Description

C. SAWDEY.
Cattle Stanchions.
N0.v144,360, Patented Nov..4,l873.
Fig. I.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN W. SAWDEY, OF POOLVILLE, NEW YORK.
v IMPROVEMENT IN CATTLE-STANCHIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,360, dated November 4, 1873; application led July 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CALVIN W. SAWDEY, of Poolville, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Self- Adjusting Cattle- Stanchion; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same,
reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of referencemarkedthereon.
Figure l ofthe drawings is a representation oi' a front view ofmy cattle-stanchion. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to cattlestanchions; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement ofthe parts forming a cattlestanchion, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates the side standards, and B the trough. C indicates the lower, and l) the upper, transverse bar of the stanchion-frame. Thesebars are longitudinallyr and vertically slotted for the reception of the pivoted stanchions E. F indicates the vertical ba-rs of the stanchion frame. This frame is adapted to swing by means of the pivotal rod a, which runs lengthwise of the upper transverse bar D, being secured thereto bysuitable lugs. The ends of said rod are journaled to the side standards A, or in suitable bearings thereto connected. By the use of these yielding stanchions cattle are enabled easily to lie down or get up, and, when reaching for hay, are not apt to injure their shoulders. G indicates a transverse bar, forming the upper edge of the trough or feed-box. This is lined to the side standards. Below this bar is an opening, H, which is closed by a door, K, hinged at its lower edge to the trough-bottom. When raised the door K is kept in place by means of abutton, m,`pivoted to the bar G. Vhen this door is let down the box is readily cleaned, both on the bottom b and rear wall-door K, the latter being presented upward or flush with said bottom for this purpose.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cattle-stanchion, having the standards A, feed-box B, forward swinging stanchions or frame, the xed edge-bar G, and the hinged rear door K, substantially as'specied.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto substribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CALVIN W. SAWDEY.
