Be it known that I, MIKE V1nos, a citizen of Yugoslavia, residing at Renton, in the count et King and State of VVashington. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scythes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scythes and has for its object the provision of a novel construction whereby the reaper may assume an upright position while wielding the scythe and the scythe will be so disposed as to out through the grain smoothly and close to the ground with a minimum effort upon the part of the reaper. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and Will be hereinafter fully set forth.

Figure 1 is a plan view of a soythe constructed in accordance with my invention. and
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a snath 1 which is preferably a straight bar having its lower end tapered slightly, as shown at 2. At the upper end of the snath is provided a grip 3 Which extends from the snath at a right angle thereto and has near one end a recess or mortise to receive a reduced tongue 4 at the end of the snath, the tongne being held in the mortise by a dowel pin 5, as shown. A post 6 is secured to and entends from the snath at an intermediate voint of the length thereof. and this post 6 is disposed at a right angle to the snath and also has its longitudinal axis at a right angle to the longitudinal axis of the grip member 3, as will be readily understood upon reference to Fig. 2. This post 6 is mortised into the snath and is held therein by a donel pin 7. At the free end of the post 6 is a grip member 8 corresponding in form to the grip member 3 and extending from the post on a line parallel with the grip 3, as shown in Fig. 1.
The scythe blade 9 is provided at its butt end, with a tangr 10 seated against the under side of the snath 1 at the lower end thereo or in a shallow longitudinal recess provided in the snath and is held therein by a collar or gripping band 11 which encircles the lower tapered portion of the snath and the tang 10 of the scythe blade so that, if the collar be foroed upwardly along the tapered 1, 1924. 13 in Fig. 2, so that it and the widthof the blade Will be disposed in a plane parallel with a plane passing through the centers of the grip members 3 and 8, Which plane is indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. it Will be seen that I have provided a very simple and inexpensive scythe. As the post and grip members are connected to the snath by dowel pins and the blade is held to the snath by a collar or elamping band having a wedging engagement with the snath, it is not necessary to employ any bolts in the production of my device the construction being simplified without any loss of strength and the cost of production being like-wise minimized. Inasmuch as the blade is disposed in a. plane parallel with a plane passing through the grip members, the user may assume an erect position and the blade.will be then held naturallv so that it Will ont close to the gronnd and pass through the grain easily and smoothly.
Having thus described the invention, 1 daim:
