Beit known that I, CALDER G. GInsoN, a citizenof the United States, residing at Bufialo, in the county of Erie and Eitate of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutting and Stamping Machines, of Whichthe -following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to a cutting and stamping machine by which the stub or portion of a gas bill, invoice or other paper is severed or cut from the remaining'portion and at the same time a date or other matter printed on both the main and' stub portions of the bill or other paper. r

One of the objects of the invention is to provide the machine with simple means for reversing the type-holding device to a corn venient and accessible position, in order to facilitate changing the type, when required. Another object is to provide the machine with an improved inking pad which can be manipulated without soiling the hands.

Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts In the embodiment ofthe invention illustrated in the drawings, the printing and cutting mechanisms are mounted on a 00111- paratively small box-like cabinet 15 having a removable drawer 16 for receiving the severed portions of the bills or other papers. The top 17 of this cabinet forms a bed or table for the bills to be printed and is provided with a longitudinal slot18 for receiving the cutter mechanism and an opening 1%) for the passage of the severed stubs into the drawer below.
The cutter mechanism may be of any suitable construction, being preferably composed of a stationary cutter-blade 20 suitably secured to one of the walls of the slot 18 and a vertically-movable knife or cutter blade 21 pivoted at 22 to a base block 2-3 mounted on the rear portion of the cab inet 15. a l. spring 24 attached at one end to the movable cutter and at its other end to the rear wall of the cabinet serves to normally maintain the cutter in its elevated or inoperative position, as shown by full lines in Figs. 1, 3 and 8.
'ilheiprinting mechanism.- is disposed above the top of the cabinet and ispreferably constructed as follows:
Tlhe frame for supporting the printing mechanism comprises a pair of side plates or standards 25, 25, which are suitably secured tothe base block 23 and between which is mounted a removable ink pad 26 of any appropriate form. Pivoted or fulcrumed at the upper front ends of the these plates is a verticallyswinging til-shaped operating member or lever 27 carrying between its arms a pendant type-holding device which includes a frame or carrier 28 .and a typesupporting block 30. The end cars 28* of this carrier are connected centrally to the arms of the operating lever 27 by pivot pins 29 arranged transversely or" the machine. The type-supporting block 30 is arranged on the bottom of the carrier 28 and is provided in its underside with a recess 31, the bottom of which is metal-lined and adaptedto contact with the upper edge of the movable cutter blade 21 to depress it when the operating lever is swung forwardly and downwardly to printing position,shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. ln order to facilitate the removal of the type block from its carrier, 28, it may be provided on its upper side with a pair of spring clips 32, 32, whose hooked ends embrace the front and rear edges of said carrier, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7.
Secured to the lower side of the supporting block 30 are two type holders 33, 33, preferably of rectangular form in which are removably arranged the printing type or stamps 34 for imprinting the date or other desired matter on the bills or other papers. The type may be formed of rubber, and frictionally held in the bed 35 carried by each holder, as shown in Figs. 10 and 11.
In order to maintain the carrier 28 and its block 30 in a substantially level position when swung to printing or inking posit-ion, parallel links 36, 37 are provided which connect said carrier with the fixed Side plates 25, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. One of these links, say the link 36 at the right hand side of the machine, is preferably permanently pivoted at one end to the corresponding plate 25 and at its other end to the adjacent ear 28 of the carrier, as shown at 38 and 39, respectively. This right-hand link is disposed belowv and parallel with the arms of the operating lever 27 and the pivots of said links are substantially in vertical alinement with the respective pivots of the operating lever and the carrier, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, said link being thus pivoted centrally t0 the adjacent ear 28. One end of the link 37 on the left-hand side of the machine may be permanently pivoted at 4:0 to the corresponding plate while its other end is detachably connected to a spring-pressed pivot and coupling pin 41 guided for horizontal movement in bearings 42 and 43 in the adjacent upper rear side of the carrier 28, as shown in Fig. 5. A spring 44 arranged in the bearing 43 normally tends to move the pivot pin outward into engagement with an opening 46 in the link 37, this pin having a knurled collar 5 for withdrawing it from said opening. This collar is arranged between its bearings and also performs the function of limiting the movement of the pivot pin in either direction. Said link 37 is also disposed below and parallel with the arms of the operating lever, the pivot 40 of said link being preferably behind the plane of the corresponding pivot of the link 36, while the pivot pin 41 thereof is behind the plane of the corresponding pivot 39 of said link 36.
By this arrangement when both links 36 and 37 are in their operative position, the carrier 28 together with its type block is always maintained in a substantially level position as the operating lever 27 is swung to printing and inking positions, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, respectively.
\Vhen it is desired to move the carrier and its type supporting block to the reversed position shown by full lines in Fig. 8, the link 37, which functions to normally keep said elements in an upright position, is disconnected from the carrier by withdrawing the pivot pin 41 from said link, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 5. and allowing it to drop to the position shown in said figure. The operating lever is then moved upwardly and. rearwardly from its normal position shown by full lines in Figs. 1. and 3 to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 8, the block and carrier being at the same time swung backward by hand on the operating lever. In this position of the parts the pivot 39 of the perinanently-connected link 36 is located behind. the dead center line drawn through the other pivot 33 of said link and the corresponding pivot pin 29. Upon now swinging the operating lever forwardly and downwardly. the carrier together with its block is turned rearwardly and upwardly and thence forwardly about the upper pivot 39 of the link 36 as a fulcrum, completely reversing the carrier and its block to the position shown by full lines in Fig. 8. by the time that the handle of operating lever comes in contact with the top of the cabinet. In this inverted. position of the block the type 3 an be conveniently and quickly changed. The type block is inverted to this accessible position by simply swinging the operating lever first backward and then forward, thus doing away with the necessity of removing the type block from the carrier 28 and again replacing it to change the type, saving considerable time and increasing the convenience of the machine.
To reset the parts for normal operation. the operating lever is swung upwardly and rearwardly, to return the carrier and its block to the upright position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 8. whereupon the link 37 is again coupled to the carrier by the pivot pin 41, thus restoring the machine to its normal condition for stamping and clipping bills, etc.
The ink pad 26 is preferably secured in a sheet metal holder having a bottom 147 and upright longitudinal handle-flanges 48 which extend a suitable distance above the inking surface of the pad, as shown in Fig. 3. The holder rests upon corner seats 49, preferably cast on the standards 25, and is confined between lugs or flanges 50 projectingupwardly from the outer edges of said seats. The flanges 48 form convenient means for grasping the holder in putting it in place and removing it; said flanges by projecting above the surface of the pad, preventing the hands from touching it and becoming soiled.
I claim as my invention:
1. A machine of the character described, comprising a frame, an operating member mounted on said frame, a type-holding device carried by said operating member and capable of reversal thereon. and means for connecting said typeholding device with said frame to normally maintain it in a substantially level operative position during the ta l-me"? able means for connecting said type holding device with said frame to normally maintain said device in a substantially level operative position, and additional connecting means between said typeholding device and said frame to cause the reversal of said device by the action of said operating member when said first-named connecting meansare detached.
3. A. machine of the character described, comprising a frame, an operating lever fulcrumed on said frame, a reversible typeholdingdevice carried by said lever, and means for connecting said type-holding device withsaid frame to normally maintain it in a substantially level position during the movements of said. lever, apart of said con necting means being detachable from said type-holding device to permit the latter to move to reverse position upon the downward movement of said operating lever.

