Description
Patented dan. 30, "i923 HENRY A. SCHIVDT, 0F TRONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
BRACELET AND LINK TI-TEREJEOR.
Application filed October 18, 1921.
To all 'w 7mm t may concern.'
Be it known that l, HENRY A. SCi-miler, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toronto, Gntario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bracelet-s :ind Links Theretor, of Which the 'following is a specification.
rlfhe present invention relates to bracelets and more particularly to bracelets of the flexible g'lat-linh type, wherein the links are so connected as to yield radially to permit the bracelet to adapt itself to the arm oli the wearer.
Among the objections heretofore found in bracelets of this type is deficient licxibility, multiplicity or parts, a plurality or solder points for each linlr, complexity ot construe tion and cost oit nianutaeture. ln general, the purpose of this invention is to overcome these and other objections and provide a simple, thoroughly flexible bracelet in which the links each comprise a single piece so shaped and disposed as to interlock with each other, each link having but one solder point, and the Whole being producible at a lon7V cost.
ln order to more clearlyv disclose the coni struction, operation, and use oi the invention, reference should be had to the aecompanying drawings 'forming part oiE the present application. Throughout the several figures of the drawings like reference characters designate the saure parts in the several views.v
ln the drawings:
F ig. l is a top plan View of several links, connected together;
Fig. 2 is a top plan View oi one oit the link blanks, enlarged;
Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3 3 of F ig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a central, vertical, longitudinal cross section through Fig. l.
lt is understood, of course, that all oi' the views are greatly enlarged in order t clearl7 set forth the details ot construction. Pre-lerably,oi course, the bracelet is made ,i iid, platinum, or other suitable precious metal and, if desired, may be set with diamonds or other suitable gems as more particularlvY indicated in Fig. l.
ln the -preferred method of manufact-ur a suitable piece oiI the metal is stamped and punched to form the blank shown in This may be done either as a single opera tion or by several. lt is obvious, that the Serial No. 508,516.
openings -for the gein settings may be omitted 1i desired and the metal left either plane or ornamented in those parts. lThe blank, so made, comprises a top member l having n tongue receivingI seat or recess 2 with an ear 3 at each end thereof, a bottom inenibcr 4L having a tongue 5 adapted to be seated in recess 2, as will later appear, and a connecting We depressed slightly below the plane oit both members and provided Witlrtwo similar parallel tongue receirin.)` openings 'i' and en intermediate strip 8, thl whole web being adapted to be folded upon itselit so that the two openings are exact-ly superposed one upon the other to constitute in reality, single opening through the j ded web, xmore clearly shown in llig. i he shoulder termed by depressing the web below the bottoni member is beveled at 9 and the angle made by folding the tongue i :it its junction with bottom member Ll :tor insertion through the superposed or :dined opeinngs 7, is similarly beveled at l0 so that the two oppositely beveled surfaces are adjacent irl in position to cooperate when the parte are assembled, as clearly shown in li" 'lhe web S which is rectangular in oros,; soctiou in the lint blank, becomes submli'y seini-circular in late 1al crosssecu m when it is toldo/rl about its longitudinal axis in the itohliug step by which the lower member is lnfought beneath the upper.
ln making a bracelet trom a series oi these link-blanks, each blank is folded as in ll `igz d, so that the two openings become superposed or alined at one side or edge of the top member and in position to freely receive the tongue 5 which has been previously bent up from the bottom member 4C after the bottom member has been folded over beneath the top member l, as in F ig. 4t. ln that, the final, position, the tongue end lies in recess 2, between the ears 3, and is secured there by solder il, that being the only solder connc tion in each link. @t cour e the Width ch opening 7 is sli`;'htly greater than the u mess ot tongue 5 to allow the tongue 5 to here su'liicient play in these oi'ieniiigs to prevent binding and insure full flexibiliity. Likewise, the bevels Ll and l0, being on e inner cireiunterence ot the bracelet pern'ut the links to be rocked toward each other et these points, ttor 'flexing of the bracelet. A A
llA desired, the top member l muy be out or punched out as at l? to torni e sent 'tor lli) a suitable gem 13, and the other member may be punched out as at 14 to provide access to the under face of the gem, or, if desired, simply to lighten the bracelet and, at the same time reduce the quantity'7 of valuable metal required.
As will be seen, a single simple stamping will produce each link, and the two successive simple bends place the ton ue of each link in position to be passed trough the openings of the link preceding it, a single solder point securing the tongue in its recess.
The construction, while slmple, inexpensive, and eiiicient is stron and durable,
practically the entlre strain alling upon the web 8, doubled over, and the tongue 5, at the point where the tongue can best support the strain-where it is bent at an angle from the bottom member 4. Also, such disposition 'of the parts allows of greatest possible iexibility, the web 8 acting, practically, as a pivot about which tongue 5 and its link rock, as will be clear.
It is thought that the construction, operation and use ofthe invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.
Changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and disposition of the several parts of the invention within the scope of the claims, without departing from the field of the invention, and it is meant to include all such within this application wherein only a referred form has been disclosed.
. aving thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters latent is:
1. A bracelet blank comprising a top member having a tongue receiving recess in one edge, a bottom member adapted to be folded to a position directly beneath the top member, a ton ue carried by said bottom member and adapted to be seated in the aforesaid recess, means for securing said tongue in said recess, and a web connecting said top and bottom members and provided with tongue receiving o enings.
2. A racelet lanky comprising a top member aving a shoulder, a bottom member adapted lto be Vfolded directly beneath said top member to enga e the aforesaid shoulder and s ace said mem ers apart, a tongue carried y said bottom member, and a web connecting said members and provided with tongue receiving openings, said web having a strip adapted to be engaged by said tongue and to lie between said members in their superposed relation.
3. A bracelet blank comprising a top member having a shoulder and also having a tongue receiving recess, a bottom member adapted to be folded directly beneath said top member to engage the aforesaid shoulder and space said members apart, a tongue carried by said bottom member, and adapted to be seated in said recess, means for securing said tongue in said recess, and a web connecting said members and provided with tongue receiving openings, said web having a strip adapted to be en aged by said tongue and to lie between sai members in the su perposed position.
4. A plurality of links each comprising a top member and a bottom member integrally connected, said members being adapted to be superposed one upon the other, a connecting element carried by each link and adapted to lie between the free ends of the members of an adjacent link to space said members and having tongue receiving openings therethrough, a tongue carried by the lower member of each link and extended through such tongue receiving openings of an adjacent link, and means for securing said tongue in the adjacent link.
5. A bracelet blank comprising a top and a bottom member integrally connected and adapted to be superposed one above the other, spacing shoulders whereby said members may be maintained in spaced relation adjacent the edge at which they are oonnected, a connecting element carried by each link and adapted to lie between and space the free ends of the upper and lower members when in superposed relation, and a tongue carried by said bottom member and engaging said connecting element.
6. A plurality of links each comprising a top member and a bottom member integrally connected, said members being adapted to be superposed one above the other, means for spacing said members in superposed relation, a connecting element carried by each link and adapted to lie between the spaced members of an adjacent link, a tongue carried by the latter link and engaging said element, the edges of the lower member being beveled, Where adjacent, to prevent binding of one upon the other.
Signed at Toronto, Canada, this 12th day of October, 1921.
