Be it known that I, ROY GRA NvILLn SANDS,
a. citizen of the United States, residing at Waukegan, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fuses, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference bein had to the accompanying drawing, forminga part of. this specification. My invention relates to improvements in electric fuses of that type known as rechargeable or re-fillable fuses and in which there are provided means for detachably holding the fuse strip in position, so that when the strip becomes destroyed a new strip may be inserted without discarding thc entire ifuse cartridge.
One ot the objects of' my invention is to provide a cartridge fuse ofi this type which shall consist oi' few simple parts which may be readily assembled and disassembled to permit the easy and ready renewal of the fuse strip.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated certain embodiments of my invention, it being understood, of course, that the invention as set forth in the appended claims may take various Y'orms and be embodied in various structures without departing from the spirit thereof. In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. l and 2` the fuse is of the knife-blade car.-y tridge type and comprises, as illustrated. an insulating cylindrical shell l. preferably 'formed oi fibre or like insulating material. A t each end of this shell there is arranged a metallic tei-rule 2. This ferrule is tightly secured on the shell proper in any suitable manner. lVithin the ferrule there is formed an annular shoulder 3, on which the supporting washer 4 is adapted to rest. This washer is of the same shape as the shell and being circular, and
as at 5, so that the fuse strip 6 can be bent over the edge of the washer and its end 7 lie flat on the outer face of the washer. A loop 8 is formed by the bending over of the f usestrip, and this loop, it will be noted, lies 1n the notch 5. Adapted to rest upon each washer 4 is a` second disc 9 having extended therefrom a knife-blade 10 and provided with an ear l1 also adapted to ft in the notch 5. It will be noted that the notches at the end of the fuse are oppositely disposed, so that the` fuse may extend diagonall y through the body of the shell. he cars 11 so situate the discs 9 that the knifeblades l() at each'eud are parallel. For holding` the dises 9 and the washers 4 in position a cap l2 is provided, which is internally screw-threaded and adapted to engage screw-threads on the ferrule 2. This cap is provided with an annular shoulder 13 adapted to engage over the edge of the disc 9, and when the cap is screwed home the disc is securely clamped in position and the end 7 ot the fuse clamped between the vwasher 4 and the disc 9, which in effect ilorms a part oi.E thc cap 12. A, small observation opening 14 is formed in the disc through which the rating of the fuse-w which rating is stamped on the end thereof`may be read.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a fuse which is not provided with knife-blades such as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. In these figures there is provided the same insulating shell 1 having the ferrules 2 fastened on the ends thereof, the ferrules having formed therein an internal shoulder 3 on which the washer 4 is adapted to be placed. The edge of the ferrule is notched, as at and the fuse 6 is adapted to be looped over the edge of the washer, in the same manner as described with respect to Figs. l and 2. In Fig. 3, instead of providing a knife-blade and. two-part cap, as illustrated in Fig. l, I have provided a. ca 15 which clamps down upon the end of the fuse to clamp the fuse strip between it and the washer 4. This cap is likewise provided with an opening 16 through which the ratine: tle inse may be read, Preferably the cap in4 both forms ot tuses 'is hnurled, as at ll', so that the saine :may bc easily rotated, to screw iton and oilf the ferrules.
