Referring to .the gures by characters oi reference 1 designates an end .member and 2 a side member. These members are disposed inlapped relation asshown at .3 where theyare bolted together and securedto the top face of thel side'member 2 is va brace 4 which entends upto and is flush with the" top of the member 1. Another brace member'l is secured tothel bottom of the end member Vland extends up to the side member 2. Thus the bracesy land 5 lap and can be fastened together as shown at 6. yConse- `quently the side `and end members will be heldrigidly at' right angles to each other.
A longitudinal slot 7 is formedv in the free end portion ofthe side, 2, the` lower. portion ofthe-slot being enlarged as indicated by'dotted lines at 8L 'Another longitudinal slot 9 is formed in the' free end portion of the en'dinember.y 1. The slotted end of the end member eX-, vtends over one end'of lan adjustab'letside member 21 and in this side member iskmounted one end of a bolt `22 the `other end of which extends through the slot `9 andisengaged by a nut 23. A longitudinaly cleat 2.4
is secured onthe member 21 and .has prongsl f 25 extending .therethrough land upwardly therefrom. i .y ,y
A longitudinal sloty 26 is .formed in the side member 21 adjacent one end wher'zev it is being a. longitudinal ,slot 27 vin said end. The
lapped by one end ofthe memberlflf, lthere lower portion of the slot 26 is enlarged as indicated by dotted lines at 23 and seated in this enlarged portion is the head 29 of a bolt 30 Which extends through the slot 27 and is engaged by anut 31. A block 32 is mounted to slide on the member 21 and is held adjustably thereto by a bolt 33 the head of which seated in the enlarged portion 28 of the slot 26 While the upper end of the bolt is engaged by a nut 34.
An opening 35 is formed in theY slot-ted end of the end member 14. A longitudinal series of openings 36 is formed in the end member 1.4' and another longitudinal series of openings 37 is formed in the member 21.
The space surrounded by the membersof the frame is adapted. to receive a platform 33 suitably constructed and provided at one end with a removable extension strip 39 and at one` side with a removable extension strip 40.
In using this device the strips 39 and 40 are removed. the bolts 15, 22, 29 and 32 are loosened and the members 14 and 2l are shifted toward thc adjacent edges of the platform. The `rug to be cleaned is then placed on the prongs 12, 13, k17 and 25, it being understood that the edges of the rug are drawn' taut during this operation.
In applying the vrug to "the prongs a tool is used such as shown in Figure 4. This tool comprises a handle 41 having a short tubev 42 projecting from 'one end thereof.' The vtube is placed against the rug directly over 35 a prong and is pressed downwardly so as to y force the rug onto the prong. Thus the rug can' be more readily appliedl than `when forced onto the prongs With the bare hands. After the rug has been placed in position a tool such as sho-Wn in Figure 3 is used rfor stretching the rug. This tool includes a lever 43 having a projecting stud 44 at one end and an arm 45 Ais pivotally connected to the lever and has a projecting' stud 46. stud 44 is placed the opening` 19 and the stud 46 is inserted into one of the openings 20. By then swinging the lever the membei 14 Will be shifted.longitudinally along the member 2 after which the bolt 15 can be tightened.. Stud 44 is then inserted into anv opening 47 in the side member 21 While stud 46 is inserted into one of a series of openings 48 in the member 1. Thus member 21. can be shifted longitudinally of the member 1 and then held by tightening the bolt 22.
' vStud 44 is then inserted into the opening 35 and the stud 46 into one of the openings after which the member 14 is shifted longitudinally along the member 21. Block 32 is adjusted against the.y member 14 and secured l by tightening the bolt 33. Thereafter the stud 46 is inserted into one of the openings 36 so that the member 21 can be shifted longitudinally along the member 14 after 65 placing stud 44 in an opening'SZ. The two The 1 Leases i members can `then be held by tightening the bolt 30. Thus the rug will be stretched tight ly and the extension members 39 and 40 can be inserted so as to practically close the spaces between the platform and the adjacent members of the frame. This platform will support the central portion of the rug.- The rug can now be thoroughly Washed or otherwise cleaned after Which the frame can be placed in an upright position with the rug remaining attached thereto. Thus the rug Will be held taut and in proper shape until it has dried.
Where small rugs are to be cleaned sev- .eral of them can be mountedr in a single frame of. the modified construction shown in Figure 5. This frame includes a side member 49 to which are iinedlyy secured end members 50. Another .side membery 51. is detachably secured to ther end members 50 by means of bolts 52. These bolts can be inserted into different openings `53 so as to hold the side member 51 at a desired distance from the member 49. Extending through the member 51 are bolts 54 .Which engage longitudinally slotted' strips 55. To one end of each of these strips is attached a cross strip 56. Extending through each of the cross strips 56 'is a holding member 57 ofstiff Wire or lthe like; terminating in an upstanding prong 58 lapping the inner side of the member 56. A similar arrangement of prongs A59 is provided along the inner side of the member v49. Rugs can be secured at their en'dsto the prongs 59 and arranged side by side, the other ends of the rugsbeing attached to the Aprongs on the respective strips 56. The said strips 56 are then drawn towards the side member y 51 after which the bolts 54 aretightened. Thus the rugs Will be held -taut Within the' frame andv Will rest upon the table or other flatV surface T on which the frame is supported. Thus the rugs can be cleaned and afterwards the `frame can be placed inan upright position to support the rugs until dry.
llVhat is claimed isz- 1. A device of the class described including a frame, means'thereon for engaging the edge portions of a rug, thereby to hold the edge portions of the engaged rug in a common plane and an expansible platform removably vsupported Within'the frame rand havin a flat rug supportingsurface in the same plane With the rug engaging means for supporting .the greater portion yof the rug in the same plane With the edge portions thereof.
2. A; device of the classdescribed including rigidly connected frame members, mem-l bers adjustably connected to'each other and to the respective rigidly connected members, said adjustable members being disposed in lappedvrelation to each other and tothe fixed members, clamping bolts extending through the lapping portions of the members, an adjustable abutment locked upon one of the adjustable members and movable against the other adjustable member, and means extending through the lapping portions of the members for holding them against relative movement` In testimony that I claim the foregoingY as my own, l. have hereto a'fixeclim'y signature in the )resence of two Witnesses.
