Be it known that I, FREDERICK. L. DREE- nousn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barber, in the county of Ada and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plow-Disk Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to disk plows and has for its object the provision of novel means for mounting a plow disk upon the beam of a plow, the mounting including a casting rigidly secured to the plow beam and further including novel bearing means for the stern or shank which carries the disk.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character in which' means is provided for preventing dust and dirt from coming in contact with the various bearings for the stem or shank of the disk.
An additional object is the provision of a mounting .of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture and installation, highly efficient in use, durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
lith the above and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described, and claimed. and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows a. cross sectional view through a plow beam and showing a disk associated therewith and including my novel mounting.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a field plow beam with which it is desired to associate a rotatable plow disk 11. In carrying out my invention I provide a casting 12 having a concaved base engaged against the convexed side of the disk 11 and secured to the disk by means of suitable bolts 13. At its central portion this casting 12 is formed with an extern-ally threaded extension 14 from which extends a reduced extension 15. The numeral 16 designates a shank or stem which passes through the casting 12 and which has a square head 17 fitting within a correspondingly'shaped opening in the center of the disk 11. 4The free end of this shank or stem 16 is reduced as shown and is externally threaded, this free end being designated by the numeral 18.
The support for the stem or shank 16 comprises a casting 19 recessed at one side as indicated at 2O for' conforming engagement with the plow beam 10. This casting 19 is 1921. Serial N0. 478,729.
disposed against one side of the beam against the other side of which is disposed a clamping plate 21 through which pass U- bolts 22 which entirely surround the casting 19 and which are provided with clamping nuts 23. At the end toward the disk the casting 19 is formed with an extension 24 which engages the reduced extension 15 of the casting 12. At its opposite end the casting 19 is formed with an externally threaded extension 25 for a purpose to be described. At its opposite side the casting 19 is formed with recesses 26 which communicate with a central bore 27 through which the stem or shank 1 6 of the disk extends. Located within the recesses 26 are Timken bearings designated by the numer-al 28 and disposed outwardly of the bearing members are thrust washers 29 against which are disposed roller bearings 30 which are in turn engaged by other thrust washers 31.
Threaded upon the end 18 of the shank or stem 16 is a nut 32 of the castellated type which is held in proper position by means of a cotter pin or the like 33 which passes through the nut and through the end 18 of the shank. Screwed upon the threaded extension 111 of the casting 12 is a dust cap 311 in which is disposed a felt washer 35 including a packing. Screwed upon the reduced extension 25 is a dust cap 36. Both of these dust caps are for the purpose of excluding dust and grit from the roller bearings, Timken bearings and thrust washers which constitute the bearing means for the shaft or stem of the disk.
rllhe casting 19 is preferably formed with a longitudinal duct which communicates with the bore 27 thereof and which has leading thereinto a passage 38 into which is secured a grease cup 39 whereby to provide for proper lubrication.
From the Jforegoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simple and yet highly eflicient mounting for a rotary disk of a plow whereby the disk will have the maximum amount of freedom of movement and the minimum frictional resistance, the device being inexpensive and very simple and consequently not likely to get out of order.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is of course to be readily understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, eonstrnetion and arrangement of the part-s as will not depart from the spirit of' the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described the invention what I claim is:
Means for mounting a plow disk upon a plow beam, comprising a stub shaft carried by the disk and extending from the Center thereof, said shaft being formed at a point spaced from the disk with a tapered portion tapering toward the free end of the shaft, the intermediate portion of the shaft being ot the same diameter as the smaller end ot said tapered portion, the shaft being` formed with a second tapered portion near the end thereof and'tapering toward the end, a member carriedl by the plow beam for receiving said Shaft, said member beingformed internally at its side toward the disk with a tapered bearingsurface opposite said first named tapered portion of the shaft, said member being formed at its opposite side with a tapered bearing surface arranged opposite and tapered in the direction opposite to said, second named tapered portion of the shaft, a bearing Cone engaged upon the seeond named tapered portion ot the shaft and having an. outer surface opposite the second named tapered portion of the member Carried by the plow beam and tapered oppositely to the second named tapered p0rtion of tbe shaft, means for retaining said bearing cone in position, a series of rollers engaged between the rst named tapered port-ion o t the shaft and tbe first named tapered portion oit said member carried by a plow beam, and a second series ot'rollers engaged between said cone and. the second named tapered portion of the member oarried by the plow beam.
