Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFEIcE.
HEZEKIAH LOMBARD, JOSEPH P. MOBRILL, AND LEROY A. SWEATT, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES Foe curt-Inc Cosme-stones.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,398, dated November 11, 1873; application filed March 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HEZEKIAH Lot/11mm), JosEPH P. MORRILL, and LEROY A. SWEATT, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machine for Cutting Cobble-Stones, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in the improvement of machines for cutting cobble-stones, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1, taken on the line as to.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the bed-piece of the machine. B is the head. 0 C are the two cutters, arranged one in the bed and one in the head-piece, so that they strike the stone exactly opposite each other, and so that the stone will not be tipped or turned in either direction. The cutters are firmly bedded and fastened by means of plates D D, and bolts or screws, or in any substantial manner. The bed-piece A and the head B are connected together by the plates E E. These plates are securely fastened to the bed, and the head-piece B is pivoted thereto, so that its opposite end will readily rise and fall. F is a spiral spring, which is strained when the head is raised, as seen in the drawing. G
is a toggle-joint, operated by the lever H, by means of which the headpiece is raised. When the bars I I of the toggle-joint are thrown by the lever H from the same line, or so that they are not parallel with each other, the reaction of the spring brings down the head-piece, producing the desired result. F is a spiral spring, which the headpiece strikes as it descends, which prevents the cutters from coming in contact with each other.
The stone to be cut is held by hand upon the cutter of the bed, while the head-piece is operated by means of the lever by another person; but we do not confine ourselves to handpower for operating the machine, as any suitable motive power may be employed in any other manner.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of pivoted head B and stationary bed A, provided with cutters E E, heldapart by an intermediate spring, F, and operated as and for the purpose described.
HEZEKIAH LOMBARD. JOSEPH PLUMMER MORRILL. LEROY ALPHONSO SWEA'IT.
