for one reel, and while one is driven and the other free both slide ofi' their support one after the other, a single intermediate movement being required to displace the arm which prevents any possible interference of one with the other.
What I claim is:
, 1. In motion picture apparatus, the combination with a laterally openable casing, of "a shaft extending into and across the interior of the casing, and an arm hinged to the casing to swing to and from the central portion of the shaft and adapted to prevent contact of two reels side by side upon the shaft. sistance to rotationof the shaftexceeds a 2. The combination with a laterally openable reel casing, of a frictionally driven shaft projecting centrally into the casing to receive reels side by side, an arm hinged to the casing to swing between the reels into and out of the path of reels sliding along the shaft and adapted, in one position, to lie between the reel hubs, and a sprin device adapted to hold the arm yielding y at either limit of its path. I
3. The combination with a laterally openable reel casing, of a rotating shaft projecting centrally into the casing toward the openable side, two reels adapted to be slipped, in succession, on and olf the free end of the shaft, an arm hinged to the easing to swing from a position outside the path of the reels to a position where it lies between the two reel hubs, and means for adjusting the distance of the inner end of the arm from the shaft.
4. The combination with a reel casing openable at one of its broader sides by .5 casing and movable at will rom aposition between the reel hubs to a position outside the path of the sliding reels, and means outside the casing for driving the shaft, said door having upon its inner face a bearing for supporting, when the door is ,oiosed, the free end of the shaft.
' In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature. 1
