`This invention relates to pumps, and more particularly to a convertible open spout and.
closed type diaphragm' and plunger force pump.
If a contractor or builder in need of a pump first purchases a pump of the lopen type as heretofore ordinarily constructed and known as 'a lift pump, which will raise water to a height of about 25 feet., and

The de-v scribed construction permits the plunger or diaphragm and superposed clamping means to be removed without removing or changing the position of the jack, so as to throw it out of alinementfby merely removing the four bolts which hold the spout-casing or the clamping ring in place and the two bolts by which the end of the pitman rod is fastened to the crank-shaft. vAnother advantage of this construction isthat the jack y rests on inished metal surfaces, exterior to the support `:for the spout-easing or clamping 7 ring, and if removed it can only go back into plaoe in `its original position, which is not .the case with a spout casingv or clamping -v ring resting on a compressible diaphragm.

The part R1 of the coupling member R 'is formed or provided with an inclined seat fora discharge valve C1 and the free end of the part R2 is threaded for connection witha pipe coupling. The plunger P is slidably fitted within and carried by a Cylindrical member or stu'fing box S fitting snugly within the circular opening -in the top of the pumpy base and having a'laterally project-- ing portion or flange s adapted to rest upon 1,444,8z/a i y 'I the upstanding ilangeZ/1 of saidbase. Said' member S `has secured thereto a gland T, by means of fastening bolts inserted through `radially projecting apertured lugs or ears' t1 thereon and similar apertured lugs or ears s1 on saidcarrier S, for confining and compressing around said plunger suitable packing material inserted in the'space provided therefor between said plunger and the inner wall of said lplunger-carrying member so as' to provide a water tight joint. l
In Fig. 3 of the drawings is shown a dia-- phragm pump 0f the closed type taking the place of the diaphragm and associated parts of Fig. l, in connection with the pump structure shown in Fig. 2 a solid plunger U being secured to a dia hragm, the outer edge of which is clamped between the upstanding flange A1 of the pump base and a clamping ring O, while its inner'edge is clamped between the plunger and a clamping ring O1 by means 'of bolts or screws 04 inserted through holes in said clamping ring and screwed into interiorly threaded sockets in saidplunger; said bolts having nuts on their vfree ends for pressing and holding 4the clamping ring firmly down upon the diaphragm. The plunger U has secured thereto 'a pitman-rod Il which is pivotally connected at one end with the crank-shaft G. The

in separable parts o1 and 02, of semi-cylindrical form, each part being formed with diametrically lopposite overlapping end-portions with registering apertures, one arranged aboveor below the other flush with the surface thereof, asshown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, thereby permitting the two parts of the ring to be secured together by bolts O2, F ig. 6, which serve also to secure the clamping ring O to the pump body or casing. Said bolts O2 pass through holes in the-arms E of the pump base or casing A which, as shown, v'project laterally beyondl said bolts and have offset portions e provided lwith bolt holes'near their free ends to receive the fastening bolts which pass through apertured lugs on the lower ends of the legs of the jack 'for securing'the Ijack to the pump casing, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4.
