Description

w. F. HILL DELIVERY CARTON FOR PAPER CUPS Feb. 20, 1923.
Original Filed May 26, 1919 4 INVENTOR I25 ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 20, 1923.
WILLOUGHBY F. HILL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, T0
PAPER UTILITIES 00., INC., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
DELIVERY CARTON FOR PAPER CUPS.
Application filed May 26, 1919, Serial No. 299,782. Renewed December 5, 1921.
To all QUIZ-0772 it may concern.
Be it known that I, IVILLQUGHBY F. HILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Delivery Cartons for Paper Cups, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a carton which can be used for storing a num ber of nested cups and particularly paper cups, and when desired, this carton may be hung on the wall or in any other convenient way, and used as a delivery device from which cups may be withdrawn one at a time. This carton makes it possible to take cups which are packed by the manufacturer in a sanitary condition and deliver them to the consumer without any handling whatsoever after they have been packed by the manufacturer. This and other objects are accomplished by my invent-ion, one embodiment of which is hereinafter more particularly set forth.
For a more particular description of my invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a small carton, embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the same, taken on the line 22 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
My improved carton 1 is provided with sides 2 and end flaps 3 and 4 of the conventional kind. One of the sides is projected upwardly to form a perforated ear 5 from which the -carton may be hung. When shipped, this ear 5 may be turned down inside the carton and annex the adjacent flap 3. At the other end of the carton from the Serial No. 520,158.
ear 5, the flaps 4 are bent inwardlyand upwardly, as shown' in Figures 2 and 3, and then outwardly and u )wardly so as to form springs. In the pre erred embodiment of my invention, these flaps 4 are extended through corresponding slots 6 in the adjacent sides 2, and the free ends are concealed in patches 7 on the exterior of the sides. These curved sides 4, which may be termed springs, support the paper cups 8, as indicated, and give sufliciently to permit the lowest cup to be withdrawn when the same is grasped and pulled.
In Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, the carton is shown as used as a dispensing apparatus. By closing the lower flap 3, it may be used as a storing device.
VVhile- I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that it is not restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures that come within the scope of the annexed claims.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a set of side walls with flaps extending therefrom, slots in said walls adjacent to said flaps, said flaps being bent upwardly and inwardly and through said slots, and means for securing said'flaps in their respective positions so that these flaps may serve as springs to support paper cups and permit the removal of said cups one at a time.
2. In a device of the class described, slotted sides with adjacent flaps which extend upwardly and inwardly and through said slots, means for securing said flaps so that the same act as springs to support cups, and a perforated ear extending from one of said sides for supporting the device when used as a dispensing apparatus.
3. 'A carton of the class described provided with sides and end flaps, two of said end flaps being turned upwardly and inwardly and then upwardly and outwardly, and provided with tongues on their ends to engage the sides of the carton.
VVILLOUGHBY F. HILL.
