E. ROSSO DECORATED ELASTIC STRIP FILED Dec 4, 1920 Patentee" l? "ci, lQEB,
EMALINE T. ROSSO,
DECO RATED ELASTIC STEER Application filed December To @ZZ ifo/0m t may concern.: 1
Be it known that l, Erratum T. Rosso, a citizen of the United States; residing' at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Uhio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Decorated Elastic Strips, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in decorating elastic strips, and has for its object to provide a strip of this nature which may be ornamented or embellished by an application of beads or other analogous devices or articles, Without minimising; or interfering With the normal elasticity of the strip upon A,vhich the beadin is applied` For a further understanding* of the invention, reference is to be had to the following` description and to the accompanying drawing, in Which:
Figure l is an elevation of a section of elastic material decorated or finished in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken along the plane disclosed by the line 2 2 of Figure l, and
Figure 3 is a similar view taken through a.'
slightly modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the details of the invention, l take a section of elastic material l. of any suitable nature, such for example as an elastic fabric, of the type Which may be employed for very numerous purposes, one instance of Which may be its use in connection with Wearing apparel or in various novelties.
lt is desirable that such material should. be decorated or otherwise rendered attractive for both commercial and vaesthetic reasons, and to this end it has heretofore been customary to produce the elastic fabric in varying colors or tints or to embellish the same by means of embroidery and similar needle Work. However, the present invention aims to improve such ornamentation by applying glass or other beads to one or more of the exterior surfaces of the material, and in this manner to produce a novel and pleasing visual effect, which is believed to be an improvement over the previous methods of decoration above outlined.
It is of course not Within the province of this application to protect the application of beads or other similar devices to fabric or other non-elastic materlals, however, ,to
QF COZUMBUS, OHIO.
the best of my knowledge the application of beads or the like to an elastic material thought to be neiv and to constitute an orioinal idea. lleretofore.y has been considered impracticable to produce such an ornamental elfect because of the manner of fasterrine,` the beads in position. which has usually resulted in diminishing or overcoming` the elasticity of the material upon which they were applied. The present invention, therefore, consists in applying,r the beads to the elastic niaterial Without sacrificing` in any Way theelasticity of the material so embellished.
To this end, an exterior surface of the ma terial l has placed thereon a plurality of parallel rows of beads or other similar devices 2, the fastening thereof bein?,` effected. by passing threads 3 longitudinally through the eyes l of each of the roivs of the beads, in such manner that each of the threads Will be independent of the others. ln this instance the ends of said threads are suitably engaged or entrvined through the fabric constituting the section l, so that each rouT of beads Will be securely and positively fas* tened in connection with the elastic material upon which they are used. By this construetion it will be observed that each roW of beads is independently fa tened to the material l, and accordingly the said material may be stretched in the usual manner to its maXimum extent Without in any way having the elasticity thereof diminished or destroyed by the beading. The same result can be carried out by substitutino.,y as shown iu Figure 3, fine metallic wires 5 ror the threads 3, or other equivalent methods may be employed for connecting); the beads with the fabric l in accordance With the principles of this invention,
From the foregoing` description it Will be apparent that the present invention provides a new and useful method and article of manufacture wherein elastic material of any description may be attractivehT finished by beading,` for the purpose of rendering the material attractive and salable. ln its iinal form the material so finished may be placed into many different uses, such, for example, as Wrist Watch holders, belts or other similar garments or novelties. The beads ma of course, be of varying color and suitably pattepned! and matched to produce any desired e' ect.
