To all 207mm 2'25 may concern Be it known that 1, Boone, L. AVERY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School F urniture, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in school furniture, especially to a combination desk and seat, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly eflicient in use. i

A further object of my improved combination desk and seat is the provision to produce facilities whereby the desk and seat may be adjusted independently of each other, to accommodate pupils of different heights and sizes of bodies.

A further object of my improved co1nbination desk and seat is the rovision of an improved construction of this character which may be readily dismantled for shipping and readily mounted together by any person.

A further object of my improved combination desk and seat is the provision of a structure of this character which will withstand the rough usage applied by the pupil using the same and which will be economical in manufacture.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a flange pedestal15, in the shape of an I-beam, secured to a base or floor plate 16 by means of a bolt'llthreaded in a socket 18 provided in one end of the said pedestal. The said pedestal 15 is held against revolving, should the. nut of the bolt 17 work loose by means of a triangular shaped groove 19 provided in the top surface of the said pedestal, said grooves adapted to receive the bevelled ends 20 provided on the pedestal l5. A school desk including a pedestal, adjustable supports and interlocking braees formed on the adjacent sides of saidflsiipports, one ofsaid braces beingprovided with a groove formed in its side edge; aiid' extending longitudinally therewith for the reception of the adj acent'side edge of theother of said braces, substantially as described} 3. In a school desk comprising in combination with a support and a pair of cooperating desk supports carried by said support in spaced relation with respect to each other, of spacing members on the adjacent sides of said desk supports, there being a recess formed in one of said members for the reception of a projection carried by the other of said members; substantially as described.

4. In a school desk, the combination of a base; an I-shaped pedestal detachably mounted on said base; a pair of co-operating desk supports detachably mounted on said pedestal; a pair of co-operating seat supports detachably mounted on said pedestal; and interlocking means for retaining the pair of cooperating desk and seat supports in spaced relation with respect to each other, substantially as described.

5. A combination desk and seat, comprising in combination with a base, of a pedestal fixed to said base; seat supports embracing the side edges of said pedestal and adapted to be adjusted longitudinally with respect thereto; a back rest for said seat; brackets carrying said back rest at one end and haw ing their opposite ends bent substantially at right angles adapted to engage the sides of said seat supports; and a bolt passing through said bent ends and said support for attaching said brackets to said supports and for securing said supports in the desired adjusted position, substantially as described.

In a school desk, the combination of a base; a pedestal rigidly mounted on said base; a seat member adjustably mounted on said pedestal; a pair of co-operating desk supports mounted on said pedestal and adjustable longitudinally with respect thereto; bracing lugs formed on the inner sides of said supports adjacent the end thereof and extending laterally therefrom; and a tongue formed on one of said lugs arranged to engage a recess formed in the other of said lugs, substantially as described.

A combination desk and seat comprising a base; a flange pedestal mounted on said base; a pair of co-operating seat supports mounted on said pedestal and adjustable longitudinally with respect thereto; a pair of co-operating desk supports mounted on said pedestal and adjustable longitudinally with respect thereto; and lugs integrally formed on the inner sides of said seat and desk supports, the inner edges of one of said lugs provided with a groove for the reception of the inner edge of the other of said lugs, substantially as described.

A combination desk and seat comprising a base; a flange pedestal mounted on said base; a pair of co-operating seat supports mounted on said pedestal and adjustable longitudinally with respect thereto; a pair of co-operating desk support-s mounted on said pedestal and adjustable longitudinally with respect thereto; lugs integrally formed on the inner sides of said seat and desk supports, the inner edges of one or said lugs provided with a groove for the reception of the inner edge of the other of said lugs; and a tongue formed on one of said lugs adapted to engage a recess in the other of said lugs, substantially as described.

