Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MOSES W. STAPLES, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
v Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,365, dated November 4, 1873; application filed September 11, 1873.
with inclined ribs or flanges b, combined with` a revolving hollow cylinder, B, for the reception of the clothes contained within the said tank, and composed of overlapping slats a, arranged obliquely with spaces between them, through which and through the clothes the water is forced when the said cylinder is turned in the direction of the arrow, all as shown in the vertical section, Fig. l, ofthe accompany ing drawing.
The tank A is supported in the present instance upon the top of a stove or heater, D, shown in Fig. 1, and in the transverse section, Fig. 2, by which the water in the said tank may be boiled or maintained at the required high temperature, and at the top of the tank is a hinged lid, d, on raising which access may be obtained to the cylinder B through an open: ing, which is provided with a hinged lid, c. One of the journals of the cylinder extends through a suitably-packed bearing in the side of the water-tank, and is provided with a crank, f, Fig. 2, by which the said cylinder may be revolved.
The tank having been partially filled with water and suds, and the clothes introduced into the cylinder, the lids d and c are closed and the said cylinder is turned in the direction of the arrow, Fig. l. The obliquelyarranged slats a, which are snfciently overlapped to prevent the escape of the clothes from between them, will have a tendency to carry the water in the tank in the same direction in which the cylinder is turned; but this tendency will be resisted by the ribs or flanges b hence, as the cylinder revolves, forcible currents of water must pass between the slats and permeate the agitated clothes and dislodge the particles of dirt from the interstices of the fabric.
The above result might be attained in a measure by simply roughening or corrugating the interior surface'of the base of the tank but I prefer to employ the ribs b, arranged as described.
The tank might be supported upon a suitable frame or standards in place of the stove D, but I prefer to use the latter as a combined support and heater.
I claim as my invention- The combination, in a washing-machine, of a hollow revolvingl cylinder, B, consisting of overlapping slats a and inclined ribs or flan ges b, arranged wit-hin theouter casing, as specined.
In testimony whereof I have signed myname to this specification in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
