CLAUDIA KORP, OF ROBINSON, ILLINOIS.
AUXILIARY BED.
Application filed October 19 1921. Serial No. 508,757.
T 0 all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, CLAUDIA Konr, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident and slidably disposed beneathlan ordinary type of bed, free from the floor, while not A; further object of my invention 'is to provide an auxiliary bed that is always accessible to one using an ordinary type of bed, yet entirely out of the way when not in use.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described that is simple to operate, that is durable, and thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out-in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of an ordinary bed with the auxiliary bed in a retracted position,
Figure 2 is the same as Figure 1, but with the auxiliary bed extended,
Figure 3 is a view of the auxiliary bed in the final operative position,
Figure at is a top plan view of both beds, the auxiliary bed extended,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view "of one of the tracks and one of the rear hangers, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view of one of the tracks and one of the forward hangers.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of the ordinary type of bed 1 which may be of metal, wood, or of any ordinary construction such as is common to theart. I suspend from the horizontal mattress-bearing frame 2 a pair of metal tracks 3 having longitudinal slots 4 extending substantially of the bed 1.

the entire lengths thereof. The. metal ltracksS, as reference to igure 1 will show,
are bent upwardly adjacent one end thereof and hooked asshown g to the bed frame aforement1oned. At the; opposite end of the tracks 8 is an outwardly extending poi tion 5 comprising an endsurface-G and a top surface 7 bent back parallel to the track I 3. The slot 4 is arranged "to. extend. up through the surface 6 and the surface'i. Adjacent the end of the surface? is an upwardly extending flangeS havin a hook shaped portion 9 at the end thereof for fastening this end of the track to the fraine2 An. auxiliary bed frame 10 is provided with two substantially T-shaped hangers 11 at one side thereof. The hangers 11 are pivotally mounted on the frame 10, as
shown at 12, and are suspended at their opposite ends from the tracks 3,,th'e cylindrical portion 13 of the, hangers. passing ld resting upon the;upper surface of the "through the slots; {If and the -T-shaped head The frame 10 of the auxiliary, bed has pivotally mounted-at eachendthereof end pieces 15 and a side piece 16, The end pieces 15are arranged to hinge away from the frame and downwardly when not in use. The side piece 16 is-arranged to hinge. down upon the frame 10 when not in use, Two T-shaped hangers 17 are disposed on the frame 10 at right angles thereto, and are in a vertical position when the side 16 is' folded down upon the frame 10. These hangers 17 have substantially square head portions 18 which are arranged to enter and pass.
through recesses 19' in the slot 4 on the sur It will be seen therefore that the hangers 17 may be placed and removed from, suspension upon the track 3 1 at will. I I
Legs'20 are provided atthe' outer side of the auxiliary bed and are pivotally attached to the frame 10, as shown at 21. These legs 20 are arranged to fold up flat against the frame 10 ofv the auxiliary bed'whennot in use. This is shown in Figures 1 and 2.
From the for'egolng description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. I Normally the auxiliary bedywhen not in use, in the retracted position shown in Figure 1, the
cent the hangers 17 is gripped and the bed manually extended to the pos tion shown in Figure 2. This may be done since the hangers 11 are arranged to slide along the tracks The end pieces 15 and the side piece 16 are then elevated and secured together at their corners by a locking means, as shown at 22.
It will be noted at this time that the an); iliary bed lies in a plane lower than the plane of the mattress on the bed 1. The auxiliary bed must be elevated in some way to bring the two beds in the same plane. To this end the hangers ll make possible the swinging of the bed from a sus ended position to a supported position, shown in Figure 3, the heads 14 of the hangers ll merely acting as pivotal members upon the tracks 3.
The legs 20 are now unfolded fromthe frame 10 and are used to support the outer side of the auxiliary bed.
For the sake of more clearly revealing the construction of my invention, the mattress and bedding is not shown on the auxiliary bed. It will readily be seen, however, that the bedding need not be removed when the auxiliary bed is in a retracted position. A low side 23 of the auxiliary bed adjacent the larger bed aids in preventing the shifting of the bedding upon the frame 10. This side 23 is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2.
2. The combination with a self-supporting I bed having a horizontal frame, of a plurality of track memberssuspended from the under surface of said frame, an auxiliary bed frame, and means associated with said tracks permitting said auxiliary bed frame to be suspended beneath said first named bed orextended to the side and on a level with the frame of said first named bed at will, said means comprising a plurality of hangers pivotally mounted on said auxiliary bed frame at the inward side thereof, side and end walls pivotally mounted on said auxiliary bed frame, a plurality of vertical hangers rigidly mounted on said auxiliary bed frame, and a plurality of legs hingedly mounted on said auxiliary bed frame for supporting said last named frame when eX tended, said first hangers being slidably supported by said track members and said last named hangers having slidable support from said track members and being removable therefrom.
CLAUDIA KORE.