A combination desk and seat compris ing a base; a flange pedestal mounted on said base; a pair of co-operating seat supports mounted on said pedestal and adjustable longitudinally with respect thereto; a pair of co-operating desk supports mounted on said pedestal and adjustable longitudinally with respect thereto; lugs integrally formed on the inner sides of said seat and desk supports, the inner edges of one, of said lugs provided with a groove for the reception of the inner edge of the other of said lugs; a tongue formed on one of said lugs adapted to engage a'recessv in the other of said lugs; and a bolt positioned through said supports adjacent the ends thereof for rigidly securing said supports in the desired adjusted position. substantially as described.

In a combination desk and seat comprising in combination with a pedestal having oppositely disposed flanges, ofa support carried by one of said flanges a desk support carried by the other of said flanges, said desk and said seat supports each comprising oppositely arranged parts in spaced relation with respect to each other; aback rest for said seat; supports for said back rest. the lower ends of said back rest supports being bent substantially at right angles for engagement with the sides of said seat supports; and means for securing said back rest supports to said seat supports;and for securing said seat supports in position on the flange of said pedestal, substantially as described.

A combination desk and seat comprising a base; a pedestal mounted on said base having bevelled side edges; a pair of co-operating seat supports mounted on said pedestal and adjustable longitudinally with re spect thereto; bracing lugs integrally formed adjacent the ends of said seat support, the end of one of said lugs provided with a groove for the reception of the end or" the other of said lugs; a pair of co-operating desk supports mounted on said pedestal; and a vertically extending groove adjacent the ends of said desk supports for the reception of said bevelled side edges of saidpedestal, substantially as described.

12. A combination desk and seat comprising a base; a groove in said base; a pedestal rigidly mounted in said groove having bev elled side edges; a pair of co-operating seat supports mounted on said pedestaland adjustable longitudinally with respect thereto; a vertically extending groove adjacent the end of said seat support for the reception of &

said bevelled edges or" said pedestal; a pair of co-operating desk supports mounted on said pedestal and adjustable longitudinally with respect thereto; vertically extending groove-s adjacent the ends of said desk support for the reception of said bevelled edges of said pedestal; and means for rigidly securing said seatand said desk supports in the desired adjusted position, substantially as described.

13. A combination desk and seat comprising a base; a pedestal mounted on said base havingbevelled side edges; a pair of cooperating seat supports embracing said pedestal; vertically extending grooves on the inner sides or said supports adjacent the end thereof for the reception of said bevelled edges of said pedestal; bracing lugs integrally formed onsaid desk supports, the end of one oi said lugs provided With a groove for the reception of the end of the other of said lugs; a pair of co-ope'rating desk supports embracing the side edges of said pedestal; vertically extending grooves on the inner sides of said desk supports adjacent one end thereof for the reception o'f'said bevelled edges of said pedestal; and bracing lugs integrally formed on said desk supports, the end of one of said lugs provided with a groove for the reception of the other of said lugs, substantially as described.

14. In a combination desk and seat, the combination of a base; a flanged pedestal having bevelled side edges mounted on said base; a seat support embracing said pedestal; vertically extending grooves formed in said seat supports for the reception of said bevelled edges of said pedestal; lugs termed on the inner sides of said seat sup ports and extending laterally therefrom; a tongue formed on one of said lugs adapted to engage a recess formed in the other of said lugs; a desk support embracing the said pedestal; vertically extending grooves in said desk support for the reception of said bevelled edges of said pedestal; lugs integrally formed on the inner sides of said desk support; and a tongue formed on one of said lugs and engaging a recess formed in the other of said lugs, substantially as described.

15. In a combination desk and seat, the combination of a base; pedestal having bevelled ed es mounted on said base a seat support emoraci'n said pedestal; vertically extending grooves in said seat supports for the reception of said bevelled edges of said pedestal; liiigs formed on the inner sides of said seat supports and extending laterally therefrom; a tongue formed on one of said lugs and engaging a recess in the other of said lugs; a desk support embracing the said pedestal; vertically extending grooves in said desk 81 pport for the reception of said bevelled edges of said pedestal; and brackets formed on one end of said desk supports and secured to the said desk, substantially as described.
