.ALLEN GLENN, 0F SHELL LAKE, WISCONSIN.
i SCYTHE SNATH.
Application 1ed August 30, 1921.
To all wlw/m, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALLEN GLENN, of Shell Lake, in the county of Washburn and State of Wisconsin, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scythe Snathes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in scythes and refers particularly to the construction of the snath or connection of the knife or blade with the body of the scythe and of the handles or grips of the implement.
The main object of my invention is the provision of means for securing the knife or blade and the handles or grips to the body of the scythe which will insure a reliable fastening without damaging or weakening the body and which may be adjusted to the proper position and it on the body.
Another object of my invention is the provision of fastening means of the character and for the purposes stated which can be quickly applied and removed; which will be adjustable to the proper position; which will he simple, durable and inexpensive, and
which in every particular will be efficient` and practical.
lilith these objects in view my invention consists of fastening means embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts as herein described and claimed and as shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a complete scythe equipped with my improvements.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the fastening for securing the blade or knife.
Fig. 3 iS a detail view of the fastening for the handles or grips.
Fig. l is a detail view of a part of the sleeve.
Referring by numeral to the drawings in which the same numerals denote the same parts in allv the views:
The numeral 1 designates the sweep or body of the Scythe and 2 denotes the knife or blade having the tongue 3, which lits in Serial No. 496,932.
the opening 4, provided between the stirrup 5 and the sleeve 6.
The sleeve 6 thus fits snugly the end of the l v body and is formed, with the curved eXtension 7 having a slot 8, to permit adjustable connection by means of fastening 9, and an opening 10 to receive the fastening 11, the whole adjustably connecting the sleeve.
They sleeve is also provided with kerfs 12, which guide and retain the stirrup, which bears in its closed end 13, the clamping screw 14:, which serves to bind and retain the stirrup upon the tongue of the blade.
The means for securingthe handles or grips 15, dispense entirely with bolts passing through the body and consist each of the stem 16, having upper threaded end 17 to receive clamping nuts 18, while at its lower Aend said stem is formed with the split ring 19, having teeth 20, to bite into the body and having its split ends formed with ears 21, to receive the clamping screws 22, the washers 23 being seated between the handles 15, and said rings 19, as shown in Figure 3.
It will thus be seen that my improvements dispense entirely with fastenings which passv through and weaken the body of the scythe and which also require considerable time and difliculty in applying and removing, and provide means which can be easily and quickly applied; which are adjustable, which add strength and durability to the scythe and which are simple, inexpensive, eflicient and practical.
I claim:
1. A scythe consisting of a body, a blade formed with a tongue, a sleeve fitting the end of the body and a stirrup clamp mount` ed in the Sleeve and securing the said tongue in place, said sleeve being formed with ver-v tical kerfs which receive and guide the clamp.
2. A scythe consisting of a body, a blade,
a sleeve secured to the end of the body, and an adjustable clamp mounted in the sleeve for securing the blade in place, said sleeve being formed with vertical kerfs which receive and guide the clamp.
3. scythe consisting of a body, a blade,
an adjustable clamp to secure the blade, hand gips, and clamps oziii'ied by said grips for securing them to the handle, said sleeve being formed with vertical keil's which re oeve and guide the clamp.
Ll. A Scythe consisting of a. body, adjustable band grips secured to said body, a sleeve liting the loWei` end of the body and formed with vertical keifs, a stiirup clamp litting upon the sleeve in the kei-ifs thereof, u blade having' a Vtongue fitting' between the loWei face of the sleeve and stil-iup clump and o clamping screw mounted in the upper end of the stifiup clamp and engaging the sleeve to retain ilie bladein propel' position.
In 'testimony whereof l lieieuno zii'lix my signature.
