To all whom it may concern: I
, Be it known that I, EMIL A. Kerr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex-and State of New Jersey, have invented certain :new and use ful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates toihinges, morepartic-ularly of the so-called flush-type and has for an object to provide a'hinge which is particularly adapted for, the folding or cover leaf of a drop-head sewing machine cabinet and which will permit said leaf to be opened thruan angle 01 substantially 270.
Another object-of the invention :is to provide a hinge which may be set substantially flush with the exposed surfaces of. the cabinet-top and cover and which will not offer any objectionable or unsightly protuberances in either closed or open position.
A further 'obfect of the invention is to provide a hinge which will permit thecover leaf to be opened or swung through an angle of 270 from a horizontal position upon the cabinettop to a pendant vertical position at one end of the cabinet-top, and at the same time dropped sot-hat itsupper edge will not project above the level of the upper surface of the cabinet-top. 7
Still further, the invention has for an object to provide a hinge which will elfect the elevation of the hinge-end of the cover-leaf as said leaf is being closed, thereby preventing damage due to rubbing or other harsh contacts between the cover-leaf and cabinettop.
WVith the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter. appear, the present hinge comprises a pair of hinge-leaves each of which is preferably formed of bent sheetmetal and comprises a pair of spaced vertical walls and horizontal attaching ears. The spaced walls of the hinge leaves embrace the opposite ends of a distance link which permits the cover of the cabinet to drop as it is being opened out so that its upper edge will not project above the level of the exposed surface of the cabinet-top. The stationary leaf member of the hinge, i. e.. the one which is secured to the cabinettop. is provided at the upper edges of the spaced vertical walls with very slight upward extensions-affording abutment surfaces against which the movable leaf-10f the reacts as a lever to lift the outer end of th'e distance link as the cover of the :oabinet is being clos'ed, thereby ',-p-i '-eventin;g-

In the preferred embodiment of the'invention, as illust'nitechthe hinge coinprises'astationary leaf 1 and a movable leaf Qwhich "are pivotally connected together by means of the distance link 3. The movable leaf 20f the hinge is also formed of sheet-metal which is folded at 12 to form the spaced walls 13, 13, extensions of whichare further bent to form the attaching;

The upper edge 20 ofthe link 18 is'shaped' so as to be flush with the'surfaces 8 and 10 of the stationary leaf l when said link lies horizontally, in which position the outer extremity ofthe link projects horizontally beyond the end of the board a and extends between the end ears 16 of the walls 13 of the movable leaf 2, being pivotally connected to the latter at 21.- 'The lower-edge 20 of the distance link, is curved to match the ogee curves of both the table-top and coverboards,as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 6.
lVhen the cover '6 is opened to .the posi tion shownin Fig.1, the extreme upper edge of said cover is substantially at the level of the upper surface of the top-board at. As the cover-is being closed the corners 22 at the outer ends of-the folds -between the ears 14c and walls 13 strike the abutment surfaces I 10 of the stationary leaf .1, as shown in Fig.
2, and act as the fulcrum of a lever formed by the hinge-leaf 2 to lift or swing the distancelink '8 upwardly about its pivot'17, thereby elevating the pivot 21 and cover I) to the position shown in Fig. 3.- The metallic contact between the corner 22 and the upper edges of the walls 5 prevents rubbing --of the-edge of the cover 6 against the upper surface of the cabinet-top a.
- It will be noted'that in the position shown in FigB the movable leaf 2 is disposed mainly betweent'he stationary leaf'l and the pivotal connection 21; In other words, the pivotal connection 21" is disposed nearer theupper than the-lower limit of the movable leaf. Further, the slot in the movable leaf isopen for a space of more than 180 around the pivotal; connection 21. These provisions permit the movable leaf to be swung throughan angle of substantially 270 from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 1.;
The invention is not to be understood as limited to the exact form and arrangement of partsshown and described, as the present construction is obviously susceptible of material modifications within the scope of movable leaves, and a link-bar connection between said leaves, one of saidleaves being constructed and adapted to react as a lever against the other leaf to lift the link-bar and effect theelevation of themovable leaf as the latter is being swung from open to closed position: 1 y
