AUTOMATIC STU? FOB TALKING IEACHIIIES.
Application filed August f ner- States, county particularly to control devices therefor, and
has for its object the provision of means associated with a talking machine oi? the Edison cylindrical type whereby upon completion of the reproduction the mechanism will be automatically stopped.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is adjustable for cylinders oi diflerent lengthsv An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture and installation, highly eflicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a talking machine of the Edison cylindrical type showin my device in position thereon,
*igure 2 is a side elevation,
Figure 3 is a detail plan view of the brake beam,
Figure 4: is a detail cross sectional view showing the connection of the brake beam with the cut-off lever of the machine,
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view showing the movable stop member mounted upon the brake member,
Figure 6 is adetail cross sectional view through the adjustably mounted stop member showing the latch means thereon,
Figure 7 is an edge view thereof and Figure 8 is a detail view of the yoke carrying bar.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, the letter A designates the top of a talking machine of the Edison type using a cylindrical record B which is rotated by means of gearing indicated at C and driven by the usual motor construction which is not shown as forming no part of the pres Serial No. lo 5W9.
ent invention. talking machine of this type iurther iiuciudes a guide rod D upon which is slidable a carriage E carrying the reproducer F. The letter designates the lever used for starting or stopping the mechanism for rotatingthe cylinder. The terminal of this lever G is upturned to provide a handle portion H extending through a slot 1 in the top A. 6
in carrying out my invention 1 provide a bar 10 which is disposed below the top beneath the guide rod D. At one end 1 bar is constricted or narrowed, as shown 11, and this end portion carries a U- "haped yoke 12 embracing and secured to the ever G adjacent the handle portion H hereof. The other end. of the bar 10 has lidably disposed thereon a stop member 13 1 In r se" a a the passage of the bar 10 and which is provided with a second opening 15 slidable upon the guide rod D and the upper end of this stop member projects into the path of travel oi the carriage E.
. In order that the stop 13 may be secured upon the bar 10 in adjusted positions, I provide a pivoted latch 16 located within a recess 17 in one side of the stop 13 and having one end projecting outwardly beyond the edge of the stop and having a finger'engaging head 18. The other end of this latch terminates in a tooth 19 engageable with any one of a plurality of notches 20 formed in one side or" the bar 10. The latch 16 is engaged by a leaf-spring 21 whereby the tooth will be urged normally into engagement with the notches.
When my device is installed it will be readily apparent that a slot 22 must be provided in the top A so that the stop 13 may project therethrough.
The operation of the device is as follows: i The operator presses upon the button 18 to release the latch 16 from engagement with the notches 20 and this adjusts the position of the stop 13 along the bar 10 so that it will be engaged by the carriage E when the reproducer F reaches the end of the' record. Additional movement of the carriage after it engages the stop will cause the bar 10 to be moved longitudinally which will result in throwing the lever G into its position for stopping the mechanism rotat- 110 ing the cylinder. Owing to the provision of the plurality of notches 20 it will be which is provided with an opening 14 for 7 seen that the stop may he adjusted in such position as to stop the rotation of the record regardless of the length of the record.
While l have shown and described the preferred e nhodiment of my invention, it iS oi course to he understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement oi parts as Will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope oi. the suhjoined claims.
Having thus: descrihed my invention, l claim:
1. In combination with the control lever for the record echanismoif a cylinder record tyne talkin iachine including a guide rod ed a cant go slidahle thereon and w rying a reproducer; an automatic stop de ce comprising a bar located heneath said guide rod and connected at one end with said control lever, and a stop slidable upon. said bar and disposable at selected positions thereon, said stop projecting in the path of travel of said carriage.
2. In combination with. the control lever for the record rotating mechanism of acylinder record type talking machine including a guide rod and a carriage slidable thereon and carrying a reproducer, an automatic stop device comprising a bar disposable heloiv in spaced parallel relation to guide rod, said bar heing connected at one end With. said control lever, a stop member slidahly mounted on said bar and on said guide rod and projecting into the path of travel oi. said carriage, and means for securing said. stop at adjusted positions upon said bar.
3. In combination with the control lever for the record rotating mechanism of a cylinder record type talking machine including a guioe rod and carriage slidahle thereon and carrying a reproducer; a stop dcri comprising bar disposed below and 4 52(! parallel relation to said guide rod,
bar being; connected at one end with con rot lever and having its other end formed with a plurality of notches, a stop slidahl engaged upon said bar and said rod, and a spring-pressed latch member carried by said stop and engageahle selectively Within said notches, said stop member projecting into the path of movement of said carriage.
In testimony whereof I affix my turc.
l/VILLIAM C. KAUFMAN.
