Be itvknown that l, CHARLES H. Mumia, Nnr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Tooth for Shovel- Dippers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Myv invention has for its objects to provide a tooth for shovel dippers having a base with a detachable wearing plate at its bottom and a detachable point at the front of the tooth'. The point has a rearward projection fitting a cavity or recess in the base, and the base has a :forward projection litting a cavity or recess in the point. The point also has a boss extending upwardly from a rearwardly extending foot, the boss being disposed in a recess in the bottom 'of the base, there being an opening in the base which extends upwardly and rearwardly from the recess in its bottom and which registers with an opening which extends through the boss so that a bolt may be disposed through the openings to secure the foot of the point to the base. The wearing plate has tenons at its sides which it in grooves at the sides of the bottom of the base, and bosses which lit in recesses in the bottom of the base, therel being openings through the bosses which register with openings in the base and through which bolts are disposed to secure the wearing plate in position. . Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification, in which the preferred orin of my invention will be described.

Fig. 4 is a sectional v,iew on the line 4-1 Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the wearing plate.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the tooth is provided with a base l0, a detachable point 11 and' a wearin plate 12, At the front of the base 10, ther is a cavity or recess 13 which extends rearwardly and downwardly, and below the recess or cavity 11, the base 10 has 'a projection 14 which is spaced from the sides of the base. This projection 14C is disposed in a recess or cavity 15 at the rear of the point 11, and. a downwardly and rearwardly extending projection 16 on the point 11 is normally disposed in the recess 13, By this construction, the base 10 obtains a lirin grip on the point 1l and there is no danger of the point 11 wearing loose 1n operation.
The point l1 has a rearwardly extending shoe 17 which is disposed under the base 10 as illustrated inFig. l in the drawings, this shoe 17 having a boss 18 which extends upwardly and rearwardly and which norinally lits in a recess 19 in the bottom of the base 10. There is an upwardly and...
rearwardly extending o ening 20 from the bottom of the shoe 17 t rough the boss 18. This opening 20 registers with an opening 21 in'the base 10, so that a bolt 22 may be disposed through the openings 20 and 21 to hold the shoe 17 in'position and prevent the projections 14 and 16 from working out of the recesses or cavitiesin which `they are normally disposed.
At the rear of the shoe 17 and at the bottom of the base 10, the wearing plate 12 is disposed, it being possible to renew the point 11 without disturbing the wearing plate, but nevertheless, when desired, the wearing plate 12 may be replaced. This wearing plate 12 has tenons 23 at its sides which connect with a transverse tenori 24 at the front of the wearing plate 12; the tenons 23 being noropenings 29 in the base 10, so that bolts 30 may be disposed through the said openings 28 and 29 to secure the wearing plate l2 to the base. These bolts 30 not only serve to secure the wearing plate 10 to the base, but they are also disposed through openings 31 at the front 32 of the shovel; the said shovel pob tion 32 being disposed in a longitudinal extending slot 33 in the base 10.
The point 1l is secured to the base 10 by ,tilting the outer end of the point 11 upwardly, so that the projection 16 may be disposed downwardly. and rearwardly in the recess 13. It is then possible to rotate the front of the point 11 ldownwardly and rear-y the point will be held by the boss. It will be seen that when the shovel is making a working or upward stroke, there is no strain on the bolt 22 and when the shovel is m'oved downwardly, the action on the bolt is a direct longitudinal pull.
l claim:
1. ln a tooth for shovel dippers, a base member having a forward surface, a point member having a rear surface, and a rearwardly extending shoe, a curved projection extending from one surface, there being a curved recess in the other surface for receiving the curved projection so that the point member may be rotated downwardly and rearwardly to lock the curved projection in the curved recess and to bring the shoe against the bottomof the base member, there being an opening in the base member extending from the bottom thereof upwardly and rearwardly, and there being an opening` in the shoe registering with the said opening in the base, and a bolt extending through the o enings.

' being an opening extending through said vboss and registering with the opening said recess extending downwardly and rearwardly into said base, a point A abutting against the forward end of said base and having a curved projection extending downwardly and rearwardly from its4 saidabutting surface, for fitting the recess in the base, a ,rearwardly extending shoe at the bottom of the point extendin along the bottom of the base, and means for securing said shoe to said base. In a tooth for shovel dippers. a base member having a curved recess in its forward end, said recess extending downwardly and rearwardly into said base, a projection extending forwardly from said base below its recess, a point member having a curved projection extending rearwardly and downwardly therefrom for disposal in the recess in the base member, the point rnembervbe'-v extending forwardly from said base below its recess, a pointanember having a curved projectlon extendlng rearwardly and downwardly therefrom for disposal in, theV recess in the base member, the point member being provided with a recess below its projection adapted to receive the projection extending forwardly from said base, a shoe extending rearwardly from the bottom of the point member and disposed under the .base member, there-being an opening extending from lthe bottom of the base member upwardly and rearwardly therethrough, therebeing an opening through the shoe registering with said opening through Ithe base member, and a bolt extending through the openings, for
the purpose specified.
7. In a tooth for shovel dippers, a base member, a point member fitting on the base member, the said members belng provided one with a curved projection and the other with a curved recess for receiving the projection, the said projection and recess extending downwardly and rearwardly, permitting rotation of the point member downrelative to the base member, a shoe exten ing rearwardly from tending forwardly therefrom for the bottom of the point member, and means for securing the shoe to the` bottom of the base member. t

In a tooth for' shovel dippers, a point having a recess in its rear surface and a projection extending rearwardly fromabove the recess, a base having a projection exdisposal in the recess in the point, and a recess above `the said projection for receiving the projection on the point, the point having a shoe at its bottom extending the base, there being an opening extending from the bottom of the base upwardly and rearwardly through the base, there being an opening through the shoe which registers with the opening in the j base, and a bolt extending through the openings.
9. In a tooth for shovel dippers, a base having a bottom with grooves at'ffits sides, there being a recess in the bottom between the sides and there being an opening through the base extending upwardly from the recess, a wearing plate disposed at the bottom of the base and having tenons disposed in the grooves, a boss onthe wearing plate disf posed in the recess, there being an opening through the boss which registers with the opening in the base, and a bolt extending through the openings.
10.' In a tooth for shovel dippers, a base having a bottomwith grooves at its sides,
there beinga recess in the bottom between the sides and there being an opening through the base extending upwardly from the recess, a wearing plate disposed at the bottom of the base andV having tenons disposed in the grooves, a boss on the wearing plate disposed in the' recess, there being an opening through the boss which registers with the opening in the base, a bolt extending through the openings, a point disposed at the front of the base' and having a shoe extending rearwardly Atherefrom under the base and disposed adjacent the wearing plate, and means to detachably secure the point to the base.
11. In a tooth for shovel clippers, a point having a concave rear surface and a curved recess 1n sald surface, a curved projection extending rearwardly and downwardly from said surface of the point, a base having a convex front end with'a curved recess therein for receiving the curved projection on the point, a curved projection extending forwardly from the base for disposal 1n the curved recess in the point, and means'for securing the bottom of the point to the bottom of the base for maintaining engagement of said projections in said recesses.
