UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE JAMES N. GILL,OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,612, dated November 18, 1873; application filed kosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain Carriage- Bow Preserver, of which the following is a specification The first object of my invention isto prevent injury to the carriage-top, when the same is let down, from the back bow striking too suddenly and solidly upon the iron forming the lower joints. The second object of my invention is to make the bow of the carriagetop stronger when the top is down by shortening the leverage from the point of support. The third object of my invention is, that when the carriage is being driven with the top down the weight of the top rests upon an elliptic spring, and prevents its receiving any injury from jolting.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the top of a carriage with my invention attached to the back bow thereof. Fig. 2 is a section of the bow with my invention attached, and showingmore plainly the method of attaching the same. A in Fig. 2 is the carriage-top bow, or a August 21, 1873.

I claim as my invention The combination of the spring and clasps B and the bow A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
