Be. it known that I, HENRY Bnoonnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at London, England, haveinvented certain new, and useful Improvements n Qo n- Freed Apparatus for Delivering Parts from a Strip (for which I have filed an appl1cation in llngland April i, 1917, No. 4,888, Patent No. 1114,4763), of whichthe follow ng isa specification,
This invention relates to a coin-freed apparatus for delivering postagestamps,labels, admission tickets or the like from a strip. ei from a perforated strip ,each part, unit or element of such strip, as enlst ng between two. sequent transverse rows of perforations, constituting a stamp, label, admission ticket or thelike.

There is provided acguillo tine or equivalent to cut off each and every delivery so as to eliminate any possible pull or dragon thestrip from the outside, also provision for such an associationof partsv as shall constitute an efficient, machine which embod es the above features andother desirable characteristics. Asa further aid to convenience and economy of effort on the part of the ee afcliinb-np ratchet arrangementis embodied by which the settin for any stage in 'progress forward of therein is preserved,
and counts to the good. i In other words to conserve effort, also toallow a return of the setting device only after the final setting is arrived at, all stages in the application of energy are conserved by a step-by-step ratchet and pawl arrangement which however does not transmit drive when the mechanism operates for ejectment after final setting but is then merely without hindrance to such operation. Thus the ratchet and pawl arrangement definitely prevents the mechanism from returning to the unsetposition until a certain predetermined setting is reached and thereafter allows the operation for ejectment to take place; hence in this particular the invention is sharply distinguished from a climb-up ratchet which also forms an integral part of the drive when the mechanism operates for ej ectment and therefore cannot itself prevent the mechanism from returning to the unset positionat any stage in the winding-up or setting of the machine.

Fig. 2 shows the back of the main supportingplate as a face elevation, the facing side of the case being removed, while the coin slot or intake and the coin discharge opening or put-out are indicated partly in section and partly in dotted line aspect. Other remote parts are also indicated by dotted outline.
Fig. 3 is a side View of the feeder, the feeder guide, and other adjacent parts.
The coin on its partial entry into the slot 1, F ig, 1, bears firmly against the lower edge l of the slot and also against the pushpiece 2, made adjustable firmly, as by screws 2*, the are on the peripl' ery of the coinbetween 1 and the push-piece 2 being, for example, about one third of thecircle before the push-piece 2 begins to move.
The coin being new pressed firmly for- Warddrives the push-piece 2 before it, and so causes the main rocking bar 3 to swing inwards on its centre at 3*, this main rocking bar 3 operating the various parts requiring power or setting and also being moved against the push of the leaf-spring 4L.
As soon as the coin is forced so far into the slot that the grip between the lower edge ltand the push-piece 2 embraces the full diameter of the coin, the machine is set or wound-up, and the mechanism must be so adjusted that when the machine is fully wound up or set, the main rocking bar 3 engages by its lower extremity with the tripping release 5 which is given a bias towards the engagement position by a weighted head 5. The position of the lower end of the main rocking bar 3, when engaged with the tripping release is shown by dotted contour 3 A further aid in the setting or windingup of the machine is afforded by a special ratchet and pawl device, whereby setting effort or winding is not wasted or let back: this being illustratedby Fig. 2 which shows in elevation the back ofthe main sup porting plate. The main rocking bar 3 on the other side of the plate is here indicated in'dotted contour, and a pin 6 attached to the lower end of the bar 3, passes through anarc-like slot 8,in the plate. On the pin -6-is mounted a pawl 7, this pawl. being capable of free or easy rotation on its pin, with no biasother than that resulting from gravitation. Thus as the pawl trails up wards on the ratchet 8, it engages tooth by tooth, but as soon as the pawl 7 has passed the last tooth and hangs freely in the gap'S, engagement of the main rocking bar 3 with a tripping release 5 takes place and the aid of the ratchet 8 is no longer required. As the pawl 7 now hangs in the hollow 8 with itsback towards the grip of the ratchet, the main rockingbar can pass back to the unset position without hindrance, and as the pawl falls into the hollow S 'it resets itself by gravitation for again functioning on the ratchet 8. Resetting may be assisted by a weighted pendant 33 and a turning over of the pawl prevented by the guard pins 3 1,34
The coin falling through the coin track 9,
' breaks the engagement of the tripping release, with the main rocking bar 3, or 3", as shown by Fig. 1, and the machine operates for ejectment. I
The operation of the guillotine for cutting off each unit or part at the appropriate line, for example, the line of perforations, is illustrated by Fig.l1,f10 being the drop block which slides up and down on two pins, one of them being shown at 11, or one pin will serve, while 12 is the knife of the guillotine. The guillotine is lifted or set by'the rise of the arm 13,]which itself is lifted by the adjustable tappet 40 on the bar 3 when the main rocking bar 3 is brought to the position 3, the catches 14 and 15 mutually engaging and keeping the guillotine up till the main rocking. bar 3 returns to the non-set position and through the agency of the adjustable tappet 16 acting on the rocker 17 releases the engagement of the catches 14: and ,15. In Fig. 1, 18 to 19 shows a sequence of units on the perforated strip,'the unit at 18 having been out off by the guillotine and at the end 19 the strip terminates in a roll which is wound on the-bobbin 20.
The feeder 21 is pivotedto bar 3 by 'a pin 21, and a lifting arm 22 is pivoted to the casing by a pin 22, and operates to raise the feeder 21 when the bar 8 is moved to its full extent forwardly. The arm 22 is operated by the fall of the guillotine block 10 so that it raises a pin '23 which projects laterally from one side of the arm 22. When the bar 3 is moved rearwardly, the pinfl23 is carried beyond the end of the "arm 22, so that the front end portion of the feeder descends by gravity, and the parts assume the positions shownin F ig. 3. The feeder is prevented from rising during its forward movement by means of a stationary guide which projects over a pin 24011 the feeder 21, until the said pin passes forwardly beyond the front end of the guide, so that the feeder can be raised when the forward movement of the bar 3 is completed. 1
The coin track 9, 9, Fig. 1 includes a drop out for under sized coins. Adjacent to and on the side of the aperture 25 of the main plate 26, the back of the track is cut out as at 41 so that it just fails to allowaicoin of standard size and shape to drop through the aperture 25, andto favour the falling out of under-sized coins, the track being sloped over a little towards the aperture 25and further a light spring on the inner face of the outer wall of the track, shown in dotted contour by 27, serves to aid in side tipping the under sized coin. The under sized coin thus side tipped through the aperture is received by a chute 28, Fig.2, which chute guides the coin to an exit slot for return.

