The sectionalizing of the contact member 25 is conveniently accomplished as shown in Fig. 6 by supporting individually the annular sections 26 in a flexible manner on the shaft 27. This flexibility is readily effected by resiliently supporting the sections on the offset portion of the shaft 27, where a sleeve able, markings placed on the cap plate 34.-

In the modified form of the tap changing dcvice shown in Ifig. :fflexibility for the contact member 25 is provided by making it of a helical spiral spring, as shown at36, the ends having a conical form as shown at 37, in order to secure a centering effect, when .mountcd on the offset portion of the shaft 27. In other respects this modified'form of device is shown like that in Figs. 3 and 4:.
In operation, to change the voltage ratio of the transformer shown the knob 28 is turned to move the member 25 from bridging one pair of contacts 18 to any other detions of winding P are in service, or to one of the other three positions where an intermediate number of sections are 1n service.
While I have here shown an embodlment of my invention which isat present the best means known to me for carrying the same into eti'ect, I would have it understood that i this is merely illustrative and that I do not mean to be limited thereby to the precise details here disclosed since obvious alterations thereof will appear to those skilled in this art, nor in the choice of recognized equivalents except as defined in my claims hereunto annexed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A tap changing device comprising a supporting frame having insulating bases therein, contact rods rigidly secured at each end in said bases parallel to the axis of said frame, a rotatable shaft mounted centrally of said contact rods, and a sectionalized bridging member resiliently secured on an ollset portion of said shaft and arranged to make linear, engagement with said contact rods.
2. A tap changing device comprisinga tube having insulating bases therein. contact rods rigidly secured at each endin said bases parallel to the axis of said tube, a rotatable shaft mounted centrally of said contact rods, a manipulating knob having an indicating device secured on said shaft externally of said tube, and a sectionalized annular bridging member resiliently mounted on an offset portion of said shaft.
3. A tap changing device comprising a tube having insulating bases therein, contacts mounted in said bases parallel to the axis of said tube, a rotatable shaft mounted centrally of said contacts, and a bridging member resilientl mounted on said shaft, said shaft coinciding with the axis of said tube, said tube and said bases being provided with ventilating passages.
