Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. TUFTS, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUFFET-TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,424, dated November 11, 187,3; application filed August 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. TUETs, of Lynn, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Buffet-Table, or article capaple of being converted either into a table or a buifet, as occasion may require; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l denotes a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a front-end elevation of it as arranged for use as a table. Fig. 4 is a perspective elevation, Fig. 5 a vertical section, and Figs. 6 and 7 horizontal sections of it arranged as a buffet.
In the drawings, A denotes a board supported by a three-legged stand, B, furnished with two arms, C C', hinged to its front, and each provided with a supporting-leg, D, the same being so that one of the arms may be folded against the stand, and the other against the first one, and each may be turned out into a right angle with the stand. When the arms are folded together they take positions as shown in Fig. 7. To the front edge of the board A there is hinged a rectangular open frame, E, provided with a central bar, a, and
two doors, F F, all arranged as shown, the doors being hinged to the frame and provided with hooks b b and staples c c, to keep them closed, as occasion may require. Besides the frame E, there is hinged to the board A, at its rear corners and ends, two molded bars, G G, which, at their upper ends, are hinged to a cap-board, H, also hinged to the top of the frame E. Between the boards A Hare other boards or shelves, I I, which are arranged parallel to the boards A H and pivoted to the two bars G G, and are hinged to the frame E, all being so that, when the frame E is turned down into a horizontal position and rests upon the arms C C', the several boards A H I I shall edge, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Also, so
that, when the frame E is raised so as to stand vertically, the boards A H I I shall be in position as shown in Fig. 5, in which case the boards A H I will serve as shelves. Furthermore, the frame E is provided with two other or end doors, K K, which, hinged to it, may be turned from being ilatwise against the doors F F, around against the ends of the shelvesI I, so as to close the side openings of the buffet, there being a hook, r, and a staple, s, to each side door and the next adjacent bar G for the purpose of connecting the two. A movable mantel or cap-shelf, M, is placed 011 bars C C', when folded, and also against the front edge of the board A, and serves as a finish to the buffet.
I would remark that it will not be necessary to remove from the table any of the plates or articles placed on the respective boards of its top, as, during the act of either turning up or down the folding bufet, the shelves maintain their horizontal positions, and carry the articles with them.
I do not claim a folding table made as represented in the United States Patent No. 17,677. I combine with a device analogous thereto a frame and doors, whereby it may be converted into a close closet or buet, as explained. Consequently,
I claim as my invention- The buffet-table, substantially as described, consisting of the stand B, the folding arms (l C', the legs D D, the boards A H I, the frame E, the bars G G, and the front and end doors F and K K, all arranged and combined or applied together in manner and to operate essentially as specified.
. WM. H. TUFTS.