detent or trip lever adapted to engage and hold the said main lever only when thelatter hasbeen moved t oflits fully set position and adapted tobe disengaged from themain lever by the coin inserted, a strip feeder operable by the main lever for feeding the strip forward to the 'discharge opening or put-out of the machine, and means for holdand adapted to be disengaged from the main lever by the coin inserted, a strip feeder operable by the main lever for feeding the strip forward to the delivery outlet of the machine, and a step-by-step ratchet and pawl device which retains partial movements of the main lever toward its fully set position and only allows the said lever to return to its unset position and thus only allows operation of the strip feeder after the main lever has been moved to its fully set position.
3. A coin freed automatic delivery ma chine for delivering units from a strip the said machine comprising, in combination, a main lever actuated and thus set to position ready for effecting delivery of a unit by the action of inserting a coin in the machine, a detent or trip lever adapted to engage and hold the said main lever only when the latter has been moved to its fully set position and adapted to be disengaged from the main lever by the coin inserted, a strip feeder operable by the main lever for feeding the strip forward to the discharge opening or put-out of the machine, means for holding the strip feeder clear of the strip during the setting movement of the main lever, and a push piece adjustably mounted on the main lever and against which the coin is pressed for moving the main lever to its set position.

In a coin freed apparatus of the kind referred to for delivering units from a strip, a coin-receiving slot, a coin track, a setting device comprising a main rocking bar eX- tending downwards to the lower part of the mechanism, said rocking bar being forced by the entry of a coin in the receiving slot to move to setting position, a tripping device engaging the rocking bar at the end of the setting stroke, the tripping device being disengaged by the coin falling through the coin track, the rocking bar being adapted to return automatically to its normal position, a
device controlled by said rocking bar for cutting off a unit of the strip at the appropriate line, means on the rocking bar operating during the setting stroke for setting said device, means on the rocking bar operating during the return stroke'for releasing the device to perform its work, a strip feeder, and means operated by the cutting off device for raising the strip feeder into inoperative position for retrogression from the discharge opening or put-out, for the purposes described.
5. In a coin-freed apparatus of the kind referred to for delivering units from a strip, a coin-receiving slot, a coin track, a setting device comprising a main rocking bar extending downwards to the lower part of the mechanism, said rocking bar for setting the apparatus being forced by the entry of a coin in the receiving slot to move to setting position, a step by step ratchet and pawl de vice and a weighted pendant co-operating therewith and co-acting with the rocking bar in the setting of the apparatus, a tripping device engaging the rocking-bar at the end of the setting stroke, the tripping device being disengaged by the coin falling through the coin track, means for returning the rocking bar to normal position, a device for cutting off a unit of the strip at the appropriate line, means on the rocking bar operating during the setting stroke for setting said device, means on the rocking bar operating during the return stroke for releasing the device to perform its work, a strip feeder and means operated by the cutting off device for raising the strip feeder into inoperative position for retrogression from the discharge opening or put-out, for the purposes described.

In a coin-freed apparatus of the kind referred to for delivering units from a strip, a coin-receiving slot, a coin track, a setting device comprising a main rocking bar hinged at a level above the coin-receiving slot, and extending downwards to the lower part of the mechanism, said rocking bar being moved rearwardly by the said coin, a weighted tripping device, engaging the rocking bar at the end of said movement, and being disengaged therefrom by the coin falling through the coin-track, means for returning the rocking bar to normal position, a guillotine for cutting off a unit of the strip at the appropriate line, an adjustable tappet on said rocking bar, and an arm in conjunction therewith, operating during the setting stroke to raise said guillotine, a catch on the guillotine, a rocker, a catch thereon engag ing the first mentioned catch for setting the guillotine, a second adjustable tappet on the rocking bar acting on the rocker during the return stroke to release the catches, from engagement, substantially as and for the purposes described.
7. In a coin-freed apparatus of the kind referred to and as claimed in claim 6, a strip feeder, an arm operated by the fall of the guillotine, a pin on the strip-feeder engaging said arm, substantially as and for the purposes described.
