.KEYLESS Application ined September To all to imm z'z ma@ concern 1 lie it known "that l.; llimnii C. Romein,
a citizen oi' Poland, residing` at ldliiladelphial,
the invention may he said to res-ude-` gener! shackles oi various lengths mayhe emplm .o
`in the county or Philz'idelphia and State ci? ilzennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and `useitul improvements in Keyless Padlocks, oi: which the following is a speciiication.
`This invention relates in `general 4to locks and in particularl topadlooks of the keyless type.
The principal object is to proyide an im` proved padlock structure adaptable tor all purposes where lock ot the shackle variety isemployed. i h
An additional object is to provvide a lock Astructure having` a casing with weich the andinsertible at any end oil3 the casing si t able permutationmeans being;u employed tor locking the shackle to the casing vlllith the above and other objects in View1 u allyuin` the details oit constructioncombina.-
A p Figure 3 is an end View thereof,
I' tirely through the block.y The p "are arranged in pairsgrunning t spending; edge faces oi' the block, the 'open-l. `ings oi each` pair intersecting the opening ot tion and arrangement ot parts. `will he hereinafter more fully pointed out, reference `loeing; y had Figures i and 5 sectional views oi the casing disclosing` the arrangement oi" the locking studs. u
Figure G is a plan View of a long,` arm shackle and Figure 7 is a perspective View ot the lock casing` partly in section to illustrate the arrangement ot the passageways and stud y holes.
rlhe l casing of the lock pintora-lily formed oi' a solid block, indicated at l` and provided with vertically and horizontally `disposed passageways 2 and 3, extendinpl en a gfx-ways l'Olll `('Olflti theyother pair, interiorly of the `block as in* dicated at li. stud hole 5 is drilled cross-` wise to 'the block at the point of intersection of the passageways and communicatingw i 1' iwith both passageways, as shown in lug., l.
inserted in each hole 5 is a lock stud 6 having; a shoulder or head T for abutment against one side of the block and a reduced rnnnoon.
ifi, 192e. `semi nt. lionel.1
shanltportion S fitting into` a recess formed in the inner face ot a knob `or button 9. Each studie notched on one side as at l0, in conformity with the shape of the passageway and maybe brought to align with the; wall` of either passage upon turning knob 9 in the proper direction. u h Stamped or otherwise formed upon an outside face of the block casing` l and sur-` rounding each knob is a dial face 11 suitably numbered as indicatedto advantage in Figure l of the drawing. Any indicating means such as an arrow, may he stamped or otherwise i'orined upon the front. face of each but ton for registering with any of the numbers of a surrounding dial iafce to facilitate the unlocking of `the device in conformity with the numbers of the combination.` h ln` the use of the device for ordinary locking purposes, a short arm shackle 13 can be employed and is notched along the arm as at le, the notches being spaced to correspond with the spacing of the intersecting passagen ways of the casing block. lnlligure (3 illustrated a long;` armed shackle, the arms h of whichare provide-dv with a plurality olii notches 16 arranged in `closely spaced rela-` tion and extending; practically throughout the length of the arms. This t-ype oi shackle is designed for use when the lockis employed in connection with auton'iobiles, 'for locking the steeringwheel or the brake and gear levers. lt may also `he used generally where a padlock is desired. y i
Regardless `ot whichever type of shackle is used, the arms oi the same are insertible through the passageways of the block from either or" the four edges to which the passageways extend and are designedV to be iirmly looked against movement upon proper manipulation of the locking' studs 6.
` The letters A, B, C and D on the face oit the lockindicate the` various edges or sides through which the shackle may he inserted and the ope ation o'l the device, assuming` that the shackle is to be inserted 'through edge A, the studs tl are each turned with their notched portions registerine,- with `Vertical passages' 25 as illustrated at the left of Fig; ure el, thereby making` a clear passage' for the arms oi' the shackle. Though all oi:1 the studs are in a corresponding' position with respect to the passaffeways, the arrows ot the knob pointto ditierent dial numbers in accordance with the particular number ot the combination assigned to each lock llO stud. yF or instance, the combination in the yfirst instance, reading the dial from left to right is ll, l, 8 and 6. The shackle is now inserted in the casing so that the notches la of the arm come directly opposite the lock ing studs 6 which are then turned by means of knobs 9 threaded thereon. rllhis causes an unnotc'hed portion of each stud to enter the notch of the shackle arm, preventing the l latter from moving upwardly or downwardly or in any 'm anner being disengaged from the lock casing. .To open the lock, the knobs are turned to the designated points, which bringsjthe notched portions into alignment With the shackle arms, preventing the Withdrawal of the latter. ln order to eilect a change in the combinatiomthe shackle may be inserted into the easing from the lower opposite side or edge B which Will reverse the position of the look casing, causing the -last dial operated in the previous coinbinavdial E and F and G and l-l would be correspondingly read. rlhat is to say the combination for side C reading the dial from left to right would therefore be lQwQ, 9 and l0, the inverse order oit the numbers for eX- ample, 10, 9, 2, lQforming the combination for the oppositexedge D. ln order to permit the Withdraw of the shacklev from n either edge of the lock casing, it is necessary that thev knob ber turned with the arrows pointing to the propel' numbers so that the notehedportion ot the locking studs Will beproperly aligned with the right passageways. There are thus ytwo sets of dififerentnumbers Vwhich go to make up tour dierent combinations, one for unlocking each shackle at each edge of the block.
It is believed that the advantages 'oit the 'novel arrangement of the locking studs and shackle passages Will'be readily appreciated and understood from the foregoing descriptionWhen taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. i
Having thus fully described my invention what l claim as new and desire to s-secure by Letters Patent is l. A lock comprising a lock casing haring' intersecting passageways, a shackle insertible into the easing through any end ot the passagei'ays, and means 'l'or locking ille shackle to the easing,
2. A lock comprising a lock casing haring intersecting passagcways, a shackle in` sertible into the casing through any end ol' the passageways, and rotatable means adjacent the ends oi? these passages ior holding the shackle against removal therefrom.
3. A lozk comprising a casing haring in tersecting passageways formed therethroiigh, a shackle insertible into any oi the passagen'ays, and means at the intersection oif the passageway/'s for locking the shackle against removal.
il. A lock comprising a casing haring intersecting passageways, a sl ackle insertihle into the casing through any end et the paasageways, said shackle having notched armsl to correspond with the passageways andl means the intersection oli' the passagen'ay.sy engaging the notched arms ior locking the shackle against removal.
il lock comprising a casing haring in tersecting passageways, a shackle insertible into the casing through any end olf the pas sageways, ,said shackle haring notched arms` lo correspond with the passagen'ays, and rotatable notched elements at the intersiaftion ot the passageways engaging the notched arms for locking the shackle against removal.
6. lock comprising a. casing haring intersecting passageways, a U-shaped shackle in ertible into the casing through any end of the passageways, said. shackle haring notches on the major portion ot the arms thereof to correspond with the passagewaysl when said shackle is moved to di'l'erent posim tions, and rotatable, notched studs at the inF tersection ot the passageniay.sl enga ging the notched arms for locking the .shackle against removal.
ln testimony whereof I aliix my signatur(- in presence ot two witnesses.
FRA Nl( llUZtlil. lliitnesses lilnwifi nn liloiufai ax, JOHN {laxisme/'siii'.
