To all w from i may concer/n Be it hereby known that l., @nannies A. Fosnnne, a citizen ot the United States, and resident of Portland, in the county ot Multnomah and vState of Gregoii, have invented a new and use'tul rag Saw. oliwhich the following is a specilication.
rl"his invention relates more particularly to that class ot' inventions which are known as drag saws.
rlhe objects ot my invention are to provide an exceedingly light saw which is power driven and which is capable ot felling trees close to the ground or at some distance above the ground level. and hy a slight adjustment is capable oi" use tor Lbucking logs, or sawing," them up atter the tree is felled. A `turther object ot my invention is to so construct same that the power section may be used as a unit bv itselit. -Another object of my invention is to so distribute the weight that it will not need to be borne entirely or largely hv the slide rods.) thereby rendering it possible to make same much lighter than is usually the case.
l attain these results in the manner set forth in the followingspecification` and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring in detail to the drawings l have constructed my device on a somewhat irregular angle plate 10 on whose horizontal por tion 11 l have mounted a motor 12, preterably air cooled. This portion 11 has formed on its upper side the two bosses 13 through 1921. Serial No. 464,272.

On the main shaft ot the motor 12 is also placed a belt pulley 18 and abevel pinion 19 whose elongated hub 2O journals in the bearing 21 formed on the vertical portion 22 of the angle plate 10. y
Centered on the hub 20 is the faceplate 23 trom which projectl the standards 24 between which is mounted in suitable journals and 26 bevel gear 27 which meshes with the pinion 19. 0n the shaft 28 is' secured a c ank arm 29 whose hub is excentric with the shaft 28. An excentric strap 30 supports the near ends of the two slide rods 31 whose far ends are joined by the saw guide 32 of the usual type. On the rods 3l l have mounted a crosshead 33 which is joined by means of the connecting` rod 34 and the pin 24A to the crank 29. A web 33A joins the rod containing` portionsot the crosshead 33.
A. flat raised face 35 is also formed on the crosshead 33 and has projecting from its tace the two pins 36 arranged to `engage suitable holes in the saw 37 when its toothed edge 38 is turned in either direction.
i Between the pins 36 is placed the head 39 of the T-bolt 40, one end of which rests upon the saw 37 and extends slightly beyond the line of the pins 36. and the other end drops into a recess in theface- 35. .The bolt 40 passes through the hub 41 and is equipped with a hand nut 42 by means ot which the saw 37 may be securely clamped against the face f An arched arm 43 is hinged to lugs on the journals 25 and 26 and has riveted thereto a pair of angle irons 44 between whose swinging ends is hinged a dog 45 provided with :i point 46 and a projecting` lug 47 to facilitate the withdrawing ot the point 46 4rom the tree 48. A. wedge 49 may be slipped between the dog 45 and the angle iron. 44 after the dog has been driven home. thereby crowding the angle irons 44 against the tree.

Through the upper lug 54 I have passed a pipe 56 which rests on a clamp 57, which in turn, rests upon the plate 52 and the lug 55 at the other end. A bolt 58 is noW passed downwardly through Ithe pipe 56 and the clamp 57 and the lug 55 below Which is placed the nut 59 on the bolt`58.
It Will be evident that any pressure applied to the bolt 58 Will be transmitted through the pipe 56 and tend to clamp the members et?) and 52 together. In order to use the saw in a plane at right angles to the one just described it is only necessary to release the clamps 60 on the members 22 and 23 and swing the entire saw to the desired angle and rec-lamp same in that position.
By supporting the member-10 on a block 61 and placing the pulley 62 ovei the pinion 19 and securingsame with the bolt 63, the power section of the saw may be used independently of the savv itself.
While I have thus illustrated and described my invention it is not my intention to limit myself to this precise construction but intend that it shall cover all forms and modifications that tall fairly Within the appended claims.
lVhat I claim as new is:
l. In a vdrag saw, the combination of a supporting frame, a housing rotatably earried by said frame, a motor on said frame Who-se shaft is concentric with the axis of rotation of said housing, a bevel pinion on said motor shaft, a bevel gear in said housing meshing with said pinion, 'a shaft journaling in said housing and carrying said centric, a saw guide joining the far end of said rods, a saw carrying crosshead on said slide rods, a connecting rod joining said crank to said crosshead, a pair of dogcarrying braces hinged on said housing and .means ior locking the relation of said braces to said housing.

A drag saw having a motor, a ground engaging frame supporting said motor, a rotatable housing mounted on said frame, a bevel gear mounted in said housing, a pinion on the motor shaft engaging said gear, a crank driven by said bevel gear, an arched frame hinged to said housing, dog carrying braces joined to said arched frame, clamp means for locking said arched member to said rotatable housing, an excentric driven by said bevel gear, a slide-Way mounted at one end on said excentric, a crosshead on said slidevvay, a connecting rod joining said crosshead to said crank, and means for attaching said crosshead to a saw.
3. In a drag saw, the combination ot a rotatable housing, an arched frame hinged on said housing, a plate attached to vsaid housing, a clamping` means on said arched trame for securing same to said plate consisting of a pair of lugs, one of which forms a table against which bears said plate, la clamp resting upon said plate and upon said table, a pipe passing through the remaining lug and resting upon said clamp, a bolt passing through said lugs, pipe and clamp and a hand nut on said bolt.
