Description

Patented Feb. 6, 1923.
ARTHUR WHITCRAFT, F BUCYRUS, OHO.
DIPPER.
Application filed July 6, 1922. Serial No. 573,103.
To all whom. it may con/remi.:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR lVHrrcnArT, `a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bucyrus, Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Dippers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. l A
My present invention relates to excavating and dredging machinery, and more particularly to an improved dipper therefor.
The average dipper used in excavating and dredging machinery being built of a plurality of plates riveted together and being subjected to tremendous stresses and strains, in a very short time becomes useless because of the wear of the rivets or the lshearing oif of such rivets. Such clippers are being continuously repaired and, as it has heretofore been impossible to remove the cause of wear, that is, ets holding the elements of the dipper together, the item of upkeep' has been exceedingly high when compared with the initial cost of the dipper. By my present invention, I propose to build a dipper in which the body portion is made up of a front and a back section, each formed from castinetal, preferably cast manganese steel and with two interlocking and connecting Side plates or sections so designed as to better join the front and back together and eliminate the usual repairs heretofore necessary. In my 35 invention, when the dipper is lifted by means of a suital'ile bale or from the back or other connection attached to the body portion, the strains are distributed uniformly through the front section of the dipper. In this connection the location of the bale pin hole with relation to the rivets in the side.
lates of the body portion and the design of the side plates` themselves form an improved joint that prevents rivet shearing and, therefore, the necessity of frequent and extensive repairs. This construction prevents distortion taking place between the front and rear portions of the body such as occurs in the usual construction of such dippers, and the strains digging are distributed and absorbed by the plate.
The. principal object of my invention, therefore, is an improved clipper for excavating and dredging machiner Another object is an improved form of the strain on the r1vdue to lifting when side plate whereby a better connection between the front and back of the dipper is obtained and shearing of the rivets that hold the various parts together is irevented.
Other objects and novel eatures of the construction and arrangement of parts comprising my improved structure will appear as the description of the invention progresses.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view;
Fig. 2 is a plan View;
Fig. 3 vis a partial Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4-,4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, and
Fig.' 6 is a section on Fie. 1.
eferring to the drawings, 10 designates'v a back plate provided with a plurality of eyes 11 for attaching lifting 'devices to the front elevation or the une 6-6 0f dlpper and with a plurality of bearmg blocks.
12 in which are rotatably mounted shafts 13 to which are secured bracketslli that carry the bottom plate 15. Abutting4 against the forward edge of the back plate 10 is a'curved front plate 16 provided on each side on the portion adjacent the abutting edge, above referred to,.with a channel 17 in which tits a plate 18, this plate being securely fastened' to the front by a plurality of rivets 19 and provided at its upper end with a bale pin" hole 20, the bale pin holes 20 of the plates 18 being in alinement with `each other, yas shoWn in Fig. 2. f
Only the upper rear edge of the front plate and. the upper front edge of the rear plate ahut, as may be seen in dotted lines in Fig. 1,"adthe lower portion of vsuch edges are cut-away to form a substantially elongated rectangular'space in which fits snugly the inwardly projecting portion 21 of the side plate"22,` as shown in cross section in Fig. 4. The upper end of the side plate 22 lits snugly into a recess 23 cut in' the rear and front plates 10 and 16, respectively, as shown in Fig. 6, the front and rear plates and side platel being securely fastened together by a plurality of rivets 24. That' portion of the cut away portion 23 for the reception of the top end of the side plate 22 in the rear plate 10 forms a projecting lug on such back plate, and this lug may be of various lengths and sized according to section.
the capacity ,ot the di-` to bring a henri fl Y on the side plates. rlhe forni ot tne ro t ate in advance ot the passage or channel l? is sncll as to distribute the nieta-l to malte the strains el pull ing more unitorn'l than llas heretofore been possible throughout the body portion ot this That portion Q1, ot' the side plate 22 forms a joint between the front and bach body portions and prevents strains troni 'oeing directly applied to 'the rivets 2, and the shape of sach plate gives the interior ot' the dipper a smooth surface and nlalfes a conlplete connection lle-tween. 'the various parts olf the Vclipper body.
While I have shown and described the preferred enlbodinlel'lt of lnyl invention somewhat in detail, it is to be understood that l may vary the details olu the arl-angrelnent and construction ol parts colllprising my improved structure without departing,r ron'l the spirit o' the invention.
Having thus described illy invention, what l claim as new is:
l. In an improved dipper igor excavatingland dredging lllacllinery7 the combination of a back plate, :l ilront plate, the rear edge of the said front plate abutting against tlle front edge of the rear pla'e, a side plate associated with tlle liront and back plates and securely riveted thereto, and of said side plate extending between the, front and back plates wherebyv the rivets are freed from strain while the dipper is in use.
2. ln an illlproved dipper for exeavatingg; and drole-ingmachinery` the combination of a back plate, forwardly extendingn'lelllbers formed on raid back plate and at each side thereof, a curved 'front plate havingv rearwardly extending portions at eacll side thereof, the upper end o l tbe forwardly tending portions oi the back plate and the, rearwardly extendingv portions ot.' the 'l'rollt plate abutting and' with the lower end ot er and designed N a portionv said portions cnt away to :torni a recess. a channel l'ol'nled in the upper portion ol said forwardly and rearwardly extendingpor tions, a side plate having; its upper end formed into said channelF and the lower cen tral interior side oli' said side plate itolnied to tit in the said recess, a plurality of rivets for securin;` the side plate 'to the back and front platesA :l channel 'tol-ined ill the rearwardlj,7 extendingr portions olT the front plate, and lugs ,fitting into said last nanled channel and scoured to the front plates.
ln an inlproved dipper tor excavating' and dredging' machinery7 the b:,lnnlllination o'l" a bod)v crnnpriscd ot' bach and Jfront plates having tol-ward and rearward extendingV portione respectivelyY abutting. side plates riveted to the jlforwardly and rearA wardly extending' portions, a lug en the bach plate engaging the side plates to torni a bearingv therefor whereby a pull on the front section during the use ot the dipper is distributed tllroug'llolvlt the front plate.
l. ln an improved dipper for excavating' and dredginn,a n'lacllinery, the combination oit liront and back sections abutting' each other7 a single channel tornled in the top side ot' the iront and bach sections. and :l side plate fitting` into said channel and riv eted to the front and back sections to torni an outside lock 'nearing' for the dipper.
ln an improved dipper for excavating and dredging l'l'laclline'ry, the conlbination ol lront and back sections' abutting' at their top sides and eut away on the lower side to 'ornl afrecess, a side plate riveted to, and scouring the iront and bach sections togetller, and an inlwlrdly extending lnein'ber on tlle side plate itingY into said recessand forming' an inside look bearing; 'for the dlpper. v
.ln testimony whereof, 1 have signed nly naine to this specification.
