ROBERT R. HUGHES, J R., OF UTICA, NEW YORK, vASSIGNOR TO O'NION SPECIAL MACHINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.A
'coNonALED STITCHED snaar.
Application led Decemberlz, 1920. Serial No. 431,931.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT R. HUGHES, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at 9. The structure shown in Fig. 3 is. similar to thatof Frg. 2), except that this under portlon 8 of the blnding strip is not inat Utica, in the county of Oneida, State of`\.\turned but lies flat between the two fabric New York, 'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concealed Stitched Scams, of which the following is ay description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference 'marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful -improvements in concealed stitched seams, and more particularly to a two-line seam which can be used for seaming garments.
An object of the invention is to provide a seam for the above purpose wherein one edge of two fabric sections united by the improved seam is covered with a binding and the binding is secured to the fabric sections by stitches which are concealed from view at the front or face side of the garment.
In the drawings which show by Way of illustration one embodiment .of the invention- Figure l is a plan View of a portion of two fabric sections with the invention embodied therein;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2--2y of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2, but showin a slightly modified arrangement of the bin ing, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4---1 of Fig. -2 and showing the stitches diagrammatically.
In carrying out the invention, the two fabric sections A and B are overlapped as indicated in the drawings, and the edge portion 1 of the fabric section A is inturned or infolded so as to lie between the two fabric sections. A line of stitches 2 indicated diagrammatically in the drawings is passed through thefabric section B, the inturned portion l and the body of the fabric section A adjacent to the line of fold 3 in the fabric section A. Extending about the edge 4 ofthe fabric section B is `a'binding strip 5. Said binding strip 5 has its upper or outer face portion 6 inturned or infolded as indicated at 7 so as to lie between the fabric section B and the outer face portion 6 of the binding strip. There is also shown in Fig. 2, the under face portion 8 of the binding strip inturned as indicated are secured together by a. line of stitches l0. Said line of stitches 10 include a needlel thread which lies between the inturned portion 7 and the outer face portion 6 of the binding strip so that said needle threadis lcompletely concealed by the outer face portion of the binding strip. Said needle threadV is indicated at n in the drawlngs. The needle .thread is formed into a series of loops nf which pass through'the inturned-portion 7 lof :the binding strip and the fabric section A, thus securing the binding strip firmly and ti htly about the edge of the fabric section and securing both the binding strip and the fabric section B to the fabric'section A.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown more in detail, but yet diagrammatically,
stitches showing, and at a distance from the binding is a parallel line of stitching. This makes a very ,neat appearing seam for'garments, and particularly useful in connection with the seaming of trousers for dress suits,
suits for letter carriers, bath robes, and the like.
It is obvious of course, that the stitches for uniting the parts may be of any well known type. The essentialfeature consists in the placing of the stitches so that they will becon'cealed.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A concealed stitch seam comprising two overlapped fabric sections, the edge portion of one of the fabric sections beinginturned, a line of stitchespassing through said fabric sections adjacent the fold in said inturned portion, a binding extending about the edge of the other section and' including outer and under face portions, the outer face portion thereof being inturned, a line of stitcbes for secring the binding' the edge rtion' of the fabrie se'tion'and for secur-I portion of the binding strip, the fabric secvtion -around which the binding strip is Placed, the under face portion of the bind-` m strip and the other' fabric section.
ture.
testimony whereof, I aiix my signa--' ROBERT R. HUGHES, Jep
