Be it known that i, FRED HENRY Connie, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of rfhedford, in the county or Thomas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Spark irresters for Railroad Locomotives, ot which t-he following is a specification.
rihis invention relates to a spark arrester i'or railroad locomotives or the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a spark arrester which may be attached to the smoke stack oit a locomotive in an easy manner and which will thoroughly serve for are resting sparks issuing from the associated smoke stack and thus to prevent the possibility of a ire being started by the said sparks.
It is also an important object of the invention that the spark arrester be adapted to in no way interfere with the normal opera.- tion ot the locomotive.
lt is a further object of the invention that the arrester be so constructed that it may be swung` from its operative position with relation to a smoke stack in an easy manner and thus to permit sparks to freely pass from the smoke stack when so desired.
lt is a further object ot the invention that the apparatus be extremely simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages relating to details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts will hereinafter appear in the detailed description to iollow.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the front portion of the body of the locomotive and showing the arrester of the present invention applied to the smoke stack of said locomotive.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the arrester and showing a portion of the smoke stack to which the arrester is applied.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 ot Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings more particularly B indicates generally the body structure of a steam locomotive and S t-he smoke stack associated therewith which is of the usual construction.
ln carrying out the present invention there is provided a pair of clamp members Serial No. 542,850.
10, said clamp members being complemental and adapt-ed to be fitted about the smoke stack S and each clamp member having its ends terminating in an outwardly extending portion 11. Between the pairs oi extensions 11 occurring at opposing ends of the clamp members 10 there is positioned in each instance a bolt 12 whereby the clamp members may be secured about the smoke stack S. Also eachA clamp member may be provided with an inner lining of asbestos or the like as at 13. Each member 10 has `extending outwardly therefrom a pair of tangs 14 through which there is extended in each instance the threaded end ot a bolt 15. Each bolt 15 terminates at its upper end in a hook 16 which is adapted to engage upon the upper portion of the stack S as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The threaded or lower end of 75 each bolt 15 carries a nut 17 whereby the clamp members 10 may be adjustably raised or lowered. Each member 10 is also Jformed with a pair of apertured ears 17, the purpose of which will later appear. The members 10 serve to support the spark arrester which will presently be described and may be easily attached or detached from the stack S.
rlhe spark arrester proper comprises a cover generally indicated by the reference numeral 18 which is formed about its edge with a downwardly curved lip 19. The cover or top 18 has formed therewith the forward and rearward supporting legs 20 90 and 21, respectively, and also the pair of side supporting legs 22. rThe lower end of each supporting leg terminates in a sleeve 24. rlhe low-er end of each leg 2O and 21 is disposed between the associated pair of eX- tensions 11 of the clamp members 10 and journaled therebetween by a bolt 25. The bolt associated with the leg 21 is provided with a nut 26 for holding the same against displacement while the bolt associated with the leg 2O is provided with a cotter pin 27 for a similar purpose. The sleeve 24 of each side leg 22 is disposed between the associated pair of ears 17 or' the clamp members 10 and supported in this position by a 105 bolt 27, said bolt in each instance extending through the pair of ears 17 and also through the sleeve 24 as shown.
The cover or top 18 supports an inverted conical shaped casing generally indicated by the reference numeral 29, said casing having its base portion fern/'ted with. a plurality et ten-sions for securing; bers in positnin, end spurl; arrester boringa pair of downv-,fardly extendingg,` suppoitinr members secured between seid extensions or the clamping` members.
