Witnesie s. in van for UNITED STATES PATENT DFFteE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR SLlClNG DRIED BEEF.
Specification l'orming'pert of Letters P t nt No, 144,206, dated November 4, 1572; application filed September 8, 137
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTHONY lslui, ol' the city of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have made certain Improvements in a Machine for Slicing Dried heel, of which the following is a specification:
The ohject of this invention is to obviate the ohicctions to knives set in frames and used horizontally, or knives otherwise made, aml used in cutting dried beet. 'lhe objections are overcome h v securing the knife in an ohlique position in a verticallv-sliding frame. so that the edge of the knife comes shear-fashion in close contact with the edge of the stationary holder, hoth horizontally and vertically, and which. contact remains the same, whether regulated to cut thick or thin slices, by making the adjustment independently from thatof moving the knife. The resistance and downward pressure of the cutting-edge in its sliding motion secures a clean cat, which has proved to render entire satist'zu-tiou,
The accompanving drawings show the construction and combination of the parts, in whieh-' Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine. Fig. .3 shows thereverse side of the lnlit'eframc; lrig. It, the regnlating-piece, to adjust the thickness of the slices to' he cut, dctached.
'lhe hase. 13, with its ledge l to hold against the edge of a tahle. is provided with two vertical posts, A, joined ahove h v a cross-pitafc, to leave an open frame. llehind this crosspiece there is a grooved guide, A. above, and a similar one hclow, in which the frame I) l) of the knife slides, h v its tongue (I. in a vertical position. There is an additional liedpiece, ll, provided with a vertical end, c, the. edges of which may he lined with metal, and come in close proximity to the knii'e or its cutting-edge. 'lhe knil'e l) is slightly concave on its side, (the edge is straight,) and tir|nl attached to the frame l) and portion l: of the hack, which, with the kuit'e, remain in a lixed position in relation to the. inner edge of the ed ll on which the beef to he sliced is put and held hv one hand, while the knit'c is propelled l v the handle it on the sliding frame, causing a downward pressure against the resistance of the base and back B U.
Knives fixed in horizontal frames, over which the dried beef is pushed by hand or otherwise. are inclined to press the olgject ontward or choke up; and when the knife itself is set in or out, its action is impaired: hence I form a distinct piece, (n Fig. 3, which has sntticient play to allow of the desired degree of adjustment Irv means of a plate, I), atv one end, or at the apex, and the other end is provided with ashouldered ott'set. Headed screwdiolts secure this adjusting-piece (l at both ends, aml the adjustment is made l v means of wedges J, which have a slot to pass in close contact on each side of the holts. which wedges, with the adjustment made, are held, h v the thumh-screws K, in place.
A fair trial of a working machine-of full size has given such universal satisfaction as to he deemed ot' the greatest utility for slicing dried heel".
I am aware that knives set oliliquetv'iu frames for slicing caldmgc, are not new; but I am not aware that any have heen so used vertically to operate SltPtlF-iltsltlfill, and made adjustahle independently of changing the relative proximitvot' the edge of the knife and edge of the supporting-tatile for the material. 'lluu-etore,
\Yhat l claim as my invention. and desire to secure h v Letters Patent, is
.l. The ohlinuc knife .1), arranged in a verticall v-slidiug frame, I), and made adjustahle Irv means of a movahle piece, (l, in combination with the grooved guides A A. frame A, holding-lied it t, and base 1 with its ledge l, the whole suhstantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
2. in combination with a knife, l1. and frame I), the :nlinsting-picce (l, with its attached plate L, screw-holts and tlunnliscrmvs K, and slotted wedges l d, suhstz'lntially arranged in the manner and for the purpose shown and set forth,
