CLOSURE.
Application filed January 19, 1921. Serial No. 438,383.
a cover or door of the kind above referred to which is provided with a locking mechanism that will effectively prevent unauth0r ized access through the same.
The object is especially to provide an ettective locking means which cannot be readily broken as would be the case it the locking mechanism were situated on the outside of the enclosure and were secured to the same by a flexible attaching means.
A further object is to provide a locking mechanism for such covers or doors which is so arranged that the lock cannot be opened without the necessity of breaking a seal which in this instance is a revenue stamp that is situated over the keyhole oi the lock ing mechanism located on the inside of the cover or door.
Still another object is to provide a looking mechanism of this character which is located on a cover screw-threaded in the dome oi? the tank car.
Furtherobjects will appear from the detailed description of the invention hereinafter contained. I
There are many ways of carrying out my invention but I have shown one form of the same in the accompanying drawings, in which i Figure 1 is a vertical section of a dome plate carrying a cover made in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. t
Figure 3. is a plan view oil-the lock carried by the cover.
Figure 4c is a plan view showing the interi or mechanism of the same.
Figure 5 is a section taken on line ol Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a section taken on line 6-6 of Figure 5.

l isure '4' is a plan view ot the stamp can I device.
Figure 8 a plan view ot the opened position.
Figure 9 is :1 plan view or the hey-hole plate fitting on the inside of the cover.
l-igure 10 is a planview ot' the key which is used for operating the look.
In the drawings 1'. have shown a dome plate 1 ha ing a plurality of holes 2 around its edge to permit the same to be riveted to the dome of the tankcar. Thedonie plate 1 has an opening 3 surrounded by a downwardly directed screw-threaded flange t to receive a screw-tlu-eaded flange- 5 fitting: therein carried by a cover 6. The cover 6 has a lifting handle 7 atits center and a rotating handle 8 near its edge, as well as a plurality of ears having holes 10 therein to aid in the moving of the cover. Around the periphery of the cover there may be a gasket 11 of leather or other similar material which its agniust an annular projection 12 on the dome plate 1 to make an airtight joint. Furthermore, the cover 6 has a nuni-r ber of laterally directed holes 13 to act as vents in opening the tank car.
Attached to the inside of the cover 6 there is a lock casing 14 which is held in place by screws 15. The lock casing 1%} has a later-; ally movable bolt 16 adapted to pass through an opening 17 in the flange 5 into a recess 18 in toe dome plate 1. This lock may be of any desired construction but by way of example it may have the following operating parts, in addition to the boltreterred to above, The bolt 16 carried by a sliding plate 19 iittin against the bottom of the loelc casing ld. which has a guidingslot 20 cooperating with a projection 21 on the lock casing. Said plate 19. "furthermore. is provided with a recess 22 to cooperate with a member 23 on a he 2% which is adapted to be inserted over a stem 25 on the lock casing that into the barrel of the key, llpon the sliding plate 19 there is a proje ction 26 that projects into an opening 2 10- cated in three tumblers staid tumblers being pivoted upon a pin 29 carried by the lock easing. These tumblers, furthermore. have springs 30 whichrest against a stop on the lock casino; The stop 3]. provided with a screw-threaded recess and there are two similarly recessed members and 'lfhese three recessed same in members support adiaphragm plate 3 1- which is held in place by screws 35. The plate 34 has holes 36 for the passage of the screws 15, a hole 37 for the pm 29 and a key-hole 38 to receive the key 2 1. Furthermore said plate has at one end therof a slot 39 into which projects a flange d on a sliding plate 41, in such a manner that the flange 4E0 normally rests upon the rear end of the bolt 16.
The plate 4-1 is guided by means out a strap 42 screwed to the diaphragm plate 3 1 and is normally pressed forwardly by means of spring 43 surrounding a rod 44 on'the rear of the plate 4.1. which rod passes through a' hole in the lock casing 14. Upon the top of the sliding plate 41 there is an inverted L- shaped catch 46 which is arranged to cooperate with an I apertured tongue 17 arranged to project downwardly through the cover 6 -The said key-hole plate is hinged to a staand carried by a hinged key-hole plate 4.8.
tionary key-hole plate t9 secured to the top of thecover by means 01 screws 50 passing I through the same, through the cover and into an inner key-hole plate 51.
' a revenue stamp 56 is designed to be placed and locked in position by four corresponding pins 57 carried by the hinged key hole' plate 48 around key-hole 58. Again, upon the top ofthe hinged key-hole plate a8, there is a rotary cover 59 supported by a pivot 60 on which there is located a coiled spring 61 resting in a recess 62 in the rotary cover 59, so that thecover 59 will normally occupy aposition over the key-hole 58. 1
In the operation or my invention, after thetank car has been filled with the liquid to be shipped, the cover 6 is placed over the same either with the aid of the ears 9 or the handle 7 or both, and is then screwed into place by use of thehandle 8 until the gasket 11 fits against the top of the flange 12 and the bol 16 is opposite the recess 18 in the dome plate 1. Thereupon the key 2451s lIISGItBCl and the bolt 16 1S moved into the recess 18 thus locking the cover in place;
The key is then withdrawn and a revenue stamp is placed over the keyhole 55, after which the hinged key-hole plate d8 is moved into its lower position, thus causing the apertured tongue 47 to engage with the l-- shaped projection 46 which springs into the aperturein thetongue 47 due to the pressure of the spring 413. This at the same time holds the stamp 56 in place overthe keyhole and perforates it with the aid of the teeth 57. In order to gain access to the tank car now it is necessary to first swing the its location on the interior of the tank car cover 59 to one side and then insert'the key intothe look through the keyhole 58, the revenue stamp 56 and the key- holes 55, 53 and 38. ll henever the tank car is opened in this way or an unauthorized attempt is made to gain access thereto by inserting opening devices into the lock, the opening or attempted opening of the tank car can v be readily seen by the fracture of the revenue stamp 56. Furthermore, it would be extremely difficult to gain access to the tank car without the proper key as it would be a diflicult matter to in any way move or damage the locking mechanism because of c ver. The presence of the screw-threaded flanges a and 5 which engage with one another, strengthens the locking mechanism in a very etlfective'manner also. Once, however, that the bolt 16 has been withdrawn by the operation of the lock with the key 24;, the cover 6 may be readily unscrewed so as to' give access to the tank car, and by the withdrawal or the bolt 16 the tongue i7 will be released from the projection 4L6, thus permitting the hinged key-hole plate 48 to be moved outwardly so that the old stamp can be removed. The parts are now in position for closing the tank car again in the manner above described.
Above I have describedmy invention in detail, but it is to be understood that many changes will be made therein within the scope of my invention.
I claim: I p
