To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Cnxnnxon A. lln'r'rs and Ci-IAnLns Orr, citizens of the United States. residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented anew and useful Form- Registerin Box for Color. Printing, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to form registering boxes for color printing, and particularly to a device of this character which is used in printing oilices for? registering forms for printing presses to obtain perfect reg stry of colors.

It is our experience that color printing from plates on printing presses requires considerable expenditure of time and necessitates the assistance of at least three men to locl; the forms, to manipulate the forms to make registry, and to pull an impression to try the registry, beside, pulling off the press from twenty five to five hundred strike sheets to be used in obtaining proper registry. The form must be taken from the press, compared with the strike sheets, adjustments made,- impressions pulled, time and time again and until the exact register is obtained. lVhen forms are registered on different types of proof presses it is not possible to obtain an absolutely perfect register of colors and the attempt involves a great waste of paper stock in repeatedly trying out the register which, at best, is a try-out practice.

The object of our invention is to provide a form register box for receiving the printers form and for, thereafter, manipulating the form in the box to promptly and accurately obtain perfect register of the form to efiect perfect register of the color scheme and, thereby, save time and delay, save paper stock, and save the expense of assistants.

The box .is arranged to receive the printing. form on its floor 2, so that the engraving ofthe form-will closely approach the inner side of its lid. The floor member 2, is formed solid and on the sides of" the member are suitably fastened side ,members 5, and on the ends of the member are fastened end members 6, the side and end members are fastened on the floor member by screws 7. Centrally disposed in the box is a color printing form 8, which is locked in a chase 9, the quoins 10, and furniture 11, holding the form in proper position in the chase. Between the sides and ends of thechase 9, are arranged pieces of furniture 12 which are spaced suitably from the inner sides of the box to permit shifting adjustments thereof to hold the .chase in any desired position. In the side members 5, and end members 6, are suitably imbedded posts 3, two in each side member and one in each end member, which posts are located suitably for receiving first, abore provided with screw. threads and then, winged screws 14;

vwhich are operatively engaged by thescrew threads in the posts. The screws 14, are of a suitable length to pierce through the sides and ends of the box and the posts 13, and extend inwardly of the boXa-distance calculated to provide ample space for adjust ing the furniture 12, and thereby adjusting the form to any desired position.

The box 1, is provided with a lid 15,which is hingedly mounted on the box by a plu rality of hinges 16. The lid comprises a frame 17, having the inner portion of its lower sides excavated to receive a plate of glass 18, and beneath the glass at sheetof, transparent material, in this instance, a sheet of transparent celluloid 19, which is held to press upon the glass by transversely extending tensioned straps 20, the terminals of which are convexed to form bearings 21, the straps being m'ovably held to bear on the .60. Referring to the drawings-the form celluloid sheet by elongated plates 22, which are attached on the lower side of the side members of the frame 1'7, by screws in the well known manner.

In Figure 1, the form shown comprises four plates for printing a two color carton and, for the purpose of properly illustrating and describing the modus operandi, one form only is provided with engraved letters and border. The solid color is blue 24, and the border 25, is orange, as also are the letters 26. One color is printed as the key color and the other color should register perfectly with the key color.

\Vhen using the form register box the color forms are locked in the chase 9, with enough furniture around the chase to allow suitable space on all four sides, to shift the form to obtain perfect register. An impression of the form is then taken on transparent celluloid sheet 19, in any suitable manner, the impression taken forms the key for the other colors. To register the other colors the form is placed in the register box and properly disposed therein, as above mentioned, and the lid of the box closed down, thus bringing the celluloid sheet to closely bear on the form. The several adjusting screws are then manipulated to adjust the form as closely to the key impression as possible. If the register is not thereby perfect the form plates in the chase 9, are moved and swung to effect the perfect register of the form with the key color on the celluloid sheet. When making the adjustments mentioned the form is clearly visible to the operator through the glass 18 and transparent celluloid 19, and the latter impinging fairly upon the form he can readily determine the adjusting movements to be made to obtain a perfect register, which movements of the form plates are noted and designated by wax pencil marks on the glass 18. The lid is raised and the moves indicated by the pencil marks are made in the form plates and the operation repeated until a perfect register is obtained. The register box requires the attention of one man only and the time for making an actually perfect register is reduced upwards of one half the time required and consumed by the old method of registry, and a far greater degree of accuracy of register is effected than is possible by any other meth' od. The register box is also useful in male ing register of forms for the electrotype foundry.

Having described our invention what we claim is 1. A form register box for color printing, consisting of a shallow box adapted for receiving a printing form, a lid hingedly mounted on said box, said lid comprising a frame provided with a glass plate and with a sheet of transparent material bearing on the lower side of the glass plate and adapted for bearing on a printing form lodged in said box, furniture slidably arranged in said box, and a plurality of press screws operating in the sides and ends of said box and adapted for moving said furniture to shift said printing form.

2. A form register box for color printing, consisting of a shallow box adapted for receiving a printing form, a lid hingedly mounted on said box, said lid comprising a frame provided with a glass plate and with a sheet of transparent material on the lower side of the glass plate and adapted for bearing on a printing form lodged in said box, furniture slidably arranged in said box, a plurality of press screws operating in the sides and ends of said box and adapted for moving said furniture to shift said printing form, and a plurality of tensioned strips slidably arranged on said lid and adapted for holding the transparent material in place.

3. A form register box for color printing, consisting of a box adapted for receiving a printing form, a lid hingedly mounted on said box,'said lid comprising a frame provided with a sheet of transparent material adapted for bearing on said printing form when the lid is closed on the box and having impressed thereon a key impression of the form, and means associated with said box adapted for registering said printing form with the key impression thereof on the transparent material on said lid.

In a form register box for color printing, the combination with the box, of a lid hingedly mounted on the box, said lid comprising a frame provided with a sheet of transparent material bearing thereon a key impression of a printers form, and means arranged on the box for moving said form to register with the impression thereof on the transparent sheet on said lid.
