To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALBERT BnoAoMnrnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- Feeding Apparatus, of which the following is a specification;
The present invention feeding apparatus of the general type shown in my prior Patent No. 1,207 ,364:, dated Dec. 5 1916..
In machines of this character it is the usual custom to have a vertically movable table supporting the pile of paper to be fed, the sheets being removed successively from the top of the pile and the table with the pile being elevated intermittently as the J sheets are removed. The governing mecha nism ordinarily includes a controlling device that rests uponthe pile of sheets, and as the pile decreases by the removal, this controlling device drops, thereby releasing a latch that permits the operation of the table-elevating mechanism. "A very delicate relation of the parts is essential, and it sometimes happens that inasmuch as the elevating mechanism always moves a predetermined distance before its tops, the table will be elevated slightly farther than desirable to secure the best feeding results. As a consequence there will be a, binding action between the diflerent parts that will not secure the best results. Furthermore it is highly desirable that a relatively few sheets be removed between each v elevation, and therefore if the table is elevated excessively a larger number must be removed be fore the succeeding elevation takes place. These various objections are entirely overcome or materially reduced in the present structure. y

In the embodiment disclosed, a suitable frame 9 is provided, having vertical screws 10,supporting .a work-carrying table 11, on which the pile of sheets is placed. The elevation of the table 11 is accomplished in the usual manner through the medium of a cross shaft 12 geared, as shown at 13, to the screws 10. This cross shaft carries a ratchet wheel 141 adapted to be operated on by a pawl 15 mounted on a swinging carrier 16. A drive crank 17 is engaged with a link 18.having a longitudinal slot 19, and in this slot is located a pin 20 mounted on the carrier 16. When the carrier 16 is free, its'weight will cause it to move in a direction to carry the pawl lo-downwardly over the teeth of the ratchet wheel 141, and the pin 20 will be engaged in the outerend of the slot 19. As the crank disk 17 rotates, the carrier 16 Wlll be swung upwardly, and the pawl 15 will engage one of the teeth of the ratchet wheel 14 and the shaft will thus be turned step-by step to elevate the table. So faras thus disclosed, the structure is well known.
Mounted on the frame is a rock shaft 21 having a longitudinal keyway 22, and surrounding this'rock shaft is a split collar 23 provided with spaced ears 24 connected by a tightening screw 25. A key 26 is located within the collar and engaged in the keyway 22, said hey being provided with offset ends 27 that embrace the collar and ensure the movement of the key therewith. The collar has aflixed "thereto a forwardly extending controlling arm 28 provided with a supporting blade 29 adapted to rest upon the pile of sheets placed on the table 11. An actuatingarm 30 is fixed to the rock shaft'21 and extends forwardly at one side of the frame, being provided at its-free end with-a pivot pin 31. This pivot pin is engaged in a vertically elongated opening 32 formed in a latch 33 that is pivoted to the frame, as shown at 34:. The latch is adapted and'theldownward movement of said latch and of the actuating arm 30 is likewise limited by an' adjustable stop screw 39 located in the path of the arm 30.
In order to substantially counterbalance the weight of the arms 28 and 30, said arm 30 at its mounting on the'shaft 21 is provided with a depending ear-40,in which is fixed a rearwardly extending stem 41, and
to this stem is connected a counterbalancing' spring 42 that may be adjustably connected 7 to a suitable portion of the frame, as indicated at 43 in orderthat the tension of the stopped wh1le the slot 19 permits the continued rotation of the crank disk 17 and rod 18. As the sheets of paper are removed from beneath the blade 29, the controlling arm 28 i Will gradually drop, thereby permitting the depression of the arm 30 and of the latch 33 .until the'latter is disengaged from the dog 35, whereupon thecarrier 16 will drop by gravity and the rod 18 will again elevate it,
- causing an elevation of the table as already described until the latch 33 is again engaged 1 with the dog 35. and the elevating operation discontinued. In this operation the loose play permltted between the latch 33 and the actuating arm 30 is exceedingly important,
for the yielding connection eliminates the binding action between the parts that is apt to take place where these parts are closely connected, as heretofore, and this relief from pressure is also assisted by the counter-balancing sprin 43- As a consequence it has 7 been found t at the controlling mechanism is much more responsive to the change occasioned by the removal ofthe sheets from 'the pile, and as the mechanism is ordinarily utilized in connection with pneumatic feed ing means, it effects a better feeding action since less suction is required to take the sheets and consequently greater blast obtained in loosening the sheets on the pile. 1
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes "in the size,
struction'may be resorted to without departshape, proportion and minor details of coning -from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Havin thus fully described my invention,
what I c aim as new,-and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1, In feeding apparatus, the combination with an adjustable support, of means for adjusting the same and control mechanism for the adjusting means, comprising a holding latch, a rock shaft, an actuating arm for the latch connected to the rock shaft, a controlling arm connected to the rock shaft, and means'swinging with the rock shaft as a center, for counterbalancing the arms.
2. In feeding apparatus, the combination with an adjustable support, of means for adjusting the same and control mechanism for the adjusting means, comprising a holding latch, a rock shaft, an actuating arm for the \latch connected to the rock shaft, a stem swinging with the rock shaft as a center, a controlling arm connected 'to the rock shaft, and a spring connected to said stem for turning the shaft and acting in opposition to the actuating arm and controlling arm.
3. Infeeding apparatus, the combination with an adjustable support, of means for adjusting the same and control mechanism for the adjusting means, comprising a holding latch, an actuating arm for the latch capable of limited play with respect to the latch, means for yieldingly resisting such limited play, and means controlled by the elevation of the work pile for moving the arm.
4. In feeding apparatus, the combination with an adjustable support, of means for adjusting the same and control mechanism for the adjusting means, comprising a holdin latch, an actuating arm for the latch, a yiel ing connection between the arm and latch, and means controlled by the elevation of the work pile for moving the'arm.

In feeding apparatus, the combination with an adjustable support, of means for adjusting the same, and control mechanism for the adjusting means, comprising a holding latch, an actuating arm for the latch, a pivot connection between the arm and latch having a loose play, and a spring operating on the pivot connection to 'yieldingly take up such loose Iplay.
6. n feeding apparatus, the combination with an adjustable support, of means for adjusting the same and control mechanism for the adjusting means, comprising a holding latch, a rock shaft, a con-trolling arm adjustably mounted on the rock shaft, an actuating arm mounted on the rock shaft, said latch having a'slot, a pivot on the actuating arm engaged in the slot, a spring mounted on the latch and bearing on the arm, and a counterbalancing spring operating on the rock shaft in opposition to the controlling and actuating arms. 1
7. In feeding apparatus, the combination with an adjustable support and means for adjusting the same, of control mechanism for the adjusting means, including a holdin latch, an actuating arm for the latch, and a connection between the actuating arm and latch that insures the positive movement of naeore the latch by the arm in one direction and permits the arm to have a limited return movement independent of the latch.
8. In feeding apparatus, thecomloination with an adjustable support and means for adjusting the same, of control mechanism for the adjusting means, including a swinging pawl carrier, a holding latch movable into and out of position to hold the pawl carrier, an actuating arm for the latch, and a connection between the actuating arm and latch that permits the arm to have a limited movement with respect to the latch when said arm and latch move in a direction to hold the pawl carrier, said connection causing the arm to positively move the latch on their return'movement.
