Application filed March 24-, Serial K0,. 546,340.
producing that type ofbolts which are held in place by a key driven through a slot in the same and which are commonly known'as key bolts. or I I One of the objects of this invention is to )rovide a method for'producing a bolt of" this character in which the metal is so distributed that the strength of the same is increased and the strain upon the same when tightening the key is caused to bear uponthe body of the bolt in such manner that there is no tendency to tilt or defiectthe body but instead exert a straight pull on the central part thereof and thus ensure the maximumv service for the amount of metal employed in the bolt.
Another object is to provide an improved method of manufacturing such bolts whereby the same may be produced from a solidpiece of metal more economically and expeditiously and'by the use of fewer operations and tools than have been required heretofore.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation ofakey made in accordance with my' method and showing the same connecting two plates, the latter being shown in section. Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of the bolt in connection with a key which is shown in elevation. Figure 3 is a cross section of the bolt taken on line 3-3, Fig. 2. Figure 4: is aside view of the bolt and key taken at right an les to Figs. 1 and 2.
imilar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
In its general structure, the bolt constructed in accordance with my method comprises a body or shank 10 which preferably has a cylindrical exterior and provided with a longitudinal slot 11 adapted to receive a key 12 for engaging one side of the part to which the bolt is applied, and an integral one piece head 13 arranged at the rear end of the body and adapted to engage with the opposite side of the part to which the boltis applied, A s shown in the drawings the bolt bolt is represented as coupling two metal plates 15, 16, the overlapping parts Of which are provided with registering openings 1 17,
18 which receive the body or shank'ofv'thebolt and one of said plates being engaged by the head of the bolt and the other by said key. jhe frontend'l9 of the body is preferably tapered, so as to form a drift or centering end which permits of more readily inserting; the same into the openings of the plates and aligning the latter.
front and 'rear transverse end walls. *Thefront end wall tapers rearwardly and has The slot in the body is provided at its op- I posite sides "with two. parallel longitudinal p walls 20. 20, and at its opposite end with two concave" curved faces, 21.21, "which con- I verge from the opposite sides of the body inwardly toward the center of the same and terminate atthe apex" between the same in a blunt face 22 forming a seat for thead;
toward the center of the same and terminate at the apex thereof in a. sharp edge '24 which angles to the directionfofjacent longitudinal edge of'the key 12. The
rear end wall tapersrforwardly andhas two concave curved faces 23, 2 3 which'converge from the oppositesides of the body inwardly 5 wall of the slot inthe "bolt, the'blunt seat 22 forms a-bearing for thekey which is ar ranged in the center of the boltso that the strain exertedupon the latte'rwhen tightening the key produces a pull (in thebolt whichis distributed-over the entire metal of the axis, thereby preventing the bolt from being shape which not only reduces its holding same and in a direction parallel with its eiiiciency but also renders the bolt unfitffor most effective use until the straightened. v g
Bymaking the rear end wall of the slot in the bolt of forwardly-tapering form, the strength of the bolt next to its head is masame is again terially increased, owing to the increased 1 amount of metal at this place 'which'serve's to prevent the hea h-from being pulled off under excessive strains.
Moreover, this construction of bolt is much stronger and is not liable to stretch outof I shape when in use, and owing to the head being in one piece and formed integrally with the body, leakage pastthe sam'e cannot occur when the same is used for connecting the plates of a tank or Wall intended to oonfine a liquid.
This bolt is made by first producing a circular cut lengthwise in the body from one side thereof by means of a rotary milling cutter of any suitable construction, which "taco 21 ill and Q3, 23 of the front and rear end Walls of the key slot. After the slot has been thus termed, the apex of the front taperin end Wall is removed to form the blunt seat 22 by means oi a punch or breaching tool or a .y other approved manner.
This method of making the bolt is very simple and permits of producing the same rapidly and economically without the use of expensive equipment.
A key bolt thus constructedutilizes the amount or" metal therein to better advantage, inasmuch as the same is disposed Where most needed and thus secures the maximum i ieeneo strength. Bolts of this character are particularly desirable for temporarily fitting together Work which is subsequently permanently connected by ordinary bolts or rivets, such as iron for buildings, plates for tanks and ships, and the like, in which case the key bolts can be quickly applied to and removed from the Work. Obviously, however, these bolts may be used for permanent connecting means, if desired.
I claim as my invention:
The hereindescribed method of making key bolts Which consists in first producing a circular cut lengthwise in the body of the bolt from one side of the same and then producing a similar cut therein from the opposite side thereof, so as to intersect the. first mentioned cut and thereby forming a longitudinal slot in the body which is adapted to receive a key, which cuts produce front and rear end walls for said slot which taper toward each other from opposite sides of said body, and then removing the apex of the front end Wall to form a blunt seat thereon for said key.
