M. TIBBETTS REFRIGERATING APPARATUS Filed 001;. 18, 1918 v CONDENSER CONDENSER WITNESS:
MILTON TIJBBETTS, F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR, BY MRSNE ASSIGNMENTS, T0
DELCO-LIGHT COMPANY, OF DAYTON, OHIO, CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
R/lERR/IGERATING APPARATUS. 1
Application filed Uctober 18, 1918. Serial No. 258,671.
To all whom it may concern:
lBe it known that l, MILTON TIBBETTS, a citizen: of the United States, and residing at Detroit, Wayne County, State of Michipose another unit of the apparatus which has an axial thrust so that the latter thrust will oppose the thrust 'of the first unit. Other objects and features of novelty will be apparent from the description taken in connection with the drawings in which:-
Figure 1 is a more or less diagrammatic view in plan illustrating one embodiment of the invention; and
Figure 2 is a similar diagrammatic view showing another form of the invention.
Referring to thedrawings the reference numerals and 11 indicate two compressors which take the refrigerating agent from, the expansioncoils of the apparatus and compress it discharging the same into condensers. As shown these compressors have their driving shafts 12 and 13 in alignment and the adjacent ends thereof have beveled'gears 14 and 15 secured thereto. A inotor'lfi has its shaft 17 extended at one side thereof and carries a bevel pin- 35. ion 18 which meshes with the opposed bevel gears 1A and 15. A hearing 19 may be provided adjacent the i pinion 18 and as shown an air cooled condenser 20 is disposed at one side of the compressor 10 and a similar condenser 21 is disposed at t]l[1e 11 order to effect a circulatibn of air through these condensers a fan 22 is secured to the shaft 17 and has its blades constructed and arranged to cause a movement of the air 'in the direction indicated by the arrows a.
To increase the effectiveness of this circulation the two condensers are connected by a housing 23 which has a tubular conduit 24 surrounding the shaft 17, the fan 22 being disposed at the open :end of this conduit. Y
It will be observed that the operation of the fan sets up an axial thrust of the shaft 17 in the direction indicated by the arrow 2), while the beveled pinion 18 sets up an axial thrust in the direction indicated by the arrows 0. Thus the thrust of the bevel pinion isopposed by the thrust of the fan, thereby reducing the friction which would otherwise obtain due to the end thrust and increasing the efliciency of operation of the apparatus.
In-Figure 2 an embodiment of the inventlon is shown in which the compressor drive is through wormor spiral bevel gears. As
illustrated, the compressor 25 has a worm or spiral bevel gear 26 secured to its drive shaft 27. A motor 28 has its shaft 29 extended at one side and-at the end thereof carries a bevel pinion 30 in mesh with the bevel gear 26, a bearing 31 being provided adjacent the pinion. As shown, the shaft 29 extends through the air cooled condenser-3l and also carries a fan 32 disposed in the open end of a frustoconical housing 33. This fan has its blades constructed and arranged to effect a circulation of air through the condenser in the. direction indicated by the arrows 03, thus setting up an axial thrust in the direction indicated by the arrow 6. The curvature of the teeth of the gears is such that the pinion 30 has an axial thrust in the direction indicated by the arrow It will be seen therefore that the thrust rffthe pinion is opposed by the thrust of the fan.
Although the invention has been described in connection with a refrigerating apparatus, it is to be understood that the disposition of parts disclosed may be used in other devices or apparatus and the invention contemplates changes 'and modifications which come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent'is:
1. Refrigerating apparatus including in combination, a compressor, a driving shaft, a bevel gearing connecting the shaft and compressor, a condenser, a disk fan mount ed on said shaft to effect a circulation of air through the condenser, the direction of movement of the air being such that the axial thrust of the fan, opposes the axial thrust of the gearing. Y
2. Refrigerating apparatus including in combination, a compressor, a bevel gear associated with the compressor, a bevel pinion drivingthe. gear, a condenser, and a disk fan to eflect acirculation of air through the condenser disposed to oppose the axial thrust of the pinion.
3. Refrigerating apparatus including in combination, a condenser, a compressor ,'a Wheel associated With said compressor, a drive shaft disposed at an angle to the axis of said Wheel, a second Wheel on said shaft in driving contact with the first Wheel thereby producing'an axial thrust of said shaft, and a fan to effecta circulation of air through said condenser disposed to oppose said axial thrust by its own thrust.
4. Refrigerating apparatus including in combination, compressors, a driving shaft, bevel gearing connecting the shaft and compressors comprising a bevel pinion on said driving shaft and two opposed bevel gears meshing with said pinion, a condenser, and afan to effect a circulation of air through said condenser disposed to oppose the axial thrust of the pinion by its own thrust.
5. In apparatus of the class described. in combination, a driving shaft having a bevel pinion secured thereto, two opposed bevel ears meshing with said pinion, and a fan arranged to effect a circulation of air in a direction parallel to the shaft, constructed and arranged to oppose the axial thrust of the pinion.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
MILTON TIBBEITS.
