ENVELOPE.
`Application led February l14, `1921. Serial No. 444,887.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, (lor-1N L. DroniNsoN, a citizen of the United States of America., residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of lvlichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes, of which the following is a specification, reference being` had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to double pocket envelopes wherein means areprovided for holding merchandise, correspondence or theV like, in separate compartments, and to an arrangement thereof whereby a single flap seals both compartments in such relation to each other as to close a lill-opening that is common to both compartments when the envelope is open.
rllhe invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
ln the drawings:
Fig. l is a plan view of a blank that when folded, produces an envelope that is an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the blank folded, ready for filling.
Fig. 3 is a view in perspective showing the envelope sealed.
As herein shown in preferred form, a substantially rectangular blank has a transverse folding line 2, with a pair of oppositely disposed side iaps 3 on one side of the folding line, that, when inturned upon the body 0f the sheet, overlap and may be pasted together, together with an end flap 4 that may be secured over the enfolded side flaps, either by pasting or by a string fastening means indicated at 5 on the end flap, and at 6 on the outer side Hap.
On the other side of the transverse fold line 2, there are a pair of oppositely disposed side flaps 7, which when inturned against the body of the blank overlap and are pasted together, while an end flap 8 is provided, that overlies and is pasted upon the superposed side flaps 7. The proximate edges 9 and l0 of the side flaps 3 and 7 arecut away, so as to form a fill-opening indicated at l1 in Fig. 2, which is common to Vlooth compartments.`
The end fold 8 is gummed on the outer face as at l2, so that when the envelope is closed by folding on the line 2, the end flaps l5 seals upon the side flap 3. Thus one pocket forms a closure for the other, or the `rectangular sheet having a ling line, a pair of overlappingI side flaps on common lillopening ll is closed, when the envelope is completely sealed.
y this arrangement of parts a double envelope is obtained which provides for the retention under seal of 'the contents of two pockets, one of which, however, being arranged to be opened through an end fold, it' desired, without disturbing the matter in the first compartment which is still sealed.
that l claim as my invention is:
l. in envelope comprising a substantially rectangular shee having a transverse folding line, a. pair of side flaps on one lside of said transverse folding line, inturned in overlapping relation, a corresponding end iiap arranged to overlie and be "secured to the side flaps when the latter superposed, a second pair of side flaps on the other side of the transverse folding` line inturned and secured in overlapped relation, and an end fla-p inturned and sealed over the lat-ter side flaps and gumnied on its outer face for attachment `to the first side flaps when the blank is .folded on the transverse line.
2. An envelope comprising a one piece blank with a, transverse folding line between the ends thereof, the margins of the blank being severed at the foldingl line and inturned into overlapping relation and secured by outer end flaps, one of which is gumnied on both sides to engage first the adjacent side flaps when the envelope is extended, and then the other flaps when the envelope is folded on the transverse line.
3. An envelope comprising a substantially transverse foldone side of said transverse folding' line, an end flap overlapping' said side flaps, a second pair of overlapping side iiaps on the other side of the transverse folding' line, the proXimate. edges of the side flaps aforesaid being cut away to provide a lill-opening, and an end flap overlapping the second pair of side flaps and secured thereto, the last mentioned end Hap hen/ing means adapted .for engagement with the first pair of side flaps to close said lill-opening when the'blank is folded on the transverse line.
d. r'tn envelope Comprising a substantially rectangular sheet having a transverse folding line, a plurality of spaced overlapping side flaps upon opposite sides of said transverse folding line, the side flaps upon one side of said transverse folding line having` a greater 'length .than the side 'flaps upon the opposite side of said transverse folding' line, the proximate edges o-i said side laps lieing; eut awa-y to provide a fill-openingj an end flap seeured to the yeide ila-ps upon one side of said transverse folding line, a. second end flap seein-ed to the side flaps upon the opposite side orf said transverse folding;- line, Vthe second end 'flap beingl provided with means `or attachment to the side iaps upon the opposite sides of said transverse folding line to close the lfill-opening` when the blank is folded on the transverse line.
'iintenvelope comprising a sheet having' a, trans-verse 'folding' line, a plurality soif spaced overlaiping side iaps upon opposii'e sides or' said transverse 'folding line,v the profginiate edges of said-flaps being' ont away io provide a lill-opening7 an end flap secured to the sid 'apf-s upon one side of said transverse lfolding' line, a second end i'lap secured to the side flaps upon the opposite side ol' said transverse folding line, the second end liap being; provided with inearns for attachnient to lthe side flap-s upon the opposite side of said 'transverse folding line to close the {ill-opening when the sheer` is folded on the transverse line. a
.f-rn envelope Comprising axsheet having a transverse folding line7 a plurality ofi spaced mier-lapping side flaps upon opposite sides of said transverse folding line, an end secured to che side flaps upon one side or said transverse 'folding line to provide. a pocker., a. second endlap secured 4to the side flaps upon 'the opposlte side of said Leransverse 'folding line tofprovide a second pocket, said sheet being provided with a lill-opening at seid transverse foldingline between sai-d poelels, rheseeond end flap being' provided with Ineens l'or atfr'aehrnent to the side laps upon `the opposite side of said iransverse lnlliling line to close the lill-openin when the sheer` is liolded on the transverse line.
fin testimony whereof l aflix iny signature.
