L. RIUEL.
Apparatus fur Heating and Illuminating, N0. l44,414, Patetd Nov.l1, 1873`.
N Y S Wig/Ned1 Lauren/Enel u lyw'a afl/aride UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAURENT RUEL, OF ST. JOHNS-RUBY, VERMONT, ASSIQNOE TO HIMSELF AND JULIEN DEMERS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR HEATlNG AND ILLUMINATING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,414, dated November 11, 1873; application filed August 6, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURENT RUEL, of St. Johnsbury, of the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Heating and Illuminating Apparatus 3 and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, of it.
In such drawings, A denotes an ordinary lamp for burning kerosene, the burner b being provided with a globular glass chimney, B, having at top a neck, e, to enter and lit to an auxiliary metallic tapering chimney, C, extending up from the glass transparent chimney, as shown. The said metallic chimney goes up through a disk or shelf, D, supported by a series of rods, E E E, extending up from a clasp, F, which encompasses the burner at its base, and is provided with a clamp-screw to fasten it to the burner, a top view of the clasp being represented in Fig. 3. The auxiliary chimney goes up through a pitcher or pot, G,
i provided with a tube, g, extending up from and opening through its bottom, as shown in Fig. 4, which is a vertical section of the vessel.- The tube g rises somewhat above the top of the vessel, and goes through its cover h,
' and iits thereto and to the auxiliary chimney.
The vessel Gr is furnished with a handle, l, and a nose, c', whose opening or top is covered by a safety-cap, k, hinged to the main cover h.
Furthermore, the main cover h has a handle, m, for aiding in lifting the cover off the pot. The auxiliary metallic chimney will absorb heat and convey it to the contents of the pot, very much better than a glass chimney will, and besides it can be fitted to better advantage to the internal tube of the pot.
The above-described apparatus can be used for illumination or giving light to surrounding objects, as well as for heating a liquid when within the pot or vessel. The cap of the nose will serve as a safety-valve, in case of steam of too great pressure being produced in the pot.
The series of rods E E, arranged with the shelf D and the glass chimney B, in manner as shown, not only support the shelf better than a single post or rod, but act as supporters` of and guards to the glass chimney. They aid in holding it in place. Furthermore, they, with the clasp F and the shelf D, serve to hold the auxiliary chimney in connection with the glass chimney, the auxiliary chimney being provided, as shown in the drawings, with a iiange on which the shelf rests.
I claim- The clasp F, the series of rods E EE E, the shelf D, the main and auxiliaryv chimneys B C, and the burner b, arranged and combined substantially as shown and described.
LAURENT RUEL.
