Description
Feb. 6, 1923. m mgsw C. L. GANDY VALVE STEM GUARD FILED DEc. 23, 1920 Patented at. c, 31923.
UNHTED STATES PATENT creme.
CHARLES L. GANDY, OF MOUNT AUBURN, ILLINOIS.
VALVE-STEM GUARD.
Application'filed. December 23, 1920. Serial No. 432,743.
, nate any possibility of sand or moisture entering between the inner tube and casing of a tire, through the valve stem opening. A further object of the invention is to provide a guard of this character which will brace the valve stem at a point adjacent to its connection with the inner tube associated therewith, to prevent movement of the valve stem with respect to the inner tube.
With the foregoing and other objects in.
view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it. being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 illustrates a sectional view through a rim and inner tube, showing the invention as applied.
Figure 2 illustrates a plan view of the guard.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the felloe of a motor vehicle wheel, which is sup-plied with the usual valve stem opening to accommodate the usual valve stem which in the present showing is indicated in the drawing at 6.
The inner tube of a tireis indicated at 7 which inner tube is secured to the valve stem 6, by means of the-usual bridge 8 and clamping nut 8 that cooperates with the head 9 of the valve stem.
Mounted on the valve stem 6 is the guard 10 forming an important feature of the invention, which guard is formed preferably of rubber and is provided with a central opening 11 to receive the valve stem 6, the opening 11 being relatively small as compared with the stem 6, so that the walls of the opening will closely engage the stem and prevent moisture from entering the tire, between the stem and stem opening, it being obvious that a. fluid-tight connection is formed between the stem and guard.
The guard is also provided with, a relatively fiat rim engaging surface 12 designed to contact with the inner edge of the rim to insure a water-tight connection at this point, while the opposed surface of the guard is shown as curved as art 13, or dome-shaped to allow the guard to give under the pressure of the securin nut 14 operating on the stem. 6, and at the same time provide sloping surfaces to contact with that portion of the inner tube adjacent to the valve stem and hold the inner tube out of contact with the side edges of the bridgewa sher.
From the foregoing it is obvious that the guard may be readily and easily applied to the usual tire constructions, now in use, and that the same will guard the space between the valve stem and the valve stem opening to exclude all foreign matter.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a guard adapted for use with tire valve stems, and bridge washers associated therewith, a body portion formed of rubber material and having a relatively flat circular rim engaging surface and having a domeshaped opposed surface, the dome-shaped surface of the guard adapted to lie under the bridge washer associated therewith, and said guard adapted to extend beyond the side edges of the bridge. washer, a nut on the valve stem for securing the guard and bridge washer against movement.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L. GANDY.
