Application filed necenitei- 1a, 1921. semi no. see rm.
To all who m t t may concern:
Be it known that l, EARL W. TURNER, a citizen ol the Unitedtltates, residing at Kolromo, in the county of Howard and. L tate .o'lf llndiana, have iiwented certain new and useful lmplovements in Foot rlrccclerators, oil which the following a specification.
This invention relates to loot accelerators for motor vehicles and. the embodiment shown prin'iarily designed. for use on Ford. automobiles.
The object of the invention is to provide an accelerator which maybe readily applied to the new style urn s in present use on the latest models ot the Ford var carburetor which arms are now inthe :torm oil a thin metal stamping.
Another object otthe invention is to pro vide an accelerator ot the characterspecified which may be readily installed by the operator of the car without the need of t is serv- VVith these andother objects in view, the invention consists in certainnovel features of construction as hereinafter shown, de scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a fragmentary top plan view of an automobile showing this improved accelerator applied.
Fig. 2 is an'enlargedplan view of a Ford car carburetor showing this improved accelorator applied and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the carburetor with the accelerator applied.
In the embodiment illustrated, an automobile A. is shown having the usual engine E equipped with the ordinary carburetor the upright throttle valve stein S of which is equipped with the usual throttle lever L 1novable in a horizontal plane. and having in. the tree end of its longer arm an eye which usuallyl re eives the downturned end. r of the hand actuated valve operating rod lt whose control member positioned contiguous to the steering wheel il The lever lid which is in the torni of a bell crank or l..--shaped lever has its shorter arm equipped with the usual set screw 3 adapted to abut a stop a on the carbureter C to limit the movement o'li said lever.
All of the parts so briefly described are of common construction the end 7" of the rod R being usually received in the eye of the free end of the long arm. of lever whereby endwise shitting of said rod by the open ator will adjust the throttle valve to properly turn its stein S. l Vhen using: the accelerator constituting this invention the end T of" the rod l1 is retrieved from the eye Oili lover I. and isreceived in. an arouate slot 9 in a quadrant plate 1 constituting a part of. the invention as will be hereinafter more fully described, without necessitating any change being made in red it. i
The accelerator constituting this invention comprises the quadrant l in the form of a one-piece stain iiing shown clearly in Fig. 2 which has an arcuate slot 2 :liormed therein to receive the downturned on d 1" of the rod It. This quadrant 1 has an arm 3 extending obliquely downward and inwardly from its outer corner in a plane below the quadrant being; connected therewith by a depending right angularertension 3 the arm and ere tension-being preferably made integral with plate 1. The arm 3 is designed to overlie the long arm of the lever L and is provided. at its free end with two laterally extending bendable fingers l which are bent down under the lever as shownclearly in Figs. 2 and 3. The outer end of arm 3 has an aperture for the reception of a bolt 5 which passes therethrough and. through the outer terminal of the butterfly valve arm or throttle lever T1. The rearor inner end of the quad ant 1 is provided with an inwardly and laterally extending apertured gear 6 to receive a downturned end 'i" 01. the foot accelerator rod 8. This rod 8 extends rearwardly through the floor F of the car and is equipped with an enlarged head 9 which constitutes a foot ngaging member wherebythe quadrant is actuated to control lever L for opening the butterfly valve or throttle.
it coiled spring 10 is mounted on rod 8 between the head 9 and the floor of: the car and exerts its tension to normally retain the stop screw ,5- in contact with the stop screw 8 to hold the lever T1 in the position in which the throttle valve is partially closed as it normally stands.
Tn the use oi this accelerator the forward. movement of rod 8 by engagement of the operators foot with the head 9 thereof will swing the quadrant l outwardly turning the lever Ti so as to open the throttle valve the desired amount.
From the above description it will. be obvious that the mounting of the downturned end 1* of the throttle rod lit in the arcuate slot 2 oi the quadrant 1 permits said quadrant to be actuated by the foot rod 8 without'in any way affecting the hand controlled rod which will remain stationary during the operation of the accelerator.
It is of course understood that the throttle or butterfly valve may be opened to the desired extent by pressure on the head 9 of rod 8 and that when said rod is released the spring 10 will retract it and the quadrant 1 close the butterfly valve.
If the operator desires to use the hand operated throttle mechanism he may do so in the usual manner.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
I claim:
1. A foot accelerator for automobiles, comprising a quadrant shaped plate having an arcuate slot therein to receive the hand controlled throttle rod of a carburetor, an extension depending fromone end of said plate, an arm extending at an angle with respect to the plate and connected at its outer end tosaid extension and further having its inner end provided with a plurality of fingers for overlapping the throttle lever of the, carbureter, means for securing the outer end of said arm to the throttle lever of the carbureter, and said arm provided with means for the reception of the li'oot actuated operating rod of 4 bureter.
2. A foot accelerator for automobiles comprising an arm adapted to be adapted to be seated upon and having means for overlapping the elongated legs bf the throttle lever of a carbureter means for securing the outer end of said arm to the said leg, a vertical extension at the outer end of V said arm, and a plate projecting from said the carextension. and provided with an arcuate slot for the reception of the hand controlled throttle rod of a carburetcr and further. having means at one side of the slot for the reception of a foot actuated operating rod of the carburetor.
A foot accelerator for automobiles comprising an arm adapted to be positioned on the upper face of the elongated leg of the throttle lever of a carburetor and further provided at its inner end with fingers adapted to overlap said. leg whereby the inner end of the arm is secured to the leg, means for securing the outer end 01' the arm to said leg, a vertical extension carried by the outer end of the arm, and a plate disposed at right angles with respect to said extension and provided with an arcnatc slot for the reception oil. the hand controlled throttle rod of a carburetor and further having one end provided with means arranged at one side of said slot for the rcception of a foot actuated throttle rod of the carburetor.
at. A foot accelerator for automobiles comprising an arm adapted to be positioned on one of the legs of a throttle lover of a carburetor and having its inner end provided with bendable fingers l'or overlapping said leg whereby the inner end of the arm is connected to the leg, means for securing the outer end oi. the arm to said leg, an extension projecting upwardly from said arm, and a quadrant shaped plate projecting at an angle with respect to said extension, and provided with an arcuate slot for the reception ot the hand controlled throttle rod of the carburetor and further prorided at one end and to one side of said slot with means for the reception. of the foot actuated throttle controlling rod of the carbureter.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my sig} nature hereto.
