Original application ied August 16, 3.921, Serial No. 492,741. Divided and this application :tiled November 15, 1922.
T 0` @ZZ whom 'it may concern Be it known that i., "Wintmir A. Sonninonnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of lhio, have invented a new and useful improvement in Processes of Making Swivels, of which the foilowing is full, clear, and enact description.
The present invention relates broadly toswivels of general utility and to a process o-f making the e, and more particularly to a swivel construction comprising members having an efficient bearing therebetween and of such shape that the manufacture thereof is facilitated.
At the present time, it isquite general practice to form swivels of different constructions and adaptedv for different purposes by casting one of the swivel members around the other, using one ofthe members as a core for the casting.v rlihis practice in many instances results in fusion of the metal at the joint thereby rigidly connecting the membersV and rendering the product useless as a swivel. g
it is also old to construct articles of this nature by first forming separate members adapted to be interfitted to produce the completed swivel. The process of making such articles has, however, usually required a heating, forgingand/or welding operation which is objectionable.l Articles made by this method have also ordinarily had inter-l tting grooves and shoulders requiring specialtools for their formation and increasing the fric-tion surface between the members. y y
I am also aware that swivels have been constructed by inserting a portion of the member within the barrel of the female member and then striking inportions of the barrel to hold the members in assembled position. Also, f am awa-re that swivels have been formed by providing an eye inem-- ber having ears thereon which are turned down toward each other about the body of the male member.
The foregoing methods have involved either the application of heat or the requirement of specially formed tools rendering.
the entire process expensive and providing an article not possessing all of the desirable characteristics of strength, ease of rotation of the parts, and uniformity of product.
By the present invention there is provided Serial No. 601,075.
an improved method and article insuring uniformity of product having the required strength, and capable of being inexpensively manufactured. The construction is Isuch that the operation of the swivel does not pro duce any objectionable binding tendencies and the use of heat in the assembly of the parts is obviated. i
In the accompanying drawings there is shown, for purposes of illustration only, a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it being understood that the drawings do not define. the limits of this invention and that changes may `be made in the construction and operation disclosed therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my broader claims.`
in the drawings,
Figure l is a. side elevation, partly in section and partly broken away, illustrating` the two swivel members before assembling;
2 vis asimilar view illustrating the members assembled relation ready for the pressing operation, and
3 is a view, similar to Fig. 2, showing a portion of a completed swivel.
The present application is a division of my application Serial No. 92541, filed August 16, 1921.
ln accordance with the present invention, a swivel embodying the desired characteristics may be formed by providing a female member 2, having formed therein an opening 3 of substantially uniform diameter throughout its entire length. The member 2 is also formed with a circumferentiallyextending groove et, adapted to receive, retain and guide a suitable forming tool which may comprise dies A. and B. The member 2 may have, secured thereto or extending therefrom suitable means enabling the swivel to be operativeiy connected to the parts with which it is to be used.
(lo-operating with the member 2 a second member having formed thereon an enlarged head (i provided with a tapered or curved outer bearing surface T forming a bearing portion of reduced diameter. in Figure i the respective swivel members are illustrated before assembling. it will be apn parent that by reason of the construction of the respective members, they may be easily produced by casting as the the surfaces adapted for intertting engagement are free from flanges or grooves of angular cross section.
In Fig. 2, `the respective members are illustrated in assembled relationship. F or closing the member 2 about the bearing surface 7, there may be provided dies A and B having their operative faces shaped to engage and substantially conform to the external contour of the member 2. It will be apparent that by reason of the provision of the groove 4, and the corresponding bead or shoulder 8, the dies are positively received, retained and guided as they are moved inwardly, .thereby enabling the member 2 to be accurately vcompressed around the head 6 and bearing surface 7 to provide a swivel connection operating with a minimum of friction. Unless the groove 4- is provided, as described, it has been found impossible to control the tools and press them in the comparatively large body ot' the casting in such manner as to form a satisfactory joint between the two members.
The reduced beveledportion of the head 6 positively prevents the members from being pulled apart. After'the parts `are assembled in the manner set forth, and as clearly indicated in Fig. 3, the bearing sur-y face 7 permits easy rotation of 'one or the members with respect to the other and the swivel is therefore adapted to take the place of similar articles as heretofore constructed.
controlling means, providing a second mem'-l ber having a head thereon, placing the said head within said opening, and then partially closing the opening to cause the wallsthereof to engage said head by utilizing said means to receive, retain and guide a forming tool, substantially as described.
2. The method of making swivels, comprising providing' a member having an opening therethrough and `formed with a circumferentially extending tool Controlling groove around said opening, providing a second member having a head thereon, placing said head within said opening and then pary tion within said opening, and then partially closing said opening to cause the walls thereof to engage said portion by utilizing said groove to receive, retain and guide a forming tool, substantially as described.
4.-. The method oi makingswivels, comprising providing a member having an opening therethrough and Yformed with a circumferentially extending tool controlling groove forming a shoulder on one end of said member, providing a second member having a head thereon, with a reduced bearing portion, placing said head within said opening, and then partially closing said opening by engaging said groove with suitable tools to cause the walls of said opening to engage the reduced portion on the second member, substantiallyas described.
5. The method of making swivels, comprising providing a member having an opening therethrough of substantially uniform diameter throughout its length and having an externalcircumferentially extending tool controlling groove, providing a second member having' ahead thereon with a reduced bearing portion, placing said head within said opening, and then partially closing said opening by engaging said groove with suitable tools to cause the walls oi said opening to engage the reduced portion on thev second member, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand. o
ITILLIAM A. SCHLEICHER.
