Be it known that l, MARYAN S. Goranninwsru, a citizen of Poland, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -`orkholding Devices, of which the following is a specifik cation. i
My invention consists in an improved work-holding device adapted for use in connection with drill presses or like machines, and more particularly to provide for quickly and conveniently presenting to the action of such machines articles requiring endwise drilling, tapping, or screw threading operations; such for instance as faucet spigots or plug valves of ordinary forms. The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and is specifi# cally defined in the subjoined claim.
Fig. 1 is a vertical cross-section, on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, of a device embodying my invention; an article to be operated on being shown in held position for end-wise action of a machine tool indicated, and other articles to be operated on transversely, being also indicated adjacent the supplemental work-engaging means illustrated.
Fig, 2 is a top plan view of the device.
10 indicates the base-portion of my device, which is suitably held upon a machine table 11 so as to bring the engaged work into alinementwith the machine tool indicated at 12, This base portion 11 is of circular form as shown, and is provided with a central post 13 having an exterior screw thread, upon which is adjnstably carried the cooperating work-engaging disc 1 4.
The base portion 10 and adjustable disc portion 14 are each formed with a series of peripheral work- engaging recess 15, 15a. These recesses are uniformly spaced from the central post axis, and are varied in form and size to receive the ends of the articles which the two portions are adapted jointly to engage any one of such recesses in the adjustable disc 14 being readily turned into vertical alinement with a determined recess in the base disc 10. and the spacing apart of the discs being variable as desired by means of the screw mounting of the disc 14 on the central post 13.
The sizes and forms of these peripheral recesses are adapted to the end sizes and forms of the articles, as A, to be engaged, so
as to satisfactorily support the latter in axial alineinent withl the machine tool 12; being so arranged as to permit of supporting the article either in the vertical position indicated, or in reversed position for operating upon the opposite end thereof.
To provide for securing the relativelyy movable disc 14 in position, after adjustment of it vertically for .properly spacing it from the base disc 10 and by rotation on the post 13 to bring the desired work-engaging' recesses into cooperative alinenient, I employ a locking device 20 upon the post 13; this being adapted, as shown, tol serve as a. simple lock nut'for holding the disc 14 in any adjusted position, but being preferably provided'with. a lock pin or pins 21, extend ing through the disc 14 and adapted to enter a hole 22 in the base disc 10 so as to insure a determined rotary setting of disc 14.
My device asdescriloed may be readily set f so as to permit any number of devices A, for which proper. recesses are provided in the cooperating' discs, being successively `placed for quick and accurate axial drilling,
tapping, or screw-threading at the ends as required. For conveniently effecting other operations sometimes, needed upon such articles, I provide supplementary work-engaging means movablynattached to the disc 14, for supporting such articles in horizontal instead. of vertical position. so as to permit of transverse drilling or' tapping thereof; the attachment 25 shown, which ispivoted at 26 so as to swing from a retracted' inoperative position into a radial position, having parallel arms 27. '28 between which isheld the end portion of an article A or A2 so as' l to permit of the guided tool 12 being used to form the transverse opening 29 ory 30 in the ends of such articles. The particular construction specifically set forth may be readily modified within the scope of the inven' tion, required additions to the base 10, or to the adjustable disc 14, for any special work, being easily provided as indicated at 35.
What I claim is t- A work hol-ding device comprising a base having a series of peripheral work receiving recesses, an integral threaded post rising from the center of the base, a disk arranged above the base and threaded on said post,
said disk having peripheral work receiving s recesses, av member threaded on said post above said disk constituting an adjustable tion` of the axis of the post and adapted to` enter the ained openings of the disk Aund base whereby tovmeintain aselected relation of the peripheral recesses f the base and 10 disk.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
