Description
E SCHILD.
ELECTRIC TROLLEY APPARATUSx Feb. 13, 1923.
FILED DEC. 31.1921,
Patented eh; 13, 1923.
para.
ERNEST SCHILD, 0F SEATTLE, WASHING'IQIJ.
ELEGTBIC TPJOLLEY APPARATUS.
Application filed December 31, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ERNEST SOHILD, a citizen of the United St-ates,'resi :ling at Seattle, in the county of King and State of ll ashington, have invented certain new and useful ln'iprovements in Electric Trolley Apparatus; and I do hereby declare theifollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others sl-rilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide an electric trolley for receiving and conducting from a fixed wire, rail or bar suspended overhead and parallel with a street or road, the necessary electric current to operate a motor for propellinga vehicle designed to be operated on the street without fixed tracks or rails for its wheels, means being also provided for returning the current to a suitable giounding object after operating the motor.
The above and other objects and Features of novelty will be more clearly described and brought out in the following specification and appended claim.
Figure l is a side elevation of part of the apparatus, the bar in section;
2 is an end view of the apparatus;
Fig. 3 is a top plan of the trolley wheels and. connections.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following description and the drawings to designate corresponding parts.
l is a base or "frame adapted to be aiiixed to the vehicle which is to be operated as a trackless streetcar. Extending from the base are standards or side plates 2, between which mounted a winding spool or drum having hearings in its ends 5. The tops of plates 2 terminate in over-turned points a to prevent any cord or wires from becoming wedged between the plates and the ends of the drum. A coil'spring 6, with one end 7 attached to the drum and the other end 8 attached to one of the supporting plates, holds the drum normally in such position that the spring is not under found on the drum is a suitably insulated cable 9, containing two wires whose ter minal points 10 and 11 are attached to the drum. The terminal 10 is part of a wire 12 which is attached to a tubular member 14 held between the two ends of a yoke 15 as by rivets 16. The free and extended tension.
Serial No. 526,324.
ends of the yoke carry pins 16" which pass slidably through the centers of oppositely positioned frame plates 17, 17. the said plates being turned or twisted at right angles at each of their ends 18, and carrying fixed spindle pins 19, on which are mounted grooved trolley or sheave wheels 20, 20. These wheels are mounted on the opposite sides of a fiat bar 21, which is the medium for carrying the electric current from any suitable source along and over the line of travel designed for the car or bus, and parallel with any street or highway to be used.
The bar 21 is held suspended in any suitable manner spaced as by lugs 22, depending from supporting member or rod 23, which is attached to suitable posts or supporting columns along the side of the street. The lugs 22 may be insulated from the bar 21, as by insulating material 2% and secured thereto as by nuts 25.
On the inner ends of pins 16 are tree moving wheels 26 which ride on top oi? bar 21 and prevent friction. thus relieving the wheels 20 from carrying the weight of the trolley. i
In the center of the drum 3 is an insul; ted core 27 hollowed out at each end to receive contact and conducting plugs 28 and 29. the latter plug being attached to wire 31 for carrying current to plug 33 which is connected to the motor. for lriving the vehicle.
In case the vehicle is mounted on such form of wheels as will permit the current to be grounded direct through the wheel contact, then no other grounding is required. but ii" rubber wheels are used then a return or ground from the motor is provided through plug 32. wire 30. plug 98 and contact point 10 of a wire [3 which av be attached to duplicate trolley supported by the same s porting rod 9. i i Q Manv minor changes in detail of descrip. tion, may he resorted to without departure f u the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A trolley device {or rouducting electric current to a moving motor comprising a yoke. bearing members pivoted to the arms of the yoke. rollers mounted on said pivots and rollers mounted on said pivoted hearing members arranged in a plane perpendicular to those of the first mentioned rollers.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
nanns'r sonnao.
