This invention concerns folding and press- '10 ing 'machines such as are commonly employed in the commercial production of collars and wits and relates more particularly to improved means for imparting the proper operative movements to the folding devices.
In machines of this type, and as illustrated forexample in the'patent to Maitland et al, 713,230, November 11, 1902, the folder blades are mounted upon oppositely disposed pairs ofaligned elongated blocks, each of such blocks being actuated by means of a pair of cranks oreccentric pins. The employment of so large a number of cranks is undesirable mechanically, and in order'to reduce the numberof these, parts it has been proposed to connect adjacent ends of the blocks forming each of the bars by means of a slide member engaging aligned longitudinally extending guide slots in'the' blocks. lVhile the latter-arrangement permits of reducing the number of cranks with a corresponding simplification of the driving mechanism, it is found in practice that the long slide member, when subjected to the wide variation in temperature occurring in ma- 3 chine of this type, tends tobind .in its guide way, quickly resulting in mutual wear of the parts which necessitates: frequent replacement not only of the slide member but also of the entire bar, while the oil 1'equired to lubricate the slide member is a source of frequent damageto the material operated upon. Moreover,' the primary purpose in employing such a slide member is to maintain the two blocks comprising the bar in endwise alignment and this precludes any possibility of imparting relatively different movements to the outerand inner ends of each block, although when operating upon certain classes of work, a capability of the produce" such action is highly desirable. T he machine herein disclosed may be of a general type of that illustrated in the patent to Brown 1,053,477, February 18, 1913 and the moving parts of the same may be actuated in the manner therein disclosed or in any other suitable way. The frame of the machine is shown as comprising the legs 1, 2 and the table-like support 3. The member 3 is provided with a longitudinally extend ing recess for the reception of the bed plate l upon which the material is placed for folding. Brackets 5 are secured to the rear of the frame, and to such brackets is pivoted the arm 6 which supports the die plate 7. Cooperating with the die plate 7 are the folder blades 8, 9 such blades being carried by pairs of substantially aligned and independent folder blocks 10, 11 and 12, 13 respectively. These folder blocks rest upon the upper surface of the table 3 and are guided and held in operative position with respect thereto by means of members such as 14;, 1!, 16 respectively. As the blocks 10, 11 and 12, 13 are substantially alike and actuated in the same manner, it will be necessary to refer in detail to the parts associated. with the blocks 10, 1.1 only, it being understood that similar mechanism is employed in connection with the other blocks 12, 13,
The remote ends of the blocks 10, ll are each provided with a bracket 17, 18 respectively such brackets being furnished with suitable ournal openings for the reception 1 of cranks or eccentric pins 19, 2O respectively mounted upon the upper ends of vertical shafts 21, 22. These shafts may be actuated as set forth 1n the patent to Brown above referred. to, or in any other suitable manner.
As indicated in 1, the pins 19, 20 0ccupy the position which they assume at the beginning of the folding operation, the shafts turning during such operation in the directio indcated by the arrows of this figure. Li ith this arrangement it is evident that the remote ends of the blocks 10, 11 are constrained to move in predetermined paths of arcuate form.
The adjacent ends of the blocks 10, 11 are provided with longitudinal slots 23, 24: respectively, and within the respective slots are arranged slides 26 which may be secured in adjusted position. relatively to the blocks by means-of screws or bolts 27, 28." respectively to a plate This plate is provided with a slot 36 and may be adjustably secured to the table of the machine by means of a bolt 37. In the arrangement just described the length of the crank armof which pin 20 forms the crank is less than that of the link 32. As so constructed rotation of the shaft 22, for example, serves to move the block 11 both transversely toward the center of the machine and also longitudinally, but by reason of the difference in the lengths of the crank arm and link 32. the motion imparted to the two ends of the block will be different. Such movement is advantageous in securing the proper action of the folding blade, in wiping the edge of the material over the die plate, and in certain classes of work is necessary to produce the best results. The links 31, 32 however, are so arranged that they may readily be removed and be replaced by links of different lengths so that it is possible by interchanging such links to secure any ded variation in the movement of the block.

A plate 50 is secured to one face of the block 47 by means of a screw 51 and this plate serves for the attachement of one end of a spring 52, whose other end is connected to the rolder block 39. It being assumed that the other end of the block 39 is actuated by means of an eccentric pin or crank in the manner illus trated in Fig. l, the the block by such crankor pin will be modified by the travel of the roller 45 over the cam surface of the block 47. This cam surface may be of any desired configuration and, as it isevident that the cam block may be interchangeable with other-carnblocks having different cam surfaces, it is clear that the path of the folder block may be varied within very wide limits. It is also evident that the adjustable mounting of the block serves fur ther to increase the range of variation in movement of the folder block.
In Fig. 8 is shown a still further modification wherein the table 53 scrvesto support the folder block 54. This block is provided with a longitudinal slot 55 in which is supported a slide member 56 adjustably held in position by means of the bolt 57.