comprising a frame, an operating lever ful-- crumed on said frame, a reversible typeholding device pivotally mounted on said lever, and links pivotally connecting said type-holding device with said frame to normally maintain it in a substantially level position during the movements of said lever, one of said. .links being detachable from said type-holding device, and the other being pivoted to swing rearwardly beyond the dead center when said lever is swung in that direction, the upper pivot of the last-named linkacting as a fulcrum on which said carrier turns to its reversed position when said lever is swung forwardly.
5. A. machine of the character described, comprising a frame, an operating lever pivoted to said frame, a type-holding device pivotally suspended from said lever, and a pair of parallel links pivotally connected at their ends to said type-holdingdevice and said frame, respectively, the pivots of one of said links being in substantially vertical alinement with the pivots of said type-holding device and said lever, while the pivots of the other link are out of vertical alinement with the pivots of said type-holding device and said lever.
6. A. machine of the character described, comprising a frame, an operating lever pivoted to said frame, a type-holding device pivotally suspended from said lever, and a pair of parallel links pivotally connected at.

A machine of the character described, comprising a frame, a vertically-swinging operating lever pivoted to said frame, a type-holding device pivotally suspended from said lever, a pair of parallel links pivotally connected at their ends to said typeholding device and said frame, respectively, the pivots of one of said. links being in substantially vertical alinement with the pivots of said type-holding device and said lever, while the pivots of the other link are out of vertical alinement with the pivots of said type-holding device and said lever, and a spring-pressed pivot pin mounted on said type-holding device for detachably connect ing said last-named link thereto.
8. A machine of the character described, comprising a frame, an operating lever fulrrumed on said frame, a reversible typeholding device pivotally mounted on said lever, detachable means for normally retaining said type-holding device in its stamping position during the movements of said lever, and a link pivoted at one endto said frame and having its other end pivoted to the central portion of said type-holding device to cause reversal of the latter by the forward movement of said lever when said retaining means are detached.
